On the Dynkin index of a principal $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-subalgebra

Let $g$ be a simple Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. The goal of this note is to prove a closed formula for the Dynkin index of a principal $sl_2$-subalgebra of $g$. The key step in the proof uses the "strange formula" of Freudenthal--de Vries. As an application, we (1) compute the Dynkin index any simple $g$-module regarded as $sl_2$-module and (2) obtain an identity connecting the exponents of $g$ and the dual Coxeter numbers of both $g$ and the Langlands dual $g^\vee$.

Actions of the derived group of a maximal unipotent subgroup on $G$-varieties

Let $U$ be a maximal unipotent subgroup of a connected semisimple group $G$ and $U'$ the derived group of $U$. We study actions of $U'$ on affine $G$-varieties. First, we consider the algebra of $U'$ invariants on $G/U$. We prove that $k[G/U]^{U'}$ is a polynomial algebra of Krull dimension $2r$, where $r=rk(G)$. A related result is that, for any simple finite-dimensional $G$-module $V$, $V^{U'}$ is a cyclic $U/U'$-module. Second, we study "symmetries" of Poincare series for $U'$-invariants on affine conical $G$-varieties. Third, we obtain a classification of simple $G$-modules $V$ with polynomial algebras of $U'$-invariants (for $G$ simple).

Properties of weight posets for weight multiplicity free representations

We study weight posets of weight multiplicity free (=wmf) representations $R$ of reductive Lie algebras. Specifically, we are interested in relations between $\dim R$ and the number of edges in the Hasse diagram of the corresponding weight poset, $# E(R)$. We compute the number of edges and upper covering polynomials for the weight posets of all wmf-representations. We also point out non-trivial isomorphisms between weight posets of different irreducible wmf-representations. Our main results concern wmf-representations associated with periodic gradings or Z-gradings of simple Lie algebras. For Z-gradings, we prove that $0< 2dim R-# E(R) < h$, where $h$ is the Coxeter number of $\mathfrak g$. For periodic gradings, we prove that $0\le 2dim R-# E(R)$.

Adjoint vector fields and differential operators on representation spaces

Let $G$ be a semisimple algebraic group with Lie algebra $\g$. In 1979, J. Dixmier proved that any vector field annihilating all $G$-invariant polynomials on $\g$ lies in the $\bbk[\g]$-module generated by the "adjoint vector fields", i.e., vector fields $ς$ of the form $ς(y)(x)=[x,y]$, $x,y\in\g$. A substantial generalisation of Dixmier's theorem was found by Levasseur and Stafford. They explicitly described the centraliser of $\bbk[\g]^G$ in the algebra of differential operators on $\g$. On the level of vector fields, their result reduces to Dixmier's theorem. The purpose of this paper is to explore similar problems in the general context of affine algebraic groups and their rational representations.

On orbits of antichains of positive roots

For any finite poset P, there is a natural operator $X$ acting on the antichains of P. We discuss conjectural properties of this operator for some graded posets associated with irreducible root systems. In particular, if $Δ^+$ is the set of positive roots and $Π$ is the set of simple roots in $Δ^+$, then we consider the cases $P=Δ^+$ and $Δ^+\setminus Π$. For the root system of type $A_n$, we consider an $X$-invariant integer-valued function on the set of antichains of $Δ^+$ and establish some properties of it.

Semi-direct products of Lie algebras and their invariants

The goal of this paper is to extend the standard invariant-theoretic design, well-developed in the reductive case, to the setting of representation of certain non-reductive groups. This concerns the following notions and results: the existence of generic stabilisers and generic isotropy groups for finite-dimensional representations; structure of the fields and algebras of invariants; quotient morphisms and structure of their fibres. One of the main tools for obtaining non-reductive Lie algebras is the semi-direct product construction. We observe that there are surprisingly many non-reductive Lie algebras whose adjoint representation has a polynomial algebra of invariants. We extend results of Takiff, Geoffriau, Rais-Tauvel, and Levasseur-Stafford concerning Takiff Lie algebras to a wider class of semi-direct products. This includes $Z_2$-contractions of simple Lie algebras and generalised Takiff algebras.

Periodic automorphisms of Takiff algebras, contractions, and $θ$-groups

Let $q$ be an algebraic Lie algebra and $q $ a (generalised) Takiff algebra. Any finite order automorphism $θ$ of $q$ induces an automorphisms of $q $ of the same order, denoted $Θ$. We study invariant-theoretic properties of representations of the fixed point subalgebra of $Θ$ on other eigenspaces of $Θ$ in $q $.

On the coadjoint representation of $\mathbb Z_2$-contractions of reductive Lie algebras

We study the coadjoint representation of contractions of reductive Lie algebras associated with symmetric decompositions. Let $\frak g=\frak g_0\oplus \frak g_1$ be a symmetric decomposition of a reductive Lie algebra $\frak g$. Then the semi-direct product of $\frak g_0$ and the $\frak g_0$-module $\frak g_1$ is a contraction of $\frak g$. We conjecture that these contractions have many properties in common with reductive Lie algebras. In particular, it is proved that in many cases the algebra of invariants is polynomial. We also discuss the so-called "codim--2 property" for coadjoint representations and its relationship with the structure of algebra of invariants.

The index of representations associated with stabilisers

Let $Q$ be an algebraic group and $V$ a $Q$-module. The index of $V$ is the minimal codimension of the $Q$-orbits in the dual space $V^*$. There is a general inequality, due to Vinberg, relating the index of $V$ and the index of $Q_v$-module $V/q.v$ for any $v\in V$. In this article, we study conditions that guarantee us the equality. It was recently proved by Charbonnel (Bull. Soc. Math. France. v.132, 2004) that such an equality holds for the adjoint representation of a semisimple group. Another proof for the classical series was given by the second author, see math.RT/0407065. One of our goals, which is almost achieved, is to understand what is going on in the case of isotropy representations of symmetric spaces.

The poset of positive roots and its relatives

Let $Δ$ be a root system with a subset of positive roots, $Δ^+$. We consider edges of the Hasse diagrams of some posets associated with $Δ^+$. For each edge one naturally defines its type, and we study the partition of the set of edges into types. For $Δ^+$, the type is a simple root, and for the posets of ad-nilpotent and Abelian ideals the type is an affine simple roots. We give several descriptions of the set of edges of given type and uniform expressions for the number of edges. By a result of Peterson, the number of Abelian ideals is $2^n$, where $n$ is the rank of $Δ$. We prove that the number of edges of the corresponding Hasse diagram is $(n+1)2^{n-2}$. For $Δ^+$ and the Abelian ideals, we compute the number of edges of each type and prove that the number of edges of type $α$ depends only on the length of $α$.

An extension of Rais' theorem and seaweed subalgebras of simple Lie algebras

Let $\g$ be a simple Lie algebra of type A or C. We show that the coadjoint representation of any seaweed subalgebra of $\g$ has some properties similar to that of the adjoint representation of a reductive Lie algebra. Namely, a) the field of invariants is rational and b) there exists a generic stabiliser whose identity component is a torus. Our main tool for this is a result about coadjoint representations of some N-graded Lie algebras, which can be regarded as an extension of Rais' theorem for the index of semi-direct products. For all other simple types, we give a uniform description of a parabolic subalgebra such that its coadjoint representation has no generic stabiliser. The crucial property here is that if $\g$ is not of type A or C, then the highest root is fundamental. We also show that, for any parabolic subgroup, the ring of regular invariants of the coadjoint representation is trivial.

Normalizers of ad-nilpotent ideals

Let $\be$ be a Borel subalgebra of a complex simple Lie algebra $\g$. An ideal of $\be$ is called ad-nilpotent, if it is contained in $[\be,\be]$. We give several descriptions of the normalizer of an ad-nilpotent ideal: using the weight of an ideal, or the affine Weyl group, or a relationship with dominant regions of the Shi arrangement. We also give a description of those ideals whose normalizer is equal to $\be$. For sl(n) and sp(2n), explicit enumerative results are obtained, which demonstrate a connection with some famous integer sequences.

On Invarinat Theory of $θ$-groups

This paper is a contribution to Vinberg's theory of $θ$-groups, or in other words, to Invariant Theory of periodically graded semisimple Lie algebras. One of our main tools is Springer's theory of regular elements of finite reflection groups

Ideals of Heisenberg type and minimax elements of affine Weyl groups

We consider ad-nilpotent ideals of a Borel subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra. The goal of this paper is two-fold. First, we study the ad-nilpotent ideals lying inside the Heisenberg ideal. The Heisenberg ideal is the nilpotent radical of the centralizer of the highest root vector. Second, we study the ideals having the property that the corresponding domain of the Shi arrangement consists of a single alcove. Such ideals (and the corresponding elements of the affine Weyl group) are called minimax.

Short antichains in root systems, semi-Catalan arrangements, and B-stable subspaces

Let $\be$ be a Borel subalgebra of a complex simple Lie algebra $\g$. An ideal of $\be$ is called ad-nilpotent, if it is contained in $[\be,\be]$. The generators of an ad-nilpotent ideal give rise to an antichain in the poset of positive roots, and the whole theory can be expressed in a combinatorial fashion, in terms of antichains. The aim of this paper is to present a refinement of the enumerative theory of ad-nilpotent ideals for the case in which $\g$ has roots of different length. An antichain is called short, if it consists of short roots. We obtain, for short antichains, analogues of all results known for the usual antichains.

Long Abelian ideals

We study Abelian ideals of a Borel subalgebra consisting of long roots. It is shown that methods of Cellini and Papi can be extended to this situation. A uniform expression for the number of long Abelian ideals is given. We also show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the long Abelian ideals and B-stable commutative subalgebras in the little adjoint representation of the Langlands dual Lie algebra.
