More on $T \overline{T}$-like deformations in higher dimensions

We investigate several possible generalisations of $T\overline{T}$ deformations to three- and higher-dimensional field theories. Starting from the two-dimensional $T\overline{T}$ flow, we work out its higher-dimensional uplift, which results in a non-local and non-isotropic three-dimensional theory. Starting instead from the relation between the Nambu-Goto action and $T\overline{T}$ in $d=2$, we study the flow equation obeyed by the Dirac-Nambu-Goto actions in $d>2$ dimensions, written in terms of the stress-energy tensor only. Similarly, we derive the stress-tensor flow obeyed by the Born-Infeld actions in $d$ dimensions and by the Dirac-Born-Infeld actions in $d=2$ and $d=3$.

Tensionless limit of M5-brane and conformal symmetry of its bosonic body

We obtain a tensionless limit of the M-theory 5-brane action and discuss its properties. The consistency of this limit requires that the field strength of the worldvolume 2-form gauge field on the M5 brane worldvolume is non-degenerate and never vanishes. Also the induced $6d$ worldvolume metric of this theory is non-degenerate in contrast to conventional tensionless (null) $p$-branes. We find that the tensionless M5-brane action is invariant under a super-Weyl symmetry acting on the bulk supergeometry, while in the purely bosonic case the action is invariant under an 11D target-space conformal symmetry, a property which is characteristic for the tensionless bosonic branes. Upon imposing a static gauge, which fixes worldvolume diffeomorphisms, this 11D conformal symmetry becomes a deformed 6d worldovolume conformal symmetry whose action on the worldvolume coordinates involves field dependent terms. When the transversal fluctuations of the 5-brane in the bulk are zero, the model reduces to the conformal non-linear chiral 2-form electrodynamics considered earlier by Gibbons and West, and by Townsend.

Some remarks on invariants

The demand to know the structure of functionally independent invariants of tensor fields arises in many problems of theoretical and mathematical physics, for instance for the construction of interacting higher-order tensor field actions. In mathematical terms the problem can be formulated as follows. Given a semi-simple finite-dimensional Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ and a $\mathfrak g$-module $V$, one may ask about the structure of the sub-ring of $\mathfrak g$-invariants inside the ring freely generated by the module. We point out how some information about the ring of invariants may be obtained by studying an extended Lie algebra. Numerous examples are given, with particular focus on the difficult problem of classifying invariants of a self-dual 5-form in 10 dimensions.

On non-linear chiral 4-form theories in D=10

We consider properties of non-linear theories of a chiral 4-form gauge field $A_4$ in ten space-time dimensions with an emphasis on a subclass of these theories which are invariant under the $D = 10$ conformal symmetry. We show that general results regarding a peculiar structure of duality-invariant abelian gauge theories in four and six space-time dimensions do not extend to non-linear chiral 4-form theories in ten dimensions. This discrepancy arises primarily from the large number 81 of independent invariants constructible from the self-dual part of the five-form field strength $F_5=dA_4$ in $D=10$, in stark contrast to the single independent (fourth-order) invariants which are building blocks of the actions in the lower dimensional cases. In particular, unlike the $D=4$ and $D=6$ cases, where non-linear duality-invariant theories can be viewed as stress-tensor ($T\overline T$-like) deformations of seed theories, the flow equations in $D=10$ generally involve both stress-tensor invariants and additional higher-order structures constructed from $F_5$. In passing, we prove the equivalence of three Lagrangian formulations of non-linear duality-invariant $p$-form theories: the PST, the Ivanov-Nurmagambetov-Zupnik and the ``clone" one.

The Incomprehensible Simplicity of PST

There is a hearsay that the PST approach to the covariant Lagrangian description of relativistic duality invariant theories is somewhat complicated. I will show, using an example of a chiral two-form field theory in six space-time dimensions, that it is actually natural and very simple. It directly stems from the Hamiltonian formulation of chiral-form theories.

Waves and strings in an interacting conformal chiral 2-form theory in six dimensions

In six dimensions there exists a unique one-parameter family of non-linear conformal electrodynamics for a chiral 2-form gauge field which includes (in a free-field limit) the linear chiral 2-form theory and is related, by dimensional reduction, to the four-dimensional ModMax electrodynamics. In this work, we present the first exact solutions of this theory in presence of gravity. In particular, we will consider plane-wave, Robinson-Trautman, and self-dual dyonic string configurations, generalizing well-known solutions of this type in six-dimensional supergravities with linear chiral 2-form multiplets.

Superembedding approach to superstrings and super-p-branes

We review a geometrical, so called superembedding, approach to the description of the dynamics of point-like and extended supersymmetric objects (superbranes) in String Theory. The approach is based on a supersymmetric extension of the classical surface theory to the description of superbrane dynamics by means of embedding worldvolume supersurfaces into target superspaces. Lorentz harmonics, twistors and pure spinors are its intrinsic ingredients. Main new results obtained with this approach include the following ones. Being manifestly doubly supersymmetric (on the worldvolume and in target superspace) the superembedding approach explained that the local fermionic kappa-symmetry of the Green-Schwarz-like superbrane actions originates from the conventional local supersymmetry of the worldvolume. It established or clarified a classical relationship between various formulations of the dynamics of superparticles and superstrings, such as the Neveu-Schwarz-Ramond and the Green-Schwarz formulation. The full set of the equations of motion of the M-theory five-brane was first derived with the use of this approach.

Interacting Chiral Form Field Theories and $T\overline T$-like Flows in Six and Higher Dimensions

In this paper we initiate the study of six-dimensional non-linear chiral two-form gauge theories as deformations of free chiral two-form gauge theories driven by stress-tensor $T\overline T$-like flows. To lay the background for this study, we elaborate on the relationship between different Lagrangian formulations of duality-invariant p-form theories and corresponding $T\overline T$-like flows in various dimensions. To this end we propose a new formulation which (i) is a generalization of the four-dimensional construction by Ivanov, Nurmagambetov and Zupnik (INZ) and (ii) turns into the PST formulation upon integrating out an auxiliary self-dual field. We elucidate space-time covariant properties of the PST formulation by clarifying and making use of its relation to the INZ-type formulation and to a so-called ``clone" construction.

Introductory Notes on Non-linear Electrodynamics and its Applications

In 1933-1934 Born and Infeld constructed the first non-linear generalization of Maxwell's electrodynamics that turned out to be a remarkable theory in many respects. In 1935 Heisenberg and Euler computed a complete effective action describing non-linear corrections to Maxwell's theory due to quantum electron-positron one-loop effects. Since then, these and a variety of other models of non-linear electrodynamics proposed in the course of decades have been extensively studied and used in a wide range of areas of theoretical physics including string theory, gravity, cosmology and condensed matter (CMT). In these notes I will overview general properties of non-linear electrodynamics and particular models which are distinguished by their symmetries and physical properties, such as a recently discovered unique non-linear modification of Maxwell's electrodynamics which is conformal and duality invariant. I will also sketch how non-linear electromagnetic effects may manifest themselves in physical phenomena (such as vacuum birefringence), in properties of gravitational objects (e.g. charged black holes) and in the evolution of the universe, and can be used, via gravity/CMT holography, for the description of properties of certain conducting and insulating materials.

Maximally symmetric nonlinear extension of electrodynamics and charged particles

We consider couplings of electrically and magnetically charged sources to the maximally symmetric non-linear extension of Maxwell's theory called ModMax. The aim is to reveal physical effects which distinguish ModMax from Maxwell's electrodynamics. We find that, in contrast to generic models of non-linear electrodynamics, Lienard-Wiechert fields induced by a moving electric or magnetic particle, or a dyon are exact solutions of the ModMax equations of motion. We then study whether and how ModMax non-linearity affects properties of electromagnetic interactions of charged objects, in particular the Lorentz force, the Coulomb law, the Lienard-Wiechert fields, Dirac's and Schwinger's quantization of electric and magnetic charges, and the Compton Effect. In passing we also present an alternative form of the ModMax Lagrangian in terms of the coupling of Maxwell's theory to axion-dilaton-like auxiliary scalar fields which may be relevant for revealing the effective field theory origin of ModMax.

Reducible higher-spin multiplets in flat and AdS spaces and their geometric frame-like formulation

We consider the frame-like formulation of reducible sets of totally symmetric bosonic and fermionic higher-spin fields in flat and AdS backgrounds of any dimension, that correspond to so-called higher-spin triplets resulting from the string-inspired BRST approach. The explicit relationship of the fields of higher-spin triplets to the higher-spin vielbeins and connections is found. The gauge invariant actions are constructed including, in particular, the reducible (i.e. triplet) higher-spin fermion case in AdS_D space.

Various Faces of Type IIA Supergravity

We derive a duality-symmetric action for type IIA D=10 supergravity by the Kaluza-Klein dimensional reduction of the duality-symmetric action for D=11 supergravity with the 3-form and 6-form gauge field. We then double the bosonic fields arising as a result of the Kaluza-Klein dimensional reduction and add mass terms to embrace the Romans's version, so that in its final form the bosonic part of the action contains the dilaton, NS-NS and RR potentials of the standard type IIA supergravity as well as their duals, the corresponding duality relations are deduced directly from the action. We discuss the relation of our approach to the doubled field formalism by Cremmer, Julia, Lu and Pope, complete the extension of this construction to the supersymmetric case and lift it onto the level of the proper duality-symmetric action. We also find a new dual formulation of type IIA D=10 supergravity in which the NS-NS two-form potential is replaced with its six-form counterpart. A truncation of this dual model produces the Chamseddine's version of N=1, D=10 supergravity.
