Spherical metrics with conical singularities on a 2-sphere: angle constraints

In this article we give a criterion for the existence of a metric of curvature $1$ on a $2$-sphere with $n$ conical singularities of prescribed angles $2π\vartheta_1,\dots,2π\vartheta_n$ and non-coaxial holonomy. Such a necessary and sufficient condition is expressed in terms of linear inequalities in $\vartheta_1,\dots,\vartheta_n$.

Circle-invariant fat bundles and symplectic Fano 6-manifolds

We prove that a compact 4-manifold which supports a circle-invariant fat SO(3)-bundle is diffeomorphic to either S^4 or CP^2-bar. The proof involves studying the resulting Hamiltonian circle action on an associated symplectic 6-manifold. Applying our result to the twistor bundle of Riemannian 4-manifolds shows that S^4 and CP^2-bar are the only 4-manifolds admitting circle-invariant metrics solving a certain curvature inequality. This can be seen as an analogue of Hsiang-Kliener's theorem that only S^4 and CP^2 admit circle-invariant metrics of positive sectional curvature.

The diversity of symplectic Calabi-Yau six-manifolds

Given an integer b and a finitely presented group G we produce a compact symplectic six-manifold with c_1 = 0, b_2 > b, b_3 > b and fundamental group G. In the simply-connected case we can also arrange for b_3 = 0; in particular these examples are not diffeomorphic to Kähler manifolds with c_1 = 0. The construction begins with a certain orientable four-dimensional hyperbolic orbifold assembled from right-angled 120-cells. The twistor space of the hyperbolic orbifold is a symplectic Calabi-Yau orbifold; a crepant resolution of this last orbifold produces a smooth symplectic manifold with the required properties.

Complex surfaces with CAT(0) metrics

We study complex surfaces with locally CAT(0) polyhedral Kahler metrics and construct such metrics on CP^2 with various orbifold structures. In particular, in relation to questions of Gromov and Davis-Moussong we construct such metrics on a compact quotient of the two-dimensional unite complex ball. In the course of the proof of these results we give criteria for Sasakian 3-manifolds to be globally CAT(1). We show further that for certain Kummer coverings of CP^2 of sufficiently high degree their desingularizations are of type K(pi,1).

Hyperbolic geometry and non-Kahler manifolds with trivial canonical bundle

We use hyperbolic geometry to construct simply-connected symplectic or complex manifolds with trivial canonical bundle and with no compatible Kahler structure. We start with the desingularisations of the quadric cone in C^4: the smoothing is a natural S^3-bundle over H^3, its holomorphic geometry is determined by the hyperbolic metric; the small-resolution is a natural S^2-bundle over H^4 with symplectic geometry determined by the metric. Using hyperbolic geometry, we find orbifold quotients with trivial canonical bundle; smooth examples are produced via crepant resolutions. In particular, we find the first example of a simply-connected symplectic 6-manifold with c_1=0 that does not admit a compatible Kahler structure. We also find infinitely many distinct complex structures on 2(S^3xS^3)#(S^2xS^4) with trivial canonical bundle. Finally, we explain how an analogous construction for hyperbolic manifolds in higher dimensions gives symplectic non-Kahler "Fano" manifolds of dimension 12 and higher.

Polyhedral Kahler Manifolds

In this article we introduce the notion of Polyhedral Kahler manifolds, even dimensional polyhedral manifolds with unitary holonomy. We concentrate on the 4-dimensional case, prove that such manifolds are smooth complex surfaces, and classify the singularities of the metric. The singularities form a divisor and the residues of the flat connection on the complement of the divisor give us a system of cohomological equations. Parabolic version of Kobayshi-Hitchin correspondence of T. Mochizuki permits us to characterize polyhedral Kahler metrics of non-negative curvature on CP^2 with singularities at complex line arrangements.

Slope Stability and Exceptional Divisors of High Genus

We study slope stability of smooth surfaces and its connection with exceptional divisors. We show that a surface containing an exceptional divisor with arithmetic genus at least two is slope unstable for some polarisation. In the converse direction we show that slope stability of surfaces can be tested with divisors, and prove that for surfaces with non-negative Kodaira dimension any destabilising divisor must have negative self-intersection and arithmetic genus at least two. We also prove that a destabilising divisor can never be nef, and as an application give an example of a surface that is slope stable but not K-stable.

Symplectic Calabi-Yau manifolds, minimal surfaces and the hyperbolic geometry of the conifold

Given an SO(3)-bundle with connection, the associated two-sphere bundle carries a natural closed 2-form. Asking that this be symplectic gives a curvature inequality first considered by Reznikov. We study this inequality in the case when the base has dimension four, with three main aims. Firstly, we use this approach to construct symplectic six-manifolds with c_1=0 which are never Kahler; e.g., we produce such manifolds with b_1=0=b_3 and also with c_2.omega <0, answering questions posed by Smith-Thomas-Yau. Examples come from Riemannian geometry, via the Levi-Civita connection on Lambda^+. The underlying six-manifold is then the twistor space and often the symplectic structure tames the Eells-Salamon twistor almost complex structure. Our second aim is to exploit this to deduce new results about minimal surfaces: if a certain curvature inequality holds, it follows that the space of minimal surfaces (with fixed topological invariants) is compactifiable; the minimal surfaces must also satisfy an adjunction inequality, unifying and generalising results of Chen--Tian. One metric satisfying the curvature inequality is hyperbolic four-space H^4. Our final aim is to show that the corresponding symplectic manifold is symplectomorphic to the small resolution of the conifold xw-yz=0 in C^4. We explain how this fits into a hyperbolic description of the conifold transition, with isometries of H^4 acting symplectomorphically on the resolution and isometries of H^3 acting biholomorphically on the smoothing.

Enumeration of almost polynomial rational functions with given critical values

Enumerating ramified coverings of the sphere with fixed ramification types is a well-known problem first considered by A. Hurwitz. Up to now, explicit solutions have been obtained only for some families of ramified coverings, for instant, those realized by polynomials in one complex variable. In this paper we obtain an explicit answer for a large new family of coverings, namely, the coverings realized by simple almost polynomials, defined below. Unlike most other results in the field, our formula is obtained by elementary methods.

Counting Meromorphic Functions with Critical Points of Large Multiplicities

We study the number of meromorphic functions on a Riemann surface with given critical values and prescribed multiplicities of critical points and values. When the Riemann surface is $\CP^1$ and the function is a polynomial, we give an elementary way of finding this number. In the general case, we show that, as the multiplicities of critical points tend to infinity, the asymptotic for the number of meromorphic functions is given by the volume of some space of graphs glued from circles. We express this volume as a matrix integral.
