Trirefringence and the M5-brane

The Hamiltonian formulation for nonlinear chiral 2-form electrodynamics in six-dimensional Minkowski spacetime is used to show that small-amplitude plane-wave perturbations of a generic uniform constant `magnetic' background exhibit trirefringence: all three independent wave-polarisations have distinct dispersion relations. While two coincide for Lorentz invariant theories, all three coincide uniquely for the chiral 2-form theory on the worldvolume of the M5-brane of M-theory. We argue that this is because, in this M-theory context, the waves propagate in a planar M5-M2-M2 bound-state preserving 16 supersymmetries. We also show how our results imply analogous results for nonlinear electrodynamics in a Minkowski spacetime of five and four dimensions.

Universal aspects of holographic quantum critical transport with self-duality

We prove several universal properties of charge transport in generic CFTs holographic to nonminimal extensions of four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory with exact electromagnetic duality invariance. First, we explicitly verify that the conductivity of these theories at zero momentum is a universal frequency-independent constant. Then, we derive their analytical expressions for non-zero momentum in any holographic duality-invariant theory for large frequencies and in the limit of small frequencies and momenta. Next, in the absence of terms that couple covariant derivatives of the curvature to gauge field strengths, two universal features are proven. On the one hand, it is shown that for a general-relativity neutral black-hole background the conductivities at any frequency and momentum are independent of the choice of duality-invariant theory, thus coinciding with those in the Einstein-Maxwell case. On the other hand, if higher-curvature terms affect the gravitational background, the conductivities get modified, but the contributions from nonminimal couplings of the gauge field to gravity are subleading. We illustrate this feature with an example.

Super Non-Abelian T-Duality

We analyse super non-Abelian T-duality for principal chiral models, symmetric space sigma models, and semi-symmetric space sigma models for general Lie supergroups. This includes T-duality along both bosonic and fermionic directions. As an example, we perform the explicit dualisation of the OSp(1|2) principal chiral model, and, whilst the target superspace of this model is a three-dimensional supergravity background, we find that its super non-Abelian T-dual falls outside the class of such backgrounds.

ModMax meets Susy

We give a prescription for N=1 supersymmetrization of any (four-dimensional) nonlinear electrodynamics theory with a Lagrangian density satisfying a convexity condition that we relate to semi-classical unitarity. We apply it to the one-parameter ModMax extension of Maxwell electrodynamics that preserves both electromagnetic duality and conformal invariance, and its Born-Infeld-like generalization, proving that duality invariance is preserved. We also establish superconformal invariance of the superModMax theory by showing that its coupling to supergravity is super-Weyl invariant. The higher-derivative photino-field interactions that appear in any supersymmetric nonlinear electrodynamics theory are removed by an invertible nonlinear superfield redefinition.

On p-form gauge theories and their conformal limits

Relations between the various formulations of nonlinear p-form electrodynamics with conformal-invariant weak-field and strong-field limits are clarified, with a focus on duality invariant (2n-1)-form electrodynamics and chiral 2n-form electrodynamics in Minkowski spacetime of dimension D=4n and D=4n+2, respectively. We exhibit a new family of chiral 2-form electrodynamics in D=6 for which these limits exhaust the possibilities for conformal invariance; the weak-field limit is related by dimensional reduction to the recently discovered ModMax generalisation of Maxwell's equations. For n>1 we show that the chiral `strong-field' 2n-form electrodynamics is related by dimensional reduction to a new Sl(2;R)-duality invariant theory of (2n-1)-form electrodynamics.

A non-linear duality-invariant conformal extension of Maxwell's equations

All nonlinear extensions of the source-free Maxwell equations preserving both SO(2) electromagnetic duality invariance and conformal invariance are found, and shown to be limits of a one-parameter generalisation of Born-Infeld electrodynamics. The strong-field limit is the same as that found by Bialynicki-Birula from Born-Infeld theory but the weak-field limit is a new one-parameter extension of Maxwell electrodynamics, which is interacting but admits exact light-velocity plane-wave solutions of arbitrary polarisation. Small-amplitude waves on a constant uniform electromagnetic background exhibit birefringence, but one polarisation mode remains lightlike.

Spontaneously Broken 3d Hietarinta/Maxwell Chern-Simons Theory and Minimal Massive Gravity

We show that minimal massive 3d gravity (MMG), as well as the topological massive gravity, are particular cases of a more general `minimal massive gravity' theory (with a single massive propagating mode) arising upon spontaneous breaking of a local symmetry in a Chern-Simons gravity based on a Hietarinta or Maxwell algebra. Similar to the MMG case, the requirements that the propagating massive mode is neither tachyon nor ghost and that the central charges of an asymptotic algebra associated with a boundary CFT are positive, impose restrictions on the range of the parameters of the theory.

How $\mathcal N=1$, $D=4$ SYM domain walls look like

We review main features of the pure $\mathcal N=1$, $D=4$ SYM and its effective description by the Veneziano-Yankielowicz generalized sigma-model. We then indicate that the construction of BPS domain walls interpolating between different SYM vacua requires the presence of a dynamical membrane source. We will show how such a membrane is coupled to the SYM and present the explicit form of BPS domain walls which it creates in the Veneziano-Yankielowicz effective theory. In particular, we will describe 1/2 BPS domain wall configurations with $|k|\leq N/3$, where $k$ is the membrane charge that sets the "distance" between two distinct SUSY vacua.

Supermembranes and domain walls in $\mathcal N=1$, $D=4$ SYM

We construct a manifestly supersymmetric and kappa-symmetry invariant worldvolume action describing the coupling of a dynamical membrane to an $\mathcal N=1$, $D=4$ $SU(N)$ super-Yang-Mills multiplet. Worldvolume scalar fields in this action are a Goldstone and a Goldstino associated with spontaneous breaking, by the membrane, of half of $\mathcal N=1$, $D=4$ supersymmetry. When the Goldstone fields are set to zero, the model reduces to an $\mathcal N=1$, $d=3$ $SU(N)$ Chern-Simons theory induced by the SYM coupling. We show that, when the membrane couples to the Veneziano-Yankielowicz (VY) effective theory of the $\mathcal N=1$ SYM, it sources VY bulk field equations, separates two distinct SYM vacua and provides the missing contribution to the tension of BPS saturated domain-wall configurations, for which the membrane serves as a core. As a result, we obtain explicit BPS domain-wall solutions in the Veneziano-Yankielowicz theory. We also briefly discuss a supersymmetric system of an open membrane having a string attached to its boundary and coupled to a massive extension of the Veneziano-Yankielowicz model.

How many fluxes fit in an EFT?

We extend the recent construction of 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ three-form Lagrangians by including the most general three-form multiplets necessary to reproduce any F-term potential in string flux compactifications. In this context we find an obstruction to dualize all fluxes to three-forms in the effective field theory. This implies that, generically, a single EFT cannot capture all the membrane-mediated flux transitions expected from a string theory construction, but only a sublattice of them. The obstruction can be detected from the maximal number of three-forms per scalar in any supermultiplet, and from the gaugings involving three-forms that appear in the EFT. Some gaugings are related to the appearance of fluxes in the tadpole conditions, and give a general obstruction. Others are related to the anomalous axionic strings present in a specific compactification regime. We illustrate the structure of the three-form Lagrangian in type II and F/M-theory setups, where we argue that the above obstructions correlate with the different 4d membrane tensions with respect to the EFT energy scales.

Three-dimensional (higher-spin) gravities with extended Schrödinger and $l$-conformal Galilean symmetries

We show that an extended $3D$ Schrödinger algebra introduced in [1] can be reformulated as a $3D$ Poincaré algebra extended with an SO(2) R-symmetry generator and an $SO(2)$ doublet of bosonic spin-1/2 generators whose commutator closes on $3D$ translations and a central element. As such, a non-relativistic Chern-Simons theory based on the extended Schrödinger algebra studied in [1] can be reinterpreted as a relativistic Chern-Simons theory. The latter can be obtained by a contraction of the $SU(1,2)\times SU(1,2)$ Chern-Simons theory with a non principal embedding of $SL(2,\mathbb R)$ into $SU(1,2)$. The non-relativisic Schrödinger gravity of [1] and its extended Poincaré gravity counterpart are obtained by choosing different asymptotic (boundary) conditions in the Chern-Simons theory. We also consider extensions of a class of so-called $l$-conformal Galilean algebras, which includes the Schrödinger algebra as its member with $l=1/2$, and construct Chern-Simons higher-spin gravities based on these algebras.

Hamiltonian analysis of mimetic scalar gravity revisited

We perform the Hamiltonian analysis of several mimetic gravity models and compare our results with those obtained previously by different authors. We verify that for healthy mimetic scalar-tensor theories the condition for the corresponding part of the Hamiltonian to be bounded from below is the positive value of the mimetic field energy density $λ$. We show that for mimetic dark matter possessing a shift symmetry the mimetic energy density remains positive in time, provided appropriate boundary conditions are imposed on its initial value, while in models without shift symmetry the positive energy density can be maintained by simply replacing $λ\to e^λ$. The same result also applies to mimetic $f(R)$ gravity, which is healthy if the usual stability conditions of the standard $f(R)$ gravity are assumed and $λ>0$. In contrast, if we add mimetic matter to an unhealthy seed action, the resulting mimetic gravity theory remains, in general, unstable. As an example, we consider a scalar-tensor theory with the higher-derivative term $(\Box φ)^2$, which contains an Ostrogradski ghost. We also revisit results regarding stability issues of linear perturbations around the FLRW background of the mimetic dark matter in the presence of ordinary scalar matter. We find that the presence of conventional matter does not revive dynamical ghost modes (at least in the UV limit). The modes, whose Hamiltonian is not positive definite, are non-propagating (have zero sound speed) and are associated with the mimetic matter itself. They are already present in the case in which the ordinary scalar fluid is absent, causing a growth of dust overdensity.

Can Chern-Simons or Rarita-Schwinger be a Volkov-Akulov Goldstone?

We study three-dimensional non-linear models of vector and vector-spinor Goldstone fields associated with the spontaneous breaking of certain higher-spin counterparts of supersymmetry whose Lagrangians are of a Volkov-Akulov type. Goldstone fields in these models transform non-linearly under the spontaneously broken rigid symmetries. We find that the leading term in the action of the vector Goldstone model is the Abelian Chern-Simons action whose gauge symmetry is broken by a quartic term. As a result, the model has a propagating degree of freedom which, in a decoupling limit, is a quartic Galileon scalar field. The vector-spinor goldstino model turns out to be a non-linear generalization of the three-dimensional Rarita-Schwinger action. In contrast to the vector Goldstone case, this non-linear model retains the gauge symmetry of the Rarita-Schwinger action and eventually reduces to the latter by a non-linear field redefinition. We thus find that the free Rarita-Schwinger action is invariant under a hidden rigid supersymmetry generated by fermionic vector-spinor operators and acting non-linearly on the Rarita-Schwinger goldstino.

Three-forms, dualities and membranes in four-dimensional supergravity

We consider four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity models of a kind appearing in string flux compactifications. It has been recently shown that, by using double three-form multiplets instead of ordinary chiral multiplets, one can promote to dynamical variables (part of) the quantized numbers appearing in the flux-induced superpotential. We show that double three-form multiplets naturally transform under symplectic dualities associated with the special Kähler structure that characterizes their scalar sector. Furthermore, we discuss how to couple membranes which carry arbitrary `electric-magnetic' charges. The complete action is supersymmetric, kappa-symmetric and duality covariant. As an application, we derive the flow equations for BPS domain walls sourced by membranes and give simple analytic examples of their solution.

Three-forms in Supergravity and Flux Compactifications

We present a duality procedure that relates conventional four-dimensional matter-coupled N=1 supergravities to dual formulations in which auxiliary fields are replaced by field-strengths of gauge three-forms. The duality promotes specific coupling constants appearing in the superpotential to vacuum expectation values of the field-strengths. We then apply this general duality to type IIA string compactifications on Calabi-Yau orientifolds with RR fluxes. This gives a new supersymmetric formulation of the corresponding effective four-dimensional theories which includes gauge three-forms.

Supersymmetric Reducible Higher-Spin Multiplets in Various Dimensions

We construct, in D=3,4,6 and 10 space-time dimensions, supersymmetric Lagrangians for free massless higher spin fields which belong to reducible representations of the Poincare group. The fermionic part of these models consists of spinor-tensor fields which are totally symmetrical with respect to their tensor indices, while the bosonic part contains totally symmetric tensor fields as well as the simplest mixed-symmetry fields. A peculiar feature of these models is that they describe higher- and lower-spin supermultiplets in different dimensions in a uniform way.

Three-forms, Supersymmetry and String Compactifications

We review a duality procedure that relates standard matter-coupled N=1 supergravity to dual formulations in which auxiliary fields are replaced by field-strengths of gauge three-forms. As examples, we consider the dualization of the rigid Polonyi model and of effective field theories associated with Type IIA string compactifications with fluxes in supergravity.
