Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the Fractional Quantum Hall regime

We consider tunneling between two edges of Quantum Hall liquids (QHL) of filling factors $ν_{0,1}=1/(2 m_{0,1}+1)$, with $m_0 \geq m_1\geq 0$, through two point contacts forming Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Quasi-particle description of the interferometer is derived explicitly through the instanton duality transformation of the initial electron model. For $m_{0}+m_{1}+1\equiv m>1$, tunneling of quasiparticles of charge $e/m$ leads to non-trivial $m$-state dynamics of effective flux through the interferometer, which restores the regular ``electron'' periodicity of the current in flux. The exact solution available for equal propagation times between the contacts along the two edges demonstrates that the interference pattern in the tunneling current depends on voltage and temperature only through a common amplitude.

Correlated transport of FQHE quasiparticles in a double-antidot system

We have calculated the linear conductance associated with tunneling of individual quasiparticles of primary quantum Hall liquids with filling factors $ν=1/(2m+1)$ through a system of two antidots in series. On-site Coulomb interaction simulates the Fermi exclusion and makes the quasiparticle dynamics similar to that of tunneling electrons. The liquid edges serve as the quasiparticle reservoirs, and also create the dissipation mechanism for tunneling between the antidots. In the regime of strong dissipation, the conductance should exhibit resonant peaks of unusual form and a width proportional to the quasiparticle interaction energy $U$. In the weakly-damped regime, the shape of the resonant conductance peaks reflects coherent tunnel coupling of the antidots. The Luttinger-liquid singularity in the rates of quasiparticle tunneling to/from the liquid edges manifests itself as an additional weak resonant structure in the conductance curves.

Mesoscopic quantum measurements

The paper discusses dynamics of quantum measurements in mesoscopic solid-state systems. The aim is to show how the general ideas of the quantum measurement theory play out in the realistic models of actual mesoscopic detectors. The two general models of ballistic and tunneling detectors are described and studied quantitatively. Simple transformation cycle demonstrating wavefunction reduction in a mesosocpic qubit is suggested.

Comment on "Strongly correlated Fractional Quantum Hall line junction"

Physical Review Letter {\bf 90}, 026802 (2003) by U. Zülicke and E. Shimshoni and subsequent extended paper proposed an ``exact solution'' of the problem of a tunnel junction of length $L$ between two single-mode edges of the Fractional Quantum Hall Liquids with different filling factors $ν_{j}=1/(2m_j+1)$, $j=1,2$; $m_j=0,1,...$. The purpose of this comment is to point out that the solution found in these papers is not correct and to present correct solution of a particular instance of this model.

Rapid Ballistic Readout for Flux Qubits

We suggest a new type of the magnetic flux detector which can be optimized with respect to the measurement back-action, e.g. for the situation of quantum measurements. The detector is based on manipulation of ballistic motion of individual fluxons in a Josephson transmission line (JTL), with the output information contained in either probabilities of fluxon transmission/reflection, or time delay associated with the fluxon propagation through the JTL. We calculate the detector characteristics of the JTL and derive equations for conditional evolution of the measured system both in the transmission/reflection and the time-delay regimes. Combination of the quantum-limited detection with control over individual fluxons should make the JTL detector suitable for implementation of non-trivial quantum measurement strategies, including conditional measurements and feedback control schemes.

Counting statistics and detector properties of quantum point contacts

Quantum detector properties of the quantum point contact (QPC) are analyzed for arbitrary electron transparency and coupling strength to the measured system and are shown to be determined by the electron counting statistics. Conditions of the quantum-limited operation of the QPC detector which prevent information loss through the scattering time and scattering phases are found for arbitrary coupling. We show that the phase information can be restored and used for the quantum-limited detection by inclusion of the QPC detector in the electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer.

A model of deterministic detector with dynamical decoherence

We discuss a deterministic model of detector coupled to a two-level system (a qubit). The detector is a quasi-classical object whose dynamics is described by the kicked rotator Hamiltonian. We show that in the regime of quantum chaos the detector acts as a chaotic bath and induces decoherence of the qubit. We discuss the dephasing and relaxation rates and demonstrate that several features of Ohmic baths can be reproduced by our fully deterministic model. Moreover, we show that, for strong enough qubit-detector coupling, the dephasing rate is given by the rate of exponential instability of the detector's dynamics, that is, by the Lyapunov exponent of classical motion. Finally, we discuss the measurement in the regimes of strong and weak qubit-detector coupling. For the case of strong coupling the detector performs a measurement of the up/down state of the qubit. In the case of weak coupling, due to chaos, the dynamical evolution of the detector is strongly sensitive to the state of the qubit. However, in this case it is unclear how to extract a signal from any measurement with a coarse-graining in the phase space on a size much larger than the Planck cell.

Continuous measurements of two qubits

We develop a theory of coherent quantum oscillations in two, in general interacting, qubits measured continuously by a mesoscopic detector with arbitrary non-linearity and discuss an example of SQUID magnetometer that can operate as such a detector. Calculated spectra of the detector output show that the detector non-linearity should lead to mixing of the oscillations of the two qubits. For non-interacting qubits oscillating with frequencies $Ω_1$ and $Ω_2$, the mixing manifests itself as spectral peaks at the combination frequencies $Ω_1\pm Ω_2$. Additional nonlinearity introduced by the qubit-qubit interaction shifts all the frequencies. In particular, for identical qubits, the interaction splits coherent superposition of the single-qubit peaks at $Ω_1=Ω_2$. Quantum mechanics of the measurement imposes limitations on the height of the spectral peaks.

Quadratic Quantum Measurements

We develop a theory of quadratic quantum measurements by a mesoscopic detector. It is shown that quadratic measurements should have non-trivial quantum information properties, providing, for instance, a simple way of entangling two non-interacting qubits. We also calculate output spectrum of a quantum detector with both linear and quadratic response continuously monitoring coherent oscillations in two qubits.

Decoherence in two coupled qubits

We have developed quantitative description of quantum coherent oscillations in the system of two coupled qubits in the presence of weak decoherence that in general can be correlated between the two qubits. It is shown that in the experimentally realized scheme of excitation of the oscillations, their waveform is not very sensitive to the magnitude of decoherence correlations. Modification of this scheme into potentially useful probe of the degree of decoherence correlations at the two qubits is suggested.

Active suppression of dephasing in Josephson-junction qubits

Simple majority code correcting $k$ dephasing errors by encoding a qubit of information into $2k+1$ physical qubits is studied quantitatively. We derive an equation for quasicontinuous evolution of the density matrix of encoded quantum information under the error correction procedure in the presence of dephasing noise that in general can be correlated at different qubits. Specific design of the Josephson-junction circuit implementing this scheme is suggested.

Electron Transport in Mesoscopic Disordered SNS Junctions

We have generalized the scattering-matrix theory of multiple Andreev reflections in mesoscopic Josephson junctions to the multi-mode case, and applied it to short superconductor/normal metal/superconductor junctions with diffusive electron transport. Both the dc and ac current-voltage characteristics are analyzed for a wide range of bias voltages $V$. For voltages smaller than the supeconducting gap the dc differential conductance of the junction diverges as $1/\sqrt{V}$.
