Interface Conformal Anomalies

We consider two $d \geq 2$ conformal field theories (CFTs) glued together along a codimension one conformal interface. The conformal anomaly of such a system contains both bulk and interface contributions. In a curved-space setup, we compute the heat kernel coefficients and interface central charges in free theories. The results are consistent with the known boundary CFT data via the folding trick. In $d=4$, two interface invariants generally allowed as anomalies turn out to have vanishing interface charges. These missing invariants are constructed from components with odd parity with respect to flipping the orientation of the defect. We conjecture that all invariants constructed from components with odd parity may have vanishing coefficient for symmetric interfaces, even in the case of interacting interface CFT.

Graphene through the looking glass of QFT

This paper is aimed to review and promote the main applications of the methods of Quantum Field Theory to description of quantum effects in graphene. We formulate the effective electromagnetic action following from the Dirac model for the quasiparticles in graphene and apply it for derivation of different observable effects like the induced mean charge, quantized conductivity, Faraday effect, and Casimir interaction involving graphene samples.

Finite temperature Casimir effect for graphene

We adopt the Dirac model for quasiparticles in graphene and calculate the finite temperature Casimir interaction between a suspended graphene layer and a parallel conducting surface. We find that at high temperature the Casimir interaction in such system is just one half of that for two ideal conductors separated by the same distance. In this limit single graphene layer behaves exactly as a Drude metal. In particular, the contribution of the TE mode is suppressed, while one of the TM mode saturates the ideal metal value. Behaviour of the Casimir interaction for intermediate temperatures and separations accessible for an experiment is studied in some detail. We also find an interesting interplay between two fundamental constants of graphene physics: the fine structure constant and the Fermi velocity.

Heat Trace Asymptotics on Noncommutative Spaces

This is a mini-review of the heat kernel expansion for generalized Laplacians on various noncommutative spaces. Applications to the spectral action principle, renormalization of noncommutative theories and anomalies are also considered.

Heat kernel, effective action and anomalies in noncommutative theories

Being motivated by physical applications (as the phi^4 model) we calculate the heat kernel coefficients for generalised Laplacians on the Moyal plane containing both left and right multiplications. We found both star-local and star-nonlocal terms. By using these results we calculate the large mass and strong noncommutativity expansion of the effective action and of the vacuum energy. We also study the axial anomaly in the models with gauge fields acting on fermions from the left and from the right.

Canonical analysis of space-time noncommutative theories and gauge symmetries

We construct a modification of the Poisson bracket which is suitable for a canonical analysis of space-time noncommutative field theories. We show that this bracket satisfies the Jacobi identities and generates equations of motion. In this modified canonical formalism one can define the notion of the first-class constraints, demonstrate that they generate gauge symmetries, and derive an explicit form of these symmetry transformations.

Spectral problems from quantum field theory

We describe how spectral functions of differential operators appear in the quantum field theory context. We formulate consistency conditions which should be satisfied by the operators and by the boundary conditions. We review some modern developments in quantum field theory and strings and show which new spectral and boundary value problems arise.

On gauge-independence in quantum gravity

We prove gauge-independence of one-loop path integral for on-shell quantum gravity obtained in a framework of modified geometric approach. We use projector on pure gauge directions constructed via quadratic form of the action. This enables us to formulate the proof entirely in terms of determinants of non-degenerate elliptic operators without reference to any renormalization procedure. The role of the conformal factor rotation in achieving gauge-independence is discussed. Direct computations on $CP^2$ in a general three-parameter background gauge are presented. We comment on gauge dependence of previous results by Ichinose.

On Gauge-Invariant Boundary Conditions for 2d Gravity with Dynamical torsion

In the example of $R^2+T^2$ gravity on the unit two dimensional disk we demonstrate that in the presence of an independent spin connection it is possible to define local gauge invariant boundary conditions even on boundaries which are not totally geodesic. One-loop partition function and the corresponding heat kernel are calculated.

Heat kernel for antisymmetric tensor field on a disk

We suggest a method of reduction of mixed absolute and relative boundary conditions to pure ones. The case of rank two tensor is studied in detail. For four-dimensional disk the corresponding heat kernel is expressed in terms of scalar heat kernels. The result for scaling behavior $ζ(0)$ agrees with previous calculations.

QED on Curved Background and on Manifolds with Boundaries: Unitarity versus Covariance

Some recent results show that the covariant path integral and the integral over physical degrees of freedom give contradicting results on curved background and on manifolds with boundaries. This looks like a conflict between unitarity and covariance. We argue that this effect is due to the use of non-covariant measure on the space of physical degrees of freedom. Starting with the reduced phase space path integral and using covariant measure throughout computations we recover standard path integral in the Lorentz gauge and the Moss and Poletti BRST-invariant boundary conditions. We also demonstrate by direct calculations that in the approach based on Gaussian path integral on the space of physical degrees of freedom some basic symmetries are broken.
