Nonlinearity-induced chirality in resonant metasurfaces

Chiral metasurfaces conventionally rely on structural or extrinsic symmetry breaking, while nonlinear circular dichroism is usually treated as a resonantly enhanced consequence of an already chiral linear response. Here, we show that chirality can instead be induced by the nonlinear susceptibility of an otherwise achiral resonant metasurface. We study a membrane metasurface composed of circular holes in a square lattice made of a cubic nonlinear material such as crystalline silicon. Under normal incidence, the structure is linearly achiral and supports high-Q quasi-guided resonances exhibiting identical responses to left- and right-circularly polarized light. Using quasi-normal-mode expansion and temporal coupled-mode theory extended to the nonlinear regime, we demonstrate that a relative rotation between the principal axes of the cubic nonlinear susceptibility tensor and the metasurface axes produces unequal third-harmonic generation for opposite circular polarizations. We formulate the resulting effect of nonlinear circular dichroism without geometrical chirality in terms of helicity phase-matching criteria and discuss why such a mechanism is forbidden for second-harmonic generation in materials with second-order nonlinearity. The resulting nonlinear circular dichroism reaches 99.5% and follows a simple dependence on the relative angle, switching from fourfold to eightfold periodicity when resonances at the harmonic frequency are additionally excited. Our results establish nonlinearity-induced chirality as a fundamentally new route to chiral photonic responses without geometrical symmetry breaking, opening opportunities for nonlinear chiral optics in planar CMOS-compatible metasurfaces.

Enhancing Volumetric Optical Chirality through 2D-3D Structural Design Evolution

Circular dichroism (CD) sensing plays a pivotal role in probing molecular chirality in biomedical sciences. However, engineering superchiral electromagnetic fields that can reliably amplify the faint signatures of chiral analytes remains profoundly challenging. Central to this difficulty is the need to balance two competing demands: maximizing the enhancement of chiral fields while maintaining a sufficiently large interaction volume for effective molecular interrogation. Here, we introduce a figure of merit (FOM) that captures the enhancement and spatial coverage of superchiral fields to benchmark different chiral-field configurations. We examine the effects of helix-geometry evolution on the FOM, including 2D to 3D chirality induction, winding-number escalation, helical-order enhancement, and transverse dilation. By tuning these structural degrees of freedom, the sensing volume can be enlarged without compromising the distribution and enhancement strength of fields. The optimized triple-strand helix markedly enhanced the analyte CD signal, yielding a FOM of 2.43*10^10 nm3, which surpassed prior 2D and 3D configurations by over an order of magnitude. The proposed FOM exhibits a strong linear correlation (R^2 = 0.9256) with the analyte CD signal. Our findings provide a systematic design framework for 3D chiral structures and a robust metric for assessing their chiroptical sensing performance, particularly in scenarios involving clusters of randomly oriented small molecules or a large chiral molecule.

Light-cone-proximal quasi-BICs for chiral lasing at grazing angles

Chiral quasi-bound states in the continuum (q-BICs) have recently emerged in metaphotonics as resonances that combine ultrahigh quality factors with near-unity circular polarization. However, these states are typically confined to the Gamma-point (normal incidence) due to their symmetry-protected origins. We propose a new mechanism for realizing light-cone-proximal chiral q-BICs at large oblique angles, enabled by the divergence of the radiative local density of states near the light cone. Using dielectric metasurfaces with a monoclinic lattice and broken in-plane mirror symmetry, we demonstrate that tuning the lattice angle allows for robust control of these resonances. The resulting chiral q-BICs exhibit near-unity circular dichroism in transmission and fully circularly polarized emission at angles exceeding 50 degrees from normal. This approach paves the way for directional chiral lasing at grazing angles and for photonic devices operating efficiently in off-normal geometries.

Enabling all-to-circular polarization upconversion by nonlinear chiral metasurfaces with rotational symmetry

We implement a stacking strategy in designing chiral metasurfaces with high rotational symmetry, enabling quasi-bound-in-the-continuum (quasi-BIC) resonances characterized by absolute chirality. The rotational symmetry allows a circularly polarized pump to be converted into a circularly polarized nonlinear signal. Meanwhile, our bilayered metasurface can be engineered to respond solely to one selected circular polarization. Consequently, integrating resonant chiral response and rotational symmetry endows a unique category of metasurfaces to upconvert any linear or unpolarized pump into a circularly polarized nonlinear signal. Our results reveal that when such a metasurface is subjected to a linearly polarized pump, the intensity ratio of the resultant circularly polarized signals varies with the order of the nonlinear process. Counterintuitively, this ratio scales as the fourth power of the local field enhancement in the second harmonic process and the second power in the third harmonic process. Our work offers a comprehensive theoretical description of the nonlinear processes in chiral structures with rotation and provides universal guidelines for designing nonlinear all-dielectric metasurfaces with a strong chiral response.

Unidirectional Chiral Emission via Twisted Bi-layer Metasurfaces

Controlling and channelling light emissions from unpolarized quantum dots into specific directions with chiral polarization remains a key challenge in modern photonics. Stacked metasurface designs offer a potential compact solution for chirality and directionality engineering. However, experimental observations of directional chiral radiation from resonant metasurfaces with quantum emitters remain obscure. In this paper, we present experimental observations of unidirectional chiral emission from a twisted bi-layer metasurface via multi-dimensional control, including twist angle, interlayer distance, and lateral displacement between the top and bottom layers, as enabled by doublet alignment lithography (DAL). First, maintaining alignment, the metasurface demonstrates a resonant intrinsic optical chirality with near-unity circular dichroism of 0.94 and reflectance difference of 74%, where a high circular dichroism greater than 0.9 persists across a wide range of angles from -11 to 11 degrees. Second, engineered lateral displacement induces a unidirectional chiral resonance, resulting in unidirectional chiral emission from the quantum dots deposited onto the metasurface. Our bi-layer metasurfaces offer a universal compact platform for efficient radiation manipulation over a wide angular range, promising potential applications in miniaturized lasers, grating couplers, and chiral nanoantennas.

Resonant mode approximation of the scattering matrix of photonic crystal slabs near several Wood-Rayleigh anomalies

The resonant mode approximation of the scattering matrix is considered for calculating the optical properties of multilayered periodic structures within the formalism of the Fourier-modal method for two diffraction thresholds in close proximity of the spectral-angular range of interest. The developed approximation opens up possibilities for the fast calculation of the scattering matrix of these structures when describing the integral characteristics of spectra and dispersion curves containing high-Q resonances, such as bound states in the continuum.
