Unlocking the O-Band: high-power, broadband soliton microcomb

The O-band (1260-1360 nm), located near the minimum of chromatic dispersion of standard single-mode fiber, is the transmission window of major interest and importance for short-reach data-center interconnects. However, full capacity offered by this spectral band is yet to be unlocked, due to limited availability of scalable multi-wavelength, high-power, low noise O-band light engines. While Kerr microcombs in CMOS-compatible silicon nitride resonators provide mutually coherent wavelength channels with precise spacing and chip-scale footprints, their practical deployment in the O-band has been hindered by limited pump laser power, insufficient per-line power and the lack of flat, wideband amplification technologies to uniformly boost multiple coherent carriers. Here we demonstrate a high-power O-band soliton microcomb architecture that overcomes this bottleneck by combining self-injection-locked (SIL) operation in a Silicon Nitride microring with a single-stage bismuth-doped phosphosilicate fiber amplifier designed for wideband, flat-top gain. The SIL microcomb operates with an 834 GHz free spectral range and spans over 1050-1650 nm. The amplifier simultaneously boosts 21 O-band lines across 100 nm to powers exceeding 0 dBm per carrier without gain flattening or external equalization, while preserving low-noise characteristics. We validate each amplified microcomb line as a carrier across the entire O-band using dual-polarization 32 GBaud 64-QAM coherent transmission. This approach establishes a practical route towards high-power, broadband O-band microcomb engines for next-generation data-center interconnects and scalable photonic systems.

Nonlinear synchronization through vector subharmonic entrainment

Synchronization is ubiquitous across a wide range of fields. Subharmonic entrainment (SHE) is a nonlinear synchronization phenomenon that results in a locking oscillator at a frequency of an external periodic forcing signal with a fraction of the oscillator frequency. Beyond the fundamentals of nonlinear dynamics, SHE has a range of practical applications from stabilizing ultrafast laser pulses to optimizing control in various engineering and natural systems. However, the vectorial nature of SHE remains elusive. Here, we present the results of a theoretical and experimental study of a vector type of subharmonic entrainment (VSHE) using a passively mode-locked fiber laser as a testbed. We unveil the mechanism of vectorial SHE, in which weak external signals can entrain internal laser dynamics through vectorial coupling. Vectorial SHE presents in the form of synchronization between the subharmonic of mode-locking-driven oscillations and continuous wave (CW) signal through an evolving state of polarization. This CW signal, driven by the internal dynamics of the injected signal, causes VSHE with the frequencies ratios of multiples of ten, resulting in a partially mode-locking regime operation. Our findings offer new control techniques over mode-locking and additional dimension such as polarization states.

Optical neuromorphic computing via temporal up-sampling and trainable encoding on a telecom device platform

Mapping input signals to a high-dimensional space is a critical concept in various neuromorphic computing paradigms, including models such as Reservoir Computing (RC) and Extreme Learning Machines (ELM). We propose using commercially available telecom devices and technologies developed for high-speed optical data transmission to implement these models through nonlinear mapping of optical signals into a high-dimensional space where linear processing can be applied. We manipulate the output feature dimension by applying temporal up-sampling (at the speed of commercially available telecom devices) of input signals and a well-established wave-division-multiplexing (WDM). Our up-sampling approach utilizes a trainable encoding mask, where each input symbol is replaced with a structured sequence of masked symbols, effectively increasing the representational capacity of the feature space. This gives remarkable flexibility in the dynamical phase masking of the input signal. We demonstrate this approach in the context of RC and ELM, employing readily available photonic devices, including a semiconductor optical amplifier and nonlinear Mach-Zender interferometer (MZI). We investigate how nonlinear mapping provided by these devices can be characterized in terms of the increased controlled separability and predictability of the output state.

Improving Analog Neural Network Robustness: A Noise-Agnostic Approach with Explainable Regularizations

This work tackles the critical challenge of mitigating "hardware noise" in deep analog neural networks, a major obstacle in advancing analog signal processing devices. We propose a comprehensive, hardware-agnostic solution to address both correlated and uncorrelated noise affecting the activation layers of deep neural models. The novelty of our approach lies in its ability to demystify the "black box" nature of noise-resilient networks by revealing the underlying mechanisms that reduce sensitivity to noise. In doing so, we introduce a new explainable regularization framework that harnesses these mechanisms to significantly enhance noise robustness in deep neural architectures.

Vector Soliton Breathing Dynamics

Mode-locked lasers play the role of the ideal testbeds for studying self-coherent structures, dissipative solitons, with stable spatiotemporal profiles supported by the balance between dispersion and nonlinearity. However, under some conditions, the profile and energy of the solitons can oscillate (breath) periodically. Unlike the previous studies of different scalar mechanisms of breathers emergence, we demonstrate experimentally and theoretically a new vector mechanism where breathing of the output power is a result of the heteroclinic dynamics. The heteroclinic orbit is a trajectory periodically evolving nearby the neighborhood of one of the orthogonal states of polarization with further switching to and evolving nearby the other state of polarization. The dwelling time for the trajectory near each orthogonal state is determined by the cavity anisotropy adjustable with the help of the polarization controller for the pump wave. The obtained results on tunability of breathing dynamics enables unlocking novel techniques of the flexible control and manipulation of the polarization dynamics of dissipative solitons.

Polarization dynamics, stability and tunability of a dual-comb polarization-multiplexing ring-cavity fiber laser

In this paper, we demonstrate the polarization-multiplexed system capable of generating two stable optical frequency combs with tunable frequency differences and a large extinction ratio. Also, the polarization dynamics of a dual-frequency comb generated from a single mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser are experimentally studied. The obtained results will extend the application to areas such as polarization spectroscopy and dual-comb-based polarimetry.
