Fubini theorem in noncommutative geometry

We discuss the Fubini formula in Alain Connes' noncommutative geometry. We present a sufficient condition on spectral triples for which a Fubini formula holds true. The condition is natural and related to heat semigroup asymptotics. We provide examples of spectral triples for which the Fubini formula fails.

Trace Formulas for a Class of non-Fredholm Operators: A Review

We review previous work on spectral flow in connection with certain self-adjoint model operators $\{A(t)\}_{t\in \mathbb{R}}$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, joining endpoints $A_\pm$, and the index of the operator $D_{A}^{}= (d/d t) + A$ acting in $L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathcal{H})$, where $A$ denotes the operator of multiplication $(A f)(t) = A(t)f(t)$. In this article we review what is known when these operators have some essential spectrum and describe some new results in terms of associated spectral shift functions. We are especially interested in extensions to non-Fredholm situations, replacing the Fredholm index by the Witten index, and use a particular $(1+1)$-dimensional model setup to illustrate our approach based on spectral shift functions.

$Φ$-moment inequalities for independent and freely independent random variables

This paper is devoted to the study of $Φ$-moments of sums of independent/freely independent random variables. More precisely, let $(f_k)_{k=1}^n$ be a sequence of positive (symmetrically distributed) independent random variables and let $Φ$ be an Orlicz function with $Δ_2$-condition. We provide an equivalent expression for the quantity $\mathbb{E}(Φ(\sum_{k=1}^n f_k))$ in term of the sum of disjoint copies of the sequence $(f_k)_{k=1}^n.$ We also prove an analogous result in the setting of free probability. Furthermore, we provide an equivalent characterization of $τ(Φ(\sup^+_{1\leq k\leq n}x_k))$ for positive freely independent random variables and also present some new results on free Johnson-Schechtman inequalities in the quasi-Banach symmetric operator space.

An upper triangular decomposition theorem for some unbounded operators affiliated to II_1-factors

Results of Haagerup and Schultz (2009) about existence of invariant subspaces that decompose the Brown measure are extended to a large class of unbounded operators affiliated to a tracial von Neumann algebra. These subspaces are used to decompose an arbitrary operator in this class into the sum of a normal operator and a spectrally negligible operator. This latter result is used to prove that, on a bimodule over a tracial von Neumann algebra that is closed with respect to logarithmic submajorization, every trace is spectral, in the sense that the trace value on an operator depends only on the Brown measure of the operator.

Algebras of log-integrable functions and operators

We show that certain spaces of log-integrable functions and operators are complete topological *-algebras with respect to a natural metric space structure. We explore connections with the Nevanlinna class of holomorphic functions.

On reduction theory and Brown measure for closed unbounded operators

The theory of direct integral decompositions of both bounded and unbounded operators is further developed; in particular, results about spectral projections, functional calculus and affiliation to von Neumann algebras are proved. For operators belonging to or affiliated to a tracial von Neumann algebra that is a direct integral von Neumann algebra, the Brown measure is shown to be given by the corresponding integral of Brown measures.

Catalysis in the trace class and weak trace class ideals

Given operators $A,B$ in some ideal $\mathcal{I}$ in the algebra $\mathcal{L}(H)$ of all bounded operators on a separable Hilbert space $H$, can we give conditions guaranteeing the existence of a trace-class operator $C$ such that $B \otimes C$ is submajorized (in the sense of Hardy--Littlewood) by $A \otimes C$ ? In the case when $\mathcal{I} = \mathcal{L}_1$, a necessary and almost sufficient condition is that the inequalities ${\rm Tr} (B^p) \leq {\rm Tr} (A^p)$ hold for every $p \in [1,\infty]$. We show that the analogous statement fails for $\mathcal{I} = \mathcal{L}_{1,\infty}$ by connecting it with the study of Dixmier traces.

Weak type commutator and Lipschitz estimates: resolution of the Nazarov-Peller conjecture

Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a semi-finite von Neumann algebra and let $f: \mathbb{R} \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ be a Lipschitz function. If $A,B\in\mathcal{M}$ are self-adjoint operators such that $[A,B]\in L_1(\mathcal{M}),$ then $$\|[f(A),B]\|_{1,\infty}\leq c_{abs}\|f'\|_{\infty}\|[A,B]\|_1,$$ where $c_{abs}$ is an absolute constant independent of $f$, $\mathcal{M}$ and $A,B$ and $\|\cdot\|_{1,\infty}$ denotes the weak $L_1$-norm. If $X,Y\in\mathcal{M}$ are self-adjoint operators such that $X-Y\in L_1(\mathcal{M}),$ then $$\|f(X)-f(Y)\|_{1,\infty}\leq c_{abs}\|f'\|_{\infty}\|X-Y\|_1.$$ This result resolves a conjecture raised by F. Nazarov and V. Peller implying a couple of existing results in perturbation theory.

On the distinction between the classes of Dixmier and Connes-Dixmier traces

In the present paper we prove that the classes of Dixmier and Connes-Dixmier traces differ even on the Dixmier ideal $\mathcal M_{1,\infty}$. We construct a Marcinkiewicz space $\mathcal M_ψ$ and a positive operator $T\in \mathcal M_ψ$ which is Connes-Dixmier measurable but which is not Dixmier measurable.

Dixmier traces generated by exponentiation invariant generalised limits

We define a new class of singular positive traces on the ideal $\mathcal M_{1,\infty}$ of $B(H)$ generated by exponentiation invariant generalized limits. We prove that this new class is strictly contained in the class of all Dixmier traces. We also prove a Lidskii-type formula for this class of traces.
