Writing Skyrmions with a Magnetic Dipole

We demonstrate numerically on large spin lattices that one can write skyrmions in a thin magnetic film with a magnetic dipole of a few tens of nanometer in size. Nucleation of non-chiral skyrmions as well as chiral skyrmions formed by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction has been investigated. Analytical model is developed that agrees with numerical results. It is shown that skyrmions can be written though a number of scenarios that depend on the experimental technique and parameters of the system. In one scenario, that branches into subscenarios of different topology, the magnetic dipole on approaching the film creates a skyrmion-antiskyrmion pair. As the dipole moves closer to the film it induces collapse of the antiskyrmion and creation of a non-zero topological charge due to the remaining skyrmion. In a different scenario the dipole moving parallel to the film nucleates a skyrmion at the boundary and then drags it inside the film. Possible implementations of these methods for writing topologically protected information in a magnetic film are discussed.

Quantum Collapse of a Magnetic Skyrmion

Quantum collapse of a small skyrmion in a thin magnetic film with Dzyalishinskii-Moriya (DMI) interaction has been studied. The energy of the skyrmion and the stability threshold determined by the DMI, the external magnetic field, and the underlying atomic lattice are investigated analytically and numerically. The Lagrangian describing the coupled dynamics of the skyrmion size and the chirality angle is derived. Equations of motion possess an instanton solution that corresponds to the skyrmion underbarrier contraction via quantum tunneling with subsequent collapse and decay of the topological charge. The tunneling rate is computed and the conditions needed to observe quantum collapse of a skyrmion in a magnetic film are discussed.

Scaling of Coercivity in a 3d Random Anisotropy Model

The random-anisotropy Heisenberg model is numerically studied on lattices containing over ten million spins. The study is focused on hysteresis and metastability due to topological defects, and is relevant to magnetic properties of amorphous and sintered magnets. We are interested in the limit when ferromagnetic correlations extend beyond the size of the grain inside which the magnetic anisotropy axes are correlated. In that limit the coercive field computed numerically roughly scales as the fourth power of the random anisotropy strength and as the sixth power of the grain size. Theoretical arguments are presented that provide an explanation of numerical results. Our findings should be helpful for designing amorphous and nanosintered materials with desired magnetic properties.

Random Fields, Topology, and The Imry-Ma Argument

We consider $n$-component fixed-length order parameter interacting with a weak random field in $d=1,2,3$ dimensions. Relaxation from the initially ordered state and spin-spin correlation functions have been studied on lattices containing hundreds of millions sites. At $n-1 d$, when topological objects are absent, the final, lowest-energy, state is independent of the initial condition. It is characterized by the exponential decay of correlations that agrees quantitatively with the theory based upon the Imry-Ma argument. In the borderline case of $n-1=d$, when topological structures are non-singular, the system possesses a weak metastability with the Imry-Ma state likely to be the global energy minimum.

Landau-Zener dynamics of a nanoresonator containing a tunneling spin

We study the Landau-Zener dynamics of a tunneling spin coupled to a torsional resonator. For strong spin-phonon coupling, when the oscillator frequency is large compared to the tunnel splitting, the system exhibits multiple Landau-Zener transitions. Entanglement of spin and mechanical angular momentum results in abrupt changes of oscillator dynamics which coincide in time with spin transitions. We show that a large number of spins on a single oscillator coupled only through the in-phase phonon field behaves as a single large spin, greatly enhancing the spin-phonon coupling. We compare purely quantum and semiclassical dynamics of the system and discuss their experimental realizations. An experiment is proposed in which the field sweep is used to read out the exact quantum state of the mechanical resonator.

Single magnetic molecule between conducting leads: Effect of mechanical rotations

We study spin-rotation effects in a magnetic molecule bridged between two conducting leads. Dynamics of the total angular momentum couples spin tunneling to the mechanical rotations. Landau-Zener spin transition produced by the time-dependent magnetic field generates a unique pattern of mechanical oscillations that can be detected by measuring the electronic tunneling current through the molecule.
