Experimental determination of the magnetic interactions of frustrated Cairo pentagon lattice materials

We present inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the Cairo pentagon lattice magnets Bi$_2$Fe$_4$O$_9$ and Bi$_4$Fe$_5$O$_{13}$F, supported by high field magnetisation measurements of Bi$_2$Fe$_4$O$_9$. Using linear spin wave theory and mean field analyses we determine the spin exchange interactions and single-ion anisotropy in these materials. The Cairo lattice is geometrically frustrated and consists of two inequivalent magnetic sites, both occupied by Fe$^{3+}$ ions and connected by two competing nearest neighbour interactions. We found that one of these interactions, coupling nearest neighbour spins on the three-fold symmetric sites, is extremely strong and antiferromagnetic. These strongly coupled dimers are then weakly coupled to a framework formed from spins occupying the other inequivalent site. In addition we found that the Fe$^{3+}$ $S=5/2$ spins have a non-negligible single-ion anisotropy, which manifests as a spin anisotropy gap in the neutron spectrum and a spin-flop transition in high field magnetisation measurements.

Cubic lead perovskite PbMoO3 with anomalous metallic behavior

A previously unreported Pb-based perovskite PbMoO$_3$ is obtained by high-pressure and high-temperature synthesis. This material crystallizes in the $Pm\bar{3}m$ cubic structure at room temperature, making it distinct from typical Pb-based perovskite oxides with a structural distortion. PbMoO$_3$ exhibits a metallic behavior down to 0.1 K with an unusual $T$-sub linear dependence of the electrical resistivity. Moreover, a large specific heat is observed at low temperatures accompanied by a peak in $C_P/T^3$ around 10 K, in marked contrast to the isostructural metallic system SrMoO$_3$. These transport and thermal properties for PbMoO$_3$, taking into account anomalously large Pb atomic displacements detected through diffraction experiments, are attributed to a low-energy vibrational mode, associated with incoherent off-centering of lone pair Pb$^{2+}$ cations. We discuss the unusual behavior of the electrical resistivity in terms of a polaron-like conduction, mediated by the strong coupling between conduction electrons and optical phonons of the local low-energy vibrational mode.

Collinear order and chirality-reorientation transition in the Cairo pentagonal magnet Bi$_4$Fe$_5$O$_{13}$F

We show that interlayer spins play a dual role in the Cairo pentagonal magnet Bi$_4$Fe$_5$O$_{13}$F, on one hand mediating the three-dimensional (3D) magnetic order and on the other driving spin-reorientation transitions both within and between the planes. The corresponding sequence of magnetic orders unraveled by neutron diffraction and M\"ossbauer spectroscopy features two orthogonal magnetic structures described by opposite local vector chiralities, and an intermediate, partly disordered phase with nearly collinear spins. A similar collinear phase has been predicted theoretically to be stabilized by quantum fluctuations, but Bi$_4$Fe$_5$O$_{13}$F is very far from the relevant parameter regime. While the observed in-plane reorientation cannot be explained by any standard frustration mechanism, our ab initio band-structure calculations reveal strong single-ion anisotropy of the interlayer Fe$^{3+}$ spins that turns out to be instrumental in controlling the local vector chirality and the associated interlayer order.

Discovery of a superhard iron tetraboride superconductor

Single crystals of novel orthorhombic (space group Pnnm) iron tetraboride FeB4 were synthesised at pressures above 8 GPa and high temperatures. Magnetic susceptibility measurements demonstrated bulk superconductivity below 2.9 K. The putative isotope effect on the superconducting critical temperature indicates that FeB4 is likely a phonon-mediated superconductor, which is unexpected in the light of previous knowledge on Fe-based superconductors. The discovered iron tetraboride is highly incompressible and has the nanoindentation hardness of 65(5) GPa, thus, it opens a new class of highly desirable materials combining advanced mechanical properties and superconductivity.

Frustrated pentagonal Cairo lattice in the non-collinear antiferromagnet Bi4Fe5O13F

The crystal and magnetic structures and underlying magnetic interactions of Bi4Fe5O13F, a model system for studying the physics of the Cairo pentagonal spin lattice, are investigated by transmission electron microscopy, low-temperature synchrotron x-ray and neutron powder diffraction, thermodynamic measurements, and density functional band-structure calculations. The crystal structure of Bi4Fe5O13F contains infinite rutile-like chains of edge-sharing FeO6 octahedra interconnected by the Fe2O7 groups of two corner-sharing FeO4 tetrahedra. The cavities between the chains are filled with the fluorine-centered Bi4F tetrahedra. The Fe3+ cations form pentagonal units that give rise to an unusual topology of frustrated exchange couplings and underlie a sequence of the magnetic transitions at T1= 62 K, T2 = 71 K, and TN = 178 K. Below T1, Bi4Fe5O13F forms a fully ordered non-collinear antiferromagnetic structure, whereas the magnetic state between T1 and TN may be partially disordered according to the sizable increase in the magnetic entropy at T1 and T2. Therefore, Bi4Fe5O13F shows the evidence of intricate magnetic transitions that were never anticipated for the pentagonal Cairo spin lattice. Additionally, it manifests a sillimanite (Al2SiO5)-based homologous series of compounds that feature the pentagonal magnetic lattice spaced by a variable number of octahedral units along the rutile-type chains.
