Bifurcation of nonlinear bound states in the periodic Gross-Pitaevskii equation with PT-symmetry

The stationary Gross-Pitaevskii equation in one dimension is considered with a complex periodic potential satisfying the conditions of the PT (parity-time reversal) symmetry. Under rather general assumptions on the potentials we prove bifurcations of PT-symmetric nonlinear bound states from the end points of a real interval in the spectrum of the non-selfadjoint linear Schrodinger operator with a complex PT-symmetric periodic potential. The nonlinear bound states are approximated by the effective amplitude equation, which bears the form of the cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation. In addition we provide sufficient conditions for the appearance of complex spectral bands when the complex $\PT$-symmetric potential has an asymptotically small imaginary part.

Nonexistence of self-similar blowup for the nonlinear Dirac equations in (1+1) dimensions

We address a general system of nonlinear Dirac equations in (1+1) dimensions and prove nonexistence of classical self-similar blowup solutions in the space of bounded functions. While this argument does not exclude the possibility of finite-time blowup, it still suggests that smooth solutions to the nonlinear Dirac equations in (1+1) dimensions do not develop self-similar singularities in a finite time. In the particular case of the cubic Dirac equations, we characterize (unbounded) self-similar solutions in the closed analytical form.

Integrable semi-discretization of the massive Thirring system in laboratory coordinates

Several integrable semi-discretizations are known in the literature for the massive Thirring system in characteristic coordinates. We present for the first time an integrable semi-discretization of the massive Thirring system in laboratory coordinates. Our approach relies on the relation between the continuous massive Thirring system and the Ablowitz-Ladik lattice. The Backlund transformation for solutions to the Ablowitz-Ladik lattice and the time evolution of the massive Thirring system in laboratory coordinates are combined together in the derivation of the Lax system for the integrable semi-discretization of the massive Thirring system.

Inverse scattering for the massive Thirring model

We consider the massive Thirring model in the laboratory coordinates and explain how the inverse scattering transform can be developed with the Riemann-Hilbert approach. The key ingredient of our method is to transform the corresponding spectral problem to the equivalent forms: one is suitable for the spectral parameter at the origin and the other one is suitable for the spectral parameter at infinity. Global solutions to the massive Thirring model are recovered from the reconstruction formulae at the origin and at infinity.

Helical solitons in vector modified Korteweg-de Vries equations

We study existence of helical solitons in the vector modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equations, one of which is integrable, whereas another one is non-integrable. The latter one describes nonlinear waves in various physical systems, including plasma and chains of particles connected by elastic springs. By using the dynamical system methods such as the blow-up near singular points and the construction of invariant manifolds, we construct helical solitons by the efficient shooting method. The helical solitons arise as the result of co-dimension one bifurcation and exist along a curve in the velocity-frequency parameter plane. Examples of helical solitons are constructed numerically for the non-integrable equation and compared with exact solutions in the integrable vector mKdV equation. The stability of helical solitons with respect to small perturbations is confirmed by direct numerical simulations.

Convergence of Petviashvili's method near periodic waves in the fractional Korteweg-de Vries equation

Petviashvili's method has been successfully used for approximating of solitary waves in nonlinear evolution equations. It was discovered empirically that the method may fail for approximating of periodic waves. We consider the case study of the fractional Korteweg-de Vries equation and explain divergence of Petviashvili's method from unstable eigenvalues of the generalized eigenvalue problem. We also show that a simple modification of the iterative method after the mean value shift results in the unconditional convergence of Petviashvili's method. The results are illustrated numerically for the classical Korteweg-de Vries and Benjamin-Ono equations.

Periodic travelling waves of the modified KdV equation and rogue waves on the periodic background

We address the most general periodic travelling wave of the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation written as a rational function of Jacobian elliptic functions. By applying an algebraic method which relates the periodic travelling waves and the squared periodic eigenfunctions of the Lax operators, we characterize explicitly the location of eigenvalues in the periodic spectral problem away from the imaginary axis. We show that Darboux transformations with the periodic eigenfunctions remain in the class of the same periodic travelling waves of the mKdV equation. In a general setting, there are exactly three symmetric pairs of eigenvalues away from the imaginary axis, and we give a new representation of the second non-periodic solution to the Lax equations for the same eigenvalues. We show that Darboux transformations with the non-periodic solutions to the Lax equations produce rogue waves on the periodic background, which are either brought from infinity by propagating algebraic solitons or formed in a finite region of the time-space plane.

On the impossibility of solitary Rossby waves in meridionally unbounded domains

Evolution of weakly nonlinear and slowly varying Rossby waves in planetary atmospheres and oceans is considered within the quasi-geostrophic equation on unbounded domains. When the mean flow profile has a jump in the ambient potential vorticity, localized eigenmodes are trapped by the mean flow with a non-resonant speed of propagation. We address amplitude equations for these modes. Whereas the linear problem is suggestive of a two-dimensional Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation, we found that the dynamics of Rossby waves is effectively linear and moreover confined to zonal waveguides of the mean flow. This eliminates even the ubiquitous Korteweg-de Vries equations as underlying models for spatially localized coherent structures in these geophysical flows.

Krein signature for instability of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric states

Krein quantity is introduced for isolated neutrally stable eigenvalues associated with the stationary states in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Krein quantity is real and nonzero for simple eigenvalues but it vanishes if two simple eigenvalues coalesce into a defective eigenvalue. A necessary condition for bifurcation of unstable eigenvalues from the defective eigenvalue is proved. This condition requires the two simple eigenvalues before the coalescence point to have opposite Krein signatures. The theory is illustrated with several numerical examples motivated by recent publications in physics literature.

Rogue periodic waves of the focusing NLS equation

Rogue waves on the periodic background are considered for the nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation in the focusing case. The two periodic wave solutions are expressed by the Jacobian elliptic functions dn and cn. Both periodic waves are modulationally unstable with respect to long-wave perturbations. Exact solutions for the rogue waves on the periodic background are constructed by using the explicit expressions for the periodic eigenfunctions of the Zakharov-Shabat spectral problem and the Darboux transformations. These exact solutions labeled as rogue periodic waves generalize the classical rogue wave (the so-called Peregrine's breather). The magnification factor of the rogue periodic waves is computed as a function of the wave amplitude (the elliptic modulus). Rogue periodic waves constructed here are compared with the rogue wave patterns obtained numerically in recent publications.

Spectral stability of shifted states on star graphs

We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with the subcritical power nonlinearity on a star graph consisting of $N$ edges and a single vertex under generalized Kirchhoff boundary conditions. The stationary NLS equation may admit a family of solitary waves parameterized by a translational parameter, which we call the shifted states. The two main examples include (i) the star graph with even $N$ under the classical Kirchhoff boundary conditions and (ii) the star graph with one incoming edge and $N-1$ outgoing edges under a single constraint on coefficients of the generalized Kirchhoff boundary conditions. We obtain the general counting results on the Morse index of the shifted states and apply them to the two examples. In the case of (i), we prove that the shifted states with even $N \geq 4$ are saddle points of the action functional which are spectrally unstable under the NLS flow. In the case of (ii), we prove that the shifted states with the monotone profiles in the $N-1$ outgoing edges are spectrally stable, whereas the shifted states with non-monotone profiles in the $N-1$ outgoing edges are spectrally unstable, the two families intersect at the half-soliton states which are spectrally stable but nonlinearly unstable. Since the NLS equation on a star graph with shifted states can be reduced to the homogeneous NLS equation on a line, the spectral instability of shifted states is due to the perturbations breaking this reduction. We give a simple argument suggesting that the spectrally stable shifted states are nonlinear unstable under the NLS flow due to the perturbations breaking the reduction to the NLS equation on a line.

Ground state on the dumbbell graph

We consider standing waves in the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation on a dumbbell graph (two rings attached to a central line segment subject to the Kirchhoff boundary conditions at the junctions). In the limit of small $L^2$ norm, the ground state (the orbitally stable standing wave of the smallest energy at a fixed $L^2$ norm) is represented by a constant solution. However, when the $L^2$ norm is increased, this constant solution undertakes two bifurcations, where the first is the pitchfork (symmetry breaking) bifurcation and the second one is the symmetry preserving bifurcation. As a result of the first symmetry breaking bifurcation, the standing wave becomes more localized in one of the two rings. As a result of the second symmetry preserving bifurcation, the standing wave becomes localized in the central line segment. In the limit of large norm solutions, both standing waves are represented by a truncated solitary wave localized in either the ring or the central line segment. Although the asymmetric wave supported in the ring is a ground state near the symmetry breaking bifurcation of the constant solution, it is the symmetric wave supported in the central line segment which becomes the ground state in the limit of large $L^2$ norm. The analytical results are confirmed by numerical approximations of the ground state on the dumbbell graph.

Normal form for transverse instability of the line soliton with a nearly critical speed of propagation

There exists a critical speed of propagation of the line solitons in the Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation such that small transversely periodic perturbations are unstable for line solitons with larger-than-critical speeds and orbitally stable for those with smaller-than-critical speeds. The normal form for transverse instability of the line soliton with a nearly critical speed of propagation is derived by means of symplectic projections and near-identity transformations. Justification of this normal form is provided with the energy method. The normal form predicts a transformation of the unstable line solitons with larger-than-critical speeds to the orbitally stable transversely modulated solitary waves.

Rogue periodic waves of the mKdV equation

Traveling periodic waves of the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation are considered in the focusing case. By using one-fold and two-fold Darboux transformations, we construct explicitly the rogue periodic waves of the mKdV equation expressed by the Jacobian elliptic functions dn and cn respectively. The rogue dn-periodic wave describes propagation of an algebraically decaying soliton over the dn-periodic wave, the latter wave is modulationally stable with respect to long-wave perturbations. The rogue cn-periodic wave represents the outcome of the modulation instability of the cn-periodic wave with respect to long-wave perturbations and serves for the same purpose as the rogue wave of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS), where it is expressed by the rational function. We compute the magnification factor for the cn-periodic wave of the mKdV equation and show that it remains the same as in the small-amplitude NLS limit for all amplitudes. As a by-product of our work, we find explicit expressions for the periodic eigenfunctions of the AKNS spectral problem associated with the dn- and cn-periodic waves of the mKdV equation.

Orbital Stability of Domain Walls in Coupled Gross-Pitaevskii Systems

Domain walls are minimizers of energy for coupled one-dimensional Gross--Pitaevskii systems with nontrivial boundary conditions at infinity. It has been shown that these solutions are orbitally stable in the space of complex $\dot{H}^1$ functions with the same limits at infinity. In the present work we adopt a new weighted $H^1$ space to control perturbations of the domain walls and thus to obtain an improved orbital stability result. A major difficulty arises from the degeneracy of linearized operators at the domain walls and the lack of coercivity.

The derivative NLS equation: global existence with solitons

We extend the global existence result for the derivative NLS equation to the case when the initial datum includes a finite number of solitons. This is achieved by an application of the Bäcklund transformation that removes a finite number of zeros of the scattering coefficient. By means of this transformation, the Riemann--Hilbert problem for meromorphic functions can be formulated as the one for analytic functions, the solvability of which was obtained recently.

Bifurcations of self-similar solutions for reversing interfaces in the slow diffusion equation with strong absorption

Bifurcations of self-similar solutions for reversing interfaces are studied in the slow diffusion equation with strong absorption. The self-similar solutions bifurcate from the time-independent solutions for standing interfaces. We show that such bifurcations occur at the bifurcation points, at which the confluent hypergeometric functions satisfying Kummer's differential equation is truncated into a finite polynomial. A two-scale asymptotic method is employed to obtain the asymptotic dependencies of the self-similar reversing interfaces near the bifurcation points. The asymptotic results are shown to be in excellent agreement with numerical computations.

Nonlinear Instability of Half-Solitons on Star Graphs

We consider a half-soliton stationary state of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with the power nonlinearity on a star graph consisting of N edges and a single vertex. For the subcritical power nonlinearity, the half-soliton state is a degenerate critical point of the action functional under the mass constraint such that the second variation is nonnegative. By using normal forms, we prove that the degenerate critical point is a nonlinear saddle point, for which the small perturbations to the half-soliton state grow slowly in time resulting in the nonlinear instability of the half-soliton state. The result holds for any $N \geq 3$ and arbitrary subcritical power nonlinearity. It gives a precise dynamical characterization of the previous result of Adami {\em et al.}, where the half-soliton state was shown to be a saddle point of the action functional under the mass constraint for $N = 3$ and for cubic nonlinearity.
