On numerical modelling of contact lines in fluid flows

We study numerically a reduced model proposed by Benilov and Vynnycky (J. Fluid Mech. {\bf 718} (2013), 481), who examined the behavior of a contact line with a $180^{\circ}$ contact angle between liquid and a moving plate, in the context of a two-dimensional Couette flow. The model is given by a linear fourth-order advection-diffusion equation with an unknown velocity, which is to be determined dynamically from an additional boundary condition at the contact line. The main claim of Benilov and Vynnycky is that for any physically relevant initial condition, there is a finite positive time at which the velocity of the contact line tends to negative infinity, whereas the profile of the fluid flow remains regular. Additionally, it is claimed that the velocity behaves as the logarithmic function of time near the blow-up time. Compared to the previous computations based on COMSOL built-on algorithms, we use MATLAB software package and develop a direct finite-difference method to study dynamics of the reduced model under different initial conditions. We confirm the first claim but also show that the blow-up behavior is better approximated by a power function, compared with the logarithmic function. This numerical result suggests a simple explanation of the blow-up behavior of contact lines.

Hamiltonian systems with an infinite number of localized travelling waves

In many Hamiltonian systems, propagation of steadily travelling solitons or kinks is prohibited because of resonances with linear excitations. We show that Hamiltonian systems with resonances may admit an infinite number of travelling solitons or kinks if the closest to the real axis singularities in the complex upper half-plane of limiting asymptotic solution are of the form $z_\pm=\pmα+iβ$, $α\ne 0$. This quite a general statement is illustrated by examples of the fifth-order Korteweg--de Vries-type equation, the discrete cubic-quintic Klein--Gordon equation, and the nonlocal double sine--Gordon equations.

Stability of multi-solitons in the cubic NLS equation

We address stability of multi-solitons in the cubic NLS (nonlinear Schrödinger) equation on the line. By using the dressing transformation and the inverse scattering transform methods, we obtain the orbital stability of multi-solitons in the $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ space when the initial data is in a weighted $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ space.

Nonlinear dynamics in PT-symmetric lattices

We consider nonlinear dynamics in a finite parity-time-symmetric chain of the discrete nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (dNLS) type. We work in the range of the gain and loss coefficient when the zero equilibrium state is neutrally stable. We prove that the solutions of the dNLS equation do not blow up in a finite time and the trajectories starting with small initial data remain bounded for all times. Nevertheless, for arbitrary values of the gain and loss parameter, there exist trajectories starting with large initial data that grow exponentially fast for larger times with a rate that is rigorously identified. Numerical computations illustrate these analytical results for dimers and quadrimers.

Spectral stability of nonlinear waves in KdV-type evolution equations

This paper concerns spectral stability of nonlinear waves in KdV-type evolution equations. The relevant eigenvalue problem is defined by the composition of an unbounded self-adjoint operator with a finite number of negative eigenvalues and an unbounded non-invertible symplectic operator $\partial_x$. The instability index theorem is proven under a generic assumption on the self-adjoint operator both in the case of solitary waves and periodic waves. This result is reviewed in the context of other recent results on spectral stability of nonlinear waves in KdV-type evolution equations.

Orbital stability of Dirac solitons

We prove $H^1$ orbital stability of Dirac solitons in the integrable massive Thirring model by working with an additional conserved quantity which complements Hamiltonian, momentum and charge functionals of the general nonlinear Dirac equations. We also derive a global bound on the $H^1$ norm of the $L^2$-small solutions of the massive Thirring model.

Nonlinear stationary states in PT-symmetric lattices

In the present work we examine both the linear and nonlinear properties of two related PT-symmetric systems of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger (dNLS) type. First, we examine the parameter range for which the finite PT-dNLS chains have real eigenvalues and PT-symmetric linear eigenstates. We develop a systematic way of analyzing the nonlinear stationary states with the implicit function theorem at an analogue of the anti-continuum limit for the dNLS equation. Secondly, we consider the case when a finite PT-dNLS chain is embedded as a defect in the infinite dNLS lattice. We show that the stability intervals of the infinite PT-dNLS lattice are wider than in the case of a finite PT-dNLS chain. We also prove existence of localized stationary states (discrete solitons) in the analogue of the anti-continuum limit for the dNLS equation. Numerical computations illustrate the existence of nonlinear stationary states, as well as the stability and saddle-center bifurcations of discrete solitons.

On transverse stability of discrete line solitons

We obtain sharp criteria for transverse stability and instability of line solitons in the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations on one- and two-dimensional lattices near the anti-continuum limit. On a two-dimensional lattice, the fundamental line soliton is proved to be transversely stable (unstable) when it bifurcates from the $X$ ($Γ$) point of the dispersion surface. On a one-dimensional (stripe) lattice, the fundamental line soliton is proved to be transversely unstable for both signs of transverse dispersion. If this transverse dispersion has the opposite sign to the discrete dispersion, the instability is caused by a resonance between isolated eigenvalues of negative energy and the continuous spectrum of positive energy. These results hold for both focusing and defocusing nonlinearities via a staggering transformation. When the line soliton is transversely unstable, asymptotic expressions for unstable eigenvalues are also derived. These analytical results are compared with numerical results, and perfect agreement is obtained.

Periodic Travelling Waves in Dimer Granular Chains

We study bifurcations of periodic travelling waves in granular dimer chains from the anti-continuum limit, when the mass ratio between the light and heavy beads is zero. We show that every limiting periodic wave is uniquely continued with respect to the mass ratio parameter and the periodic waves with the wavelength larger than a certain critical value are spectrally stable. Numerical computations are developed to study how this solution family is continued to the limit of equal mass ratio between the beads, where periodic travelling waves of granular monomer chains exist.

Sharp bounds on enstrophy growth in the viscous Burgers equation

We use the Cole--Hopf transformation and the Laplace method for the heat equation to justify the numerical results on enstrophy growth in the viscous Burgers equation on the unit circle. We show that the maximum enstrophy achieved in the time evolution is scaled as $\mathcal{E}^{3/2}$, where $\mathcal{E}$ is the large initial enstrophy, whereas the time needed for reaching the maximal enstrophy is scaled as $\mathcal{E}^{-1/2}$. These bounds are sharp for sufficiently smooth initial conditions.

Paradoxical transitions to instabilities in hydromagnetic Couette-Taylor flows

By methods of modern spectral analysis, we rigorously find distributions of eigenvalues of linearized operators associated with an ideal hydromagnetic Couette-Taylor flow. Transition to instability in the limit of vanishing magnetic field has a discontinuous change compared to the Rayleigh stability criterion for hydrodynamical flows, which is known as the Velikhov-Chandrasekhar paradox.

Dark solitons in external potentials

We consider the persistence and stability of dark solitons in the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation with a small decaying potential. We show that families of black solitons with zero speed originate from extremal points of an appropriately defined effective potential and persist for sufficiently small strength of the potential. We prove that families at the maximum points are generally unstable with exactly one real positive eigenvalue, while families at the minimum points are generally unstable with exactly two complex-conjugated eigenvalues with positive real part. This mechanism of destabilization of the black soliton is confirmed in numerical approximations of eigenvalues of the linearized GP equation and full numerical simulations of the nonlinear GP equation with cubic nonlinearity. We illustrate the monotonic instability associated with the real eigenvalues and the oscillatory instability associated with the complex eigenvalues and compare the numerical results of evolution of a dark soliton with the predictions of Newton's particle law for its position.

Feshbach Resonance Management of Bose-Einstein Condensates in Optical Lattices

We analyze gap solitons in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in optical lattice potentials under Feshbach resonance management. Starting with an averaged Gross-Pitaevsky (GP) equation with a periodic potential, we employ an envelope wave approximation to derive coupled-mode equations describing the slow BEC dynamics in the first spectral gap of the optical lattice. We construct exact analytical formulas describing gap soliton solutions and examine their spectral stability using the Chebyshev interpolation method. We show that these gap solitons are unstable far from the threshold of local bifurcation and that the instability results in the distortion of their shape. We also predict the threshold of the power of gap solitons near the local bifurcation limit.

Incompressible viscous fluid flows in a thin spherical shell

Linearized stability of incompressible viscous fluid flows in a thin spherical shell is studied by using the two-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations on a sphere. The stationary flow on the sphere has two singularities (a sink and a source) at the North and South poles of the sphere. We prove analytically for the linearized Navier--Stokes equations that the stationary flow is asymptotically stable. When the spherical layer is truncated between two symmetrical rings, we study eigenvalues of the linearized equations numerically by using power series solutions and show that the stationary flow remains asymptotically stable for all Reynolds numbers.

Translationally invariant discrete kinks from one-dimensional maps

For most discretisations of the $ϕ^4$ theory, the stationary kink can only be centered either on a lattice site or midway between two adjacent sites. We search for exceptional discretisations which allow stationary kinks to be centered anywhere between the sites. We show that this translational invariance of the kink implies the existence of an underlying one-dimensional map $ϕ_{n+1}=F(ϕ_n)$. A simple algorithm based on this observation generates three different families of exceptional discretisations.

Oscillations of dark solitons in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

We consider a one-dimensional defocusing Gross--Pitaevskii equation with a parabolic potential. Dark solitons oscillate near the center of the potential trap and their amplitude decays due to radiative losses (sound emission). We develop a systematic asymptotic multi-scale expansion method in the limit when the potential trap is flat. The first-order approximation predicts a uniform frequency of oscillations for the dark soliton of arbitrary amplitude. The second-order approximation predicts the nonlinear growth rate of the oscillation amplitude, which results in decay of the dark soliton. The results are compared with the previous publications and numerical computations.
