The influence of color on prices of abstract paintings

Determination of price of an artwork is a fundamental problem in cultural economics. In this work we investigate what impact visual characteristics of a painting have on its price. We construct a number of visual features measuring complexity of the painting, its points of interest, segmentation-based features, local color features, and features based on Itten and Kandinsky theories, and utilize mixed-effects model to study impact of these features on the painting price. We analyze the influence of the color on the example of the most complex art style - abstractionism, by created Kandinsky, for which the color is the primary basis. We use Itten's theory - the most recognized color theory in art history, from which the largest number of subtheories was born. For this day it is taken as the base for teaching artists. We utilize novel dataset of 3885 paintings collected from Christie's and Sotheby's and find that color harmony has some explanatory power, color complexity metrics are insignificant and color diversity explains price well.

Computing with two quantum reservoirs connected via optimized two-qubit nonselective measurements

Currently, quantum reservoir computing is one of the most promising and experimentally accessible techniques for hybrid, quantum-classical machine learning. However, its applications are limited due to practical restrictions on the size of quantum systems and the influence of noise. Here we propose a novel approach to connect two quantum reservoirs in a network to overcome these issues and enhance their computing performance. To transfer information between quantum reservoirs, we perform optimized two-qubit non-selective measurements. We suggest a general heuristic optimization strategy based on tensor network language and matrix representation of two-qubit quantum channels specified for quantum reservoir computing. In addition, we introduce a single qubit purification channel and its optimization for further enhancement of quantum reservoir computing. We also demonstrate that the optimized channels applied to a seven-qubit network can efficiently transfer information between its parts with the resulting performance comparable to a network up to twenty-five qubits connected via a classical information link.

Chaotic waves serve as universal pattern generators

Excitable media are prevalent models for describing physical, chemical, and biological systems which support wave propagation. In this letter, we show that the time evolution of the medium state at the wave fronts can be determined by complicated chaotic attractors. Wave front dynamics can be controlled by initial data choice. Building on this groundwork, we show that there is a mechano-chemical analog of the Universal Turing machine for morphogenesis problems. Namely, a fixed mechano-chemical system can produce any prescribed cell pattern depending on its input (initial data). This universal mechanism uses fundamental physical effects: spontaneous symmetry breaking with formation of many interfaces (kinks), which interact non-locally via a fast diffusing reagent. This interaction creates chaos. We present algorithms allowing us to obtain a prescribed target cell pattern.
