Tubular Neighborhoods of Nodal Sets and Diophantine Approximation

We give upper and lower bounds on the volume of a tubular neighborhood of the nodal set of an eigenfunction of the Laplacian on a real analytic closed Riemannian manifold M. As an application we consider the question of approximating points on M by nodal sets, and explore analogy with approximation by rational numbers.

On the Spectrum of geometric operators on Kähler manifolds

On a compact Kähler manifold there is a canonical action of a Lie-superalgebra on the space of differential forms. It is generated by the differentials, the Lefschetz operator and the adjoints of these operators. We determine the asymptotic distribution of irreducible representations of this Lie-superalgebra on the eigenspaces of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. Because of the high degree of symmetry the Laplace-Beltrami operator on forms can not be quantum ergodic. We show that after taking these symmetries into account quantum ergodicity holds for the Laplace-Beltrami operator and for the Spin^c-Dirac operators if the unitary frame flow is ergodic. The assumptions for our theorem are known to be satisfied for instance for negatively curved Kähler manifolds of odd complex dimension.

A lower bound for the remainder in Weyl's law on negatively curved surfaces

We obtain an estimate from below for the remainder in Weyl's law on negatively curved surfaces. In the constant curvature case, such a bound was proved independently by Hejhal and Randol in 1976 using the Selberg zeta function techniques. Our approach works in arbitrary negative curvature, and is based on wave trace asymptotics for long times, equidistribution of closed geodesics and small-scale microlocalization.

On nodal sets and nodal domains on S^2 and R^2

We discuss possible topological configurations of nodal sets, in particular the number of their components, for spherical harmonics on S^2. We also construct a solution of the equation Delta u=u in R^2 that has only two nodal domains. This equation arises in the study of high energy eigenfunctions.

Estimates from below for the spectral function and for the remainder in local Weyl's law

We obtain asymptotic lower bounds for the spectral function of the Laplacian and for the remainder in local Weyl's law on manifolds. In the negatively curved case, thermodynamic formalism is applied to improve the estimates. Key ingredients of the proof include the wave equation parametrix, a pretrace formula and the Dirichlet box principle. Our results develop and extend the unpublished thesis of A. Karnaukh.

High energy limits of Laplace-type and Dirac-type eigenfunctions and frame flows

We relate high-energy limits of Laplace-type and Dirac-type operators to frame flows on the corresponding manifolds, and show that the ergodicity of frame flows implies quantum ergodicity in an appropriate sense for those operators. Observables for the corresponding quantum systems are matrix-valued pseudodifferential operators and therefore the system remains non-commutative in the high-energy limit. We discuss to what extent the space of stationary high-energy states behaves classically.

Extremal metric for the first eigenvalue on a Klein bottle

The first eigenvalue of the Laplacian on a surface can be viewed as a functional on the space of Riemannian metrics of a given area. Critical points of this functional are called extremal metrics. The only known extremal metrics are a round sphere, a standard projective plane, a Clifford torus and an equilateral torus. We construct an extremal metric on a Klein bottle. It is a metric of revolution, admitting a minimal isometric embedding into a 4-sphere by the first eigenfunctions. Also, this Klein bottle is a bipolar surface for the Lawson's {3,1}-torus. We conjecture that an extremal metric for the first eigenvalue on a Klein bottle is unique, and hence it provides a sharp upper bound for the first eigenvalue on a Klein bottle of a given area. We present numerical evidence and prove the first results towards this conjecture.

Extremal metrics on graphs I

We define a number of natural (from geometric and combinatorial points of view) deformation spaces of valuations on finite graphs, and study functions over these deformation spaces. These functions include both direct metric invariants (girth, diameter), and spectral invariants (the determinant of the Laplace operator, or complexity; bottom non-zero eigenvalue of the Laplace operator). We show that almost all of these functions are, surprisingly, convex, and we characterize the valuations extremizing these invariant

On some extremal problems in graph theory

In this paper we are concerned with various graph invariants (girth, diameter, expansion constants, eigenvalues of the Laplacian, tree number) and their analogs for weighted graphs -- weighing the graph changes a combinatorial problem to one in analysis. We study both weighted and unweighted graphs which are extremal for these invariants. In the unweighted case we concentrate on finding extrema among all (usually) regular graphs with the same number of vertices; we also study the relationships between such graphs.
