On solutions of the reduced model for the dynamical evolution of contact lines

We solve the linear advection-diffusion equation with a variable speed on a semi-infinite line. The variable speed is determined by an additional condition at the boundary, which models the dynamics of a contact line of a hydrodynamic flow at a 180 contact angle. We use Laplace transform in spatial coordinate and Green's function for the fourth-order diffusion equation to show local existence of solutions of the initial-value problem associated with the set of over-determining boundary conditions. We also analyze the explicit solution in the case of a constant speed (dropping the additional boundary condition).

Multi-site breathers in Klein-Gordon lattices: stability, resonances, and bifurcations

We prove the most general theorem about spectral stability of multi-site breathers in the discrete Klein-Gordon equation with a small coupling constant. In the anti-continuum limit, multi-site breathers represent excited oscillations at different sites of the lattice separated by a number of "holes" (sites at rest). The theorem describes how the stability or instability of a multi-site breather depends on the phase difference and distance between the excited oscillators. Previously, only multi-site breathers with adjacent excited sites were considered within the first-order perturbation theory. We show that the stability of multi-site breathers with one-site holes change for large-amplitude oscillations in soft nonlinear potentials. We also discover and study a symmetry-breaking (pitchfork) bifurcation of one-site and multi-site breathers in soft quartic potentials near the points of 1:3 resonance.

Enstrophy growth in the viscous Burgers equation

We study bounds on the enstrophy growth for solutions of the viscous Burgers equation on the unit circle. Using the variational formulation of Lu and Doering, we prove that the maximizer of the enstrophy's rate of change is sharp in the limit of large enstrophy up to a numerical constant but does not saturate the Poincaré inequality for mean-zero 1-periodic functions. Using the dynamical system methods, we give an asymptotic representation of the maximizer in the limit of large enstrophy as a viscous shock on the background of a linear rarefactive wave. This asymptotic construction is used to prove that a larger growth of enstrophy can be achieved when the initial data to the viscous Burgers equation saturates the Poincaré inequality up to a numerical constant. An exact self-similar solution of the Burgers equation is constructed to describe formation of a metastable viscous shock on the background of a linear rarefactive wave. When we consider the Burgers equation on an infinite line subject to the nonzero (shock-type) boundary conditions, we prove that the maximum enstrophy achieved in the time evolution is scaled as $\mathcal{E}^{3/2}$, where $\mathcal{E}$ is the large initial enstrophy, whereas the time needed for reaching the maximal enstrophy is scaled as $\mathcal{E}^{-1/2} \log(\mathcal{E})$. Similar but slower rates are proved on the unit circle.

Vortex families near a spectral edge in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a two-dimensional periodic potential

We examine numerically vortex families near band edges of the Bloch wave spectrum in the Gross--Pitaevskii equation with a two-dimensional periodic potential and in the discrete nonlinear Schroedinger equation. We show that besides vortex families that terminate at a small distance from the band edges via fold bifurcations there exist vortex families that are continued all way to the band edges.

Broad Band Solitons in a Periodic and Nonlinear Maxwell System

We consider the one-dimensional Maxwell equations with low contrast periodic linear refractive index and weak Kerr nonlinearity. In this context, wave packet initial conditions with a single carrier frequency excite infinitely many resonances. On large but finite time-scales, the coupled evolution of backward and forward waves is governed by nonlocal equations of resonant nonlinear geometrical optics. For the special class of solutions which are periodic in the fast phase, these equations are equivalent to an infinite system of nonlinear coupled mode equations, the so called it extended nonlinear coupled mode equations, xNLCME. Numerical studies support the existence of long-lived spatially localized coherent structures, featuring a slowly varying envelope and a train of carrier shocks. In this paper we explore, by analytical, asymptotic and numerical methods, the existence and properties of spatially localized structures of the xNLCME system, which arises for a refractive index profile consisting of periodic array of Dirac delta functions. We consider the limit of small amplitude solutions with frequencies near a band-edge. In this case, stationary xNLCME is well-approximated by an infinite system of coupled, stationary, nonlinear Schrödinger equations, the extended nonlinear Schrödinger system, xNLS. We embed xNLS in a one-parameter family of equations, xNLS$^ε$, which interpolates between infinitely many decoupled NLS equations ($ε=0$) and xNLS ($ε=1$). Using bifurcation methods we show existence of solutions for a range of $ε\in(-ε_0,ε_0)$ and, by a numerical continuation method, establish the continuation of certain branches all the way to $ε=1$. Finally, we perform time-dependent simulations of truncated xNLCME and find the small-amplitude solitons to be robust to both numerical errors and the NLS approximation.

Internal modes of discrete solitons near the anti-continuum limit of the dNLS equation

Discrete solitons of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (dNLS) equation become compactly supported in the anti-continuum limit of the zero coupling between lattice sites. Eigenvalues of the linearization of the dNLS equation at the discrete soliton determine its spectral and linearized stability. All unstable eigenvalues of the discrete solitons near the anti-continuum limit were characterized earlier for this model. Here we analyze the resolvent operator and prove that it is uniformly bounded in the neighborhood of the continuous spectrum if the discrete soliton is simply connected in the anti-continuum limit. This result rules out existence of internal modes (neutrally stable eigenvalues of the discrete spectrum) of such discrete solitons near the anti-continuum limit.

Normal form for the symmetry-breaking bifurcation in the nonlinear Schrodinger equation

We derive and justify a normal form reduction of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation for a general pitchfork bifurcation of the symmetric bound state that occurs in a double-well symmetric potential. We prove persistence of normal form dynamics for both supercritical and subcritical pitchfork bifurcations in the time-dependent solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation over long but finite time intervals.

Asymptotic behavior of regularized shock solutions in coating flows

We consider a model for thin liquid films in a rotating cylinder in the small surface tension limit. Using dynamical system methods, we show that the continuum of increasing shock solutions persists in the small surface tension limit, whereas the continuum of decreasing shock solutions terminates at the limit. Using delicate numerical computations, we show that the existence curves of regularized shock solutions on the mass-flux diagram exhibit loops. The number of loops increases and their locations move to infinity as the surface tension parameter decreases to zero. If $n$ is the number of loops in the mass-flux diagram with $2n+1$ solution branches, we show that $n+1$ solution branches are stable with respect to small perturbations.

Backlund transformation and L2-stability of NLS solitons

Ground states of a L2-subcritical focusing nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation are known to be orbitally stable in the energy class H1 thanks to its variational characterization. In this paper, we will show L2-orbital stability of 1-solitons to a one-dimensional cubic NLS equation for any initial data which are close to 1-solitons in L2. Moreover, we prove that if the initial data are in H3 in addition to being small in L2, then the solution remains in an L2-neighborhood of a specific 1-soliton solution for all the time. The proof relies on the Backlund transformation between zero and soliton solutions of this integrable equation.

Survey on global existence in the nonlinear Dirac equations in one dimension

We consider the nonlinear Dirac equations in one dimension and review various results on global existence of solutions in H1. Depending on the character of the nonlinear terms, existence of the large-norm solutions can be extended for all times. Global existence of the small-norm solutions is proved for the most general nonlinear Dirac equations with cubic and higher-order nonlinear terms. Integrability of the massive Thirring model is used to find conditions that no solitons occur in the Cauchy problem with small initial data in a subspace of L2.

Breather continuation from infinity in nonlinear oscillator chains

Existence of large-amplitude time-periodic breathers localized near a single site is proved for the discrete Klein--Gordon equation, in the case when the derivative of the on-site potential has a compact support. Breathers are obtained at small coupling between oscillators and under nonresonance conditions. Our method is different from the classical anti-continuum limit developed by MacKay and Aubry, and yields in general branches of breather solutions that cannot be captured with this approach. When the coupling constant goes to zero, the amplitude and period of oscillations at the excited site go to infinity. Our method is based on near-identity transformations, analysis of singular limits in nonlinear oscillator equations, and fixed-point arguments.

Global well-posedness of the short-pulse and sine-Gordon equations in energy space

We prove global well-posedness of the short-pulse equation with small initial data in Sobolev space $H^2$. Our analysis relies on local well-posedness results of Schäfer & Wayne, the correspondence of the short-pulse equation to the sine-Gordon equation in characteristic coordinates, and a number of conserved quantities of the short-pulse equation. We also prove local and global well-posedness of the sine-Gordon equation in an appropriate function space.

Asymptotic properties of excited states in the Thomas--Fermi limit

Excited states are stationary localized solutions of the Gross--Pitaevskii equation with a harmonic potential and a repulsive nonlinear term that have zeros on a real axis. Existence and asymptotic properties of excited states are considered in the semi-classical (Thomas-Fermi) limit. Using the method of Lyapunov--Schmidt reductions and the known properties of the ground state in the Thomas--Fermi limit, we show that excited states can be approximated by a product of dark solitons (localized waves of the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonzero boundary conditions) and the ground state. The dark solitons are centered at the equilibrium points where a balance between the actions of the harmonic potential and the tail-to-tail interaction potential is achieved.

On the Thomas-Fermi ground state in a harmonic potential

We study nonlinear ground states of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the space of one, two and three dimensions with a radially symmetric harmonic potential. The Thomas-Fermi approximation of ground states on various spatial scales was recently justified using variational methods. We justify here the Thomas-Fermi approximation on an uniform spatial scale using the Painlevé-II equation. In the space of one dimension, these results allow us to characterize the distribution of eigenvalues in the point spectrum of the Schrödinger operator associated with the nonlinear ground state.

Bifurcation of gap solitons in periodic potentials with a sign-varying nonlinearity coefficient

We address the Gross--Pitaevskii (GP) equation with a periodic linear potential and a periodic sign-varying nonlinearity coefficient. Contrary to the claims in the previous works of Abdullaev {\em et al.} [PRE {\bf 77}, 016604 (2008)] and Smerzi & Trombettoni [PRA {\bf 68}, 023613 (2003)], we show that the intersite cubic nonlinear terms in the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation appear beyond the applicability of assumptions of the tight-binding approximation. Instead of these terms, for an even linear potential and an odd nonlinearity coefficient, the DNLS equation and other reduced equations for the semi-infinite gap have the quintic nonlinear term, which correctly describes bifurcation of gap solitons.

Wave breaking in the short-pulse equation

Sufficient conditions for wave breaking are found for the short-pulse equation describing wave packets of few cycles on the ultra-short pulse scale. The analysis relies on the method of characteristics and conserved quantities of the short-pulse equation and holds both on an infinite line and in a periodic domain. Numerical illustrations of the finite-time wave breaking are given in a periodic domain.

Wave breaking in the Ostrovsky--Hunter equation

The Ostrovsky--Hunter equation governs evolution of shallow water waves on a rotating fluid in the limit of small high-frequency dispersion. Sufficient conditions for the wave breaking in the Ostrovsky--Hunter equation are found both on an infinite line and in a periodic domain. Using the method of characteristics, we also specify the blow-up rate at which the waves break. Numerical illustrations of the finite-time wave breaking are given in a periodic domain.

Surface gap solitons at a nonlinearity interface

We demonstrate existence of waves localized at the interface of two nonlinear periodic media with different coefficients of the cubic nonlinearity via the one-dimensional Gross--Pitaevsky equation. We call these waves the surface gap solitons (SGS). In the case of smooth symmetric periodic potentials, we study analytically bifurcations of SGS's from standard gap solitons and determine numerically the maximal jump of the nonlinearity coefficient allowing for the SGS existence. We show that the maximal jump vanishes near the thresholds of bifurcations of gap solitons. In the case of continuous potentials with a jump in the first derivative at the interface, we develop a homotopy method of continuation of SGS families from the solution obtained via gluing of parts of the standard gap solitons and study existence of SGS's in the photonic band gaps. We explain the termination of the SGS families in the interior points of the band gaps from the bifurcation of linear bound states in the continuous non-smooth potentials.
