Comment on "Monochromatization interaction region optics design for direct s-channel Higgs production at FCC-ee"

The original article [1] can be logically divided into two parts: 1) the selection of main parameters for monochromatization and 2) interaction region optics design; the comment pertains only to the first part. The authors of [1] state that "The purpose of this paper is to report on the development of realistic IR optics designs for monochromatization at the FCC-ee". However, the proposed parameters do not seem very realistic and raise many questions; due to space limitations, we will only consider the most important ones.

How to increase the physics output per MW.h for FCC-ee?

The efficiency of colliders for physics is largely determined by their luminosity, while most of the energy consumed by high-energy $e^+e^-$ colliders is proportional to the total beam current. Thus, the energy efficiency is mainly determined by the specific luminosity that needs to be maximized. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by using the Crab waist collision scheme, which implies a large Piwinski angle (LPA). A distinctive feature of the FCC-ee is the great influence of beamstrahlung (radiation in the field of an opposite bunch) on beam dynamics. At low energies, this manifests itself in a significant increase in the energy spread and bunch length, at high energies, in a limitation of the beam lifetime. The collision of intense bunches with LPA and beamstrahlung can also lead to various kinds of instabilities limiting the luminosity. Here, we discuss the main aspects to consider when optimizing the parameters of the FCC-ee collider at different energies and explain the choice of basic parameters such as RF voltage, lattice functions at IP, bunch intensity, etc. We will also pay attention to open issues requiring further study and identify some key points for the next phase of this project.

Suppression of the longitudinal coupled bunch instability in DA$Φ$NE in collisions with a crossing angle

In DAFNE, the Frascati $e^+e^-$ collider operating since 1998, an innovative collision scheme, the crab waist, has been successfully implemented during the years 2008-09. During operations for the Siddharta experiment an unusual synchrotron oscillation damping effect induced by beam-beam collisions has been observed. Indeed, when the longitudinal feedback is off, the positron beam becomes unstable with currents above 200-300 mA due to coupled bunch instability. The longitudinal instability is damped by colliding the positron beam with a high current electron beam (of the order of 2 A). A shift of about -600 Hz in the residual synchrotron sidebands is observed. Precise measurements have been performed by using both a commercial spectrum analyzer and the diagnostic capabilities of the longitudinal bunch-by-bunch feedback. The damping effect has been observed in DAFNE for the first time during collisions with the crab waist scheme. Our explanation, based both on theoretical consideration and modeling simulation, is that beam collisions with a large crossing angle produce longitudinal tune shift and spread, providing Landau damping of synchrotron oscillations.

Polarization and Centre-of-mass Energy Calibration at FCC-ee

The first stage of the FCC (Future Circular Collider) is a high-luminosity electron-positron collider (FCC-ee) with centre-of-mass energy ranging from 88 to 365 GeV, to study with high precision the Z, W, Higgs and top particles, with samples of $5 \times 10^{12}$ Z bosons, $10^8$ W pairs, $10^6$ Higgs bosons and $10^6$ top quark pairs. A cornerstone of the physics program lays in the precise (ppm) measurements of the W and Z masses and widths, as well as forward-backward asymmetries. To this effect the centre-of-mass energy distribution should be determined with the high precision. This document describes the capacity offered by FCC-ee, starting with transverse polarization of the beams around the Z pole and the W pair threshold. A running scheme based on regular measurements of the beam energy by resonant depolarization of pilot bunches, during physics data taking, is proposed. The design for polarization wigglers, polarimeter and depolarizer is outlined. The $e^\pm$ beam energies will be monitored with a relative precision of $10^{-6}$. The centre-of-mass energy is derived subject to further corrections, related to the beam acceleration, synchrotron radiation and beamstrahlung; these effects are identified and evaluated. Dimuon events $e^+e^- \to μ^+ μ^-$, recorded in the detectors, provide with great precision the beam crossing angle, the centre-of-mass energy spread, and the $e^+$ and $e^-$ energy difference. Monitoring methods to minimize absolute error and relative uncertainties are discussed. The impact on the physics measurements is given. A programme of further simulations, design, monitoring and R&D is outlined.

Simulation of Crab Waist Collisions In DAΦNE With KLOE-2 Interaction Region

After the successful completion of the SIDDHARTA experiment run with crab waist collisions, the electron- positron collider DAΦNE has started routine operations for the KLOE-2 detector. The new interaction region also exploits the crab waist collision scheme, but features certain complications including the experimental detector solenoid, compensating anti-solenoids, and tilted quadrupole magnets. We have performed simulations of the beam-beam collisions in the collider taking into account the real DAΦNE nonlinear lattice. In particular, we have evaluated the effect of crab waist sextupoles and beam-beam interactions on the DAΦNE dynamical aperture and energy acceptance, and estimated the luminosity that can be potentially achieved with and without crab waist sextupoles in the present working conditions. A numerical analysis has been performed in order to propose possible steps for further luminosity increase in DAΦNE such as a better working point choice, crab sextupole strength optimization, correction of the phase advance between the sextupoles and the interaction region. The proposed change of the e- ring working point was implemented and resulted in a significant performance increase.

DAFNE Consolidation Program and Operation with the KLOE-2 Detector

After a long preparatory phase, including a wide hardware consolidation program, the Italian lepton collider DAFNE, is now systematically delivering data to the KLOE-2 experiment. In approximately 200 days of operation 1 fb-1 has been given to the detector limiting the background to a level compatible with an efficient data acquisition. Instantaneous and maximum daily integrated luminosity measured, so far, are considerably higher with respect to the previous KLOE runs, and are: L(inst) ~ 2.0 1032 cm-2s-1, and L(day) ~ 12.5 pb-1 respectively. A general review concerning refurbishing activities, machine optimization efforts and data taking performances is presented and discussed.

Recent Beam-Beam Effects at VEPP-2000 and VEPP-4M

Budker INP hosts two e+e- colliders, VEPP-4M operating in the beam energy range of 1-5.5 GeV and the low-energy machine VEPP-2000, collecting data at 160-1000 MeV per beam. The latter uses a novel concept of round colliding beams. The paper presents an overview of observed beam-beam effects and obtained luminosities.

Synchrotron oscillation damping due to beam-beam collisions

In DAΦNE, the Frascati e+/e- collider, the crab waist collision scheme has been successfully implemented in 2008 and 2009. During the collision operations for Siddharta experiment, an unusual synchrotron damping effect has been observed. Indeed, with the longitudinal feedback switched off, the positron beam becomes unstable with beam currents in the order of 200-300 mA. The longitudinal instability is damped by bringing the positron beam in collision with a high current electron beam (~2A). Besides, we have observed a shift of \approx 600Hz in the residual synchrotron sidebands. Precise measurements have been performed by using both a commercial spectrum analyzer and the diagnostics capabilities of the DAΦNE longitudinal bunch-by-bunch feedback. This damping effect has been observed in DAΦNE for the first time during collisions with the crab waist scheme. Our explanation is that beam collisions with a large crossing angle produce a longitudinal tune shift and a longitudinal tune spread, providing Landau damping of synchrotron oscillations.

Beam-Beam Resonances for Different Collision Schemes

One of the main advantages of proposed by P. Raimondi "Crab Waist" collision scheme is a strong suppression of betatron resonances excited by beam-beam interaction. Some qualitative explanations with numerical examples, describing beam-beam resonances for different collision schemes, were given in arXiv:physics/0702033. This paper can be considered as an "appendix" (additional illustration) to that one. We performed a number of full 2D betatron tune scans (beam-beam simulations) for different collision schemes, so one can easily see how the beam-beam resonances appear and disappear, depending on the colliding conditions.
