Long-time asymptotics for the integrable nonlocal focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation for a family of step-like initial data

We study the Cauchy problem for the integrable nonlocal focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NNLS) equation $ iq_{t}(x,t)+q_{xx}(x,t)+2 q^{2}(x,t)\bar{q}(-x,t)=0 $ with the step-like initial data close to the ``shifted step function'' $χ_R(x)=AH(x-R)$, where $H(x)$ is the Heaviside step function, and $A>0$ and $R>0$ are arbitrary constants. Our main aim is to study the large-$t$ behavior of the solution of this problem. We show that for $R\in\left(\frac{(2n-1)π}{2A},\frac{(2n+1)π}{2A}\right)$, $n=1,2,\dots$, the $(x,t)$ plane splits into $4n+2$ sectors exhibiting different asymptotic behavior. Namely, there are $2n+1$ sectors where the solution decays to $0$, whereas in the other $2n+1$ sectors (alternating with the sectors with decay), the solution approaches (different) constants along each ray $x/t=const$. Our main technical tool is the representation of the solution of the Cauchy problem in terms of the solution of an associated matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem and its subsequent asymptotic analysis following the ideas of nonlinear steepest descent method.

Long-time asymptotics for the integrable nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We study the initial value problem for the integrable nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NNLS) equation \[ iq_{t}(x,t)+q_{xx}(x,t)+2σq^{2}(x,t)\bar{q}(-x,t)=0 \] with decaying (as $x\to\pm\infty$) boundary conditions. The main aim is to describe the long-time behavior of the solution of this problem. To do this, we adapt the nonlinear steepest-decent method \cite{DZ} to the study of the Riemann-Hilbert problem associated with the NNLS equation. Our main result is that, in contrast to the local NLS equation, where the main asymptotic term (in the solitonless case) decays to $0$ as $O(t^{-1/2})$ along any ray $x/t=const$, the power decay rate in the case of the NNLS depends, in general, on $x/t$, and can be expressed in terms of the spectral functions associated with the initial data.

A Riemann-Hilbert Approach for the Novikov Equation

We develop the inverse scattering transform method for the Novikov equation $u_t-u_{txx}+4u^2u_x=3u u_xu_{xx}+u^2u_{xxx}$ considered on the line $x\in(-\infty,\infty)$ in the case of non-zero constant background. The approach is based on the analysis of an associated Riemann-Hilbert (RH) problem, which in this case is a $3\times 3$ matrix problem. The structure of this RH problem shares many common features with the case of the Degasperis-Procesi (DP) equation having quadratic nonlinear terms (see [Boutet de Monvel A., Shepelsky D., Nonlinearity 26 (2013), 2081-2107, arXiv:1107.5995]) and thus the Novikov equation can be viewed as a "modified DP equation", in analogy with the relationship between the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation and the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation. We present parametric formulas giving the solution of the Cauchy problem for the Novikov equation in terms of the solution of the RH problem and discuss the possibilities to use the developed formalism for further studying of the Novikov equation.

The short pulse equation by a Riemann-Hilbert approach

We develop a Riemann-Hilbert approach to the inverse scattering transform method for the short pulse (SP) equation $u_{xt}=u+\frac{1}{6}(u^3)_{xx}$ with zero boundary conditions (as $|x|\to\infty$). This approach is directly applied to the Lax pair for the SP equation. It allows us to give a parametric representation of the solution to the Cauchy problem. This representation is then used for studying the long-time behavior of the solution as well as for retrieving the soliton solutions. Finally, the analysis of the long-time behavior allows us to formulate, in spectral terms, a sufficient condition for the wave breaking.

Robin boundary condition and shock problem for the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We consider the initial boundary value (IBV) problem for the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the quarter plane $x>0,t>0$ in the case of periodic initial data (at $t=0$) and a Robin boundary condition at $x=0$. Our approach is based on the simultaneous spectral analysis of the Lax pair equations combined with symmetry considerations for the corresponding Riemann-Hilbert problems. A connection between the original IBV problem and an associated initial value (IV) problem is established.

The Ostrovsky-Vakhnenko equation by a Riemann-Hilbert approach

We present an inverse scattering transform approach for the equation $u_{txx}-3u_x+3u_xu_{xx}+uu_{xxx}=0$. This equation can be viewed as the short wave model for the Degasperis-Procesi equation or the differentiated Ostrovsky-Vakhnenko equation. The approach is based on an associated Riemann-Hilbert problem, which allows us to give a representation for the classical (smooth) solution, to get the principal term of its long time asymptotics, and also to describe loop soliton solutions.

Initial boundary value problem for the focusing NLS equation with Robin boundary condition: half-line approach

We consider the initial boundary value problem for the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the quarter plane $x>0,t>0$ in the case of decaying initial data (for $t=0$, as $x\to +\infty$) and the Robin boundary condition at $x=0$. We revisit the approach based on the simultaneous spectral analysis of the Lax pair equations [Fokas, 2002; Fokas, Its, Sung, 2005] and show that the approach can be implemented without any a priori assumptions on the long-time behavior of the boundary values.

Long-Time Asymptotics for the Camassa-Holm Equation

We apply the method of nonlinear steepest descent to compute the long-time asymptotics of the Camassa-Holm equation for decaying initial data, completing previous results by A. Boutet de Monvel and D. Shepelsky.

The mKdV equation on a finite interval

We analyse an initial-boundary value problem for the mKdV equation on a finite interval by expressing the solution in terms of the solution of an associated matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem in the complex $k$-plane. This Riemann-Hilbert problem has explicit $(x,t)$-dependence and it involves certain functions of $k$ referred to as ``spectral functions''. Some of these functions are defined in terms of the initial condition $q(x,0)=q_0(x)$, while the remaining spectral functions are defined in terms of two sets of boundary values. We show that the spectral functions satisfy an algebraic ``global relation'' that characterize the boundary values in spectral terms.
