Geometry of symplectic flux and Lagrangian torus fibrations

Symplectic flux measures the areas of cylinders swept in the process of a Lagrangian isotopy. We study flux via a numerical invariant of a Lagrangian submanifold that we define using its Fukaya algebra. The main geometric feature of the invariant is its concavity over isotopies with linear flux. We derive constraints on flux, Weinstein neighbourhood embeddings and holomorphic disk potentials for Gelfand-Cetlin fibres of Fano varieties in terms of their polytopes. We also describe the space of fibres of almost toric fibrations on the complex projective plane up to Hamiltonian isotopy, and provide other applications.

Super-rigidity of certain skeleta using relative symplectic cohomology

This article uses relative symplectic cohomology, recently studied by the second author, to understand rigidity phenomena for compact subsets of symplectic manifolds. As an application, we consider a symplectic crossings divisor in a Calabi-Yau symplectic manifold $M$ whose complement is a Liouville manifold. We show that, for a carefully chosen Liouville structure, the skeleton as a subset of $M$ exhibits strong rigidity properties akin to super-heavy subsets of Entov-Polterovich. Along the way, we expand the toolkit of relative symplectic cohomology by introducing products and units. We also develop what we call the contact Fukaya trick, concerning the behaviour of relative symplectic cohomology of subsets with contact type boundary under adding a Liouville collar.

Refined disk potentials for immersed Lagrangian surfaces

We define a refined Gromov-Witten disk potential of self-transverse monotone immersed Lagrangian surfaces in a symplectic 4-manifold as an element in a capped version of the Chekanov--Eliashberg dg-algebra of the singularity links of the double points (a collection of Legendrian Hopf links). We give a surgery formula that expresses the potential after smoothing a double point. We study refined potentials of monotone immersed Lagrangian spheres in the complex projective plane and find monotone spheres that cannot be displaced from complex lines and conics by symplectomorphisms. We also derive general restrictions on sphere potentials using Legendrian lifts to the contact 5-sphere.

From symplectic cohomology to Lagrangian enumerative geometry

We build a bridge between Floer theory on open symplectic manifolds and the enumerative geometry of holomorphic disks inside their Fano compactifications, by detecting elements in symplectic cohomology which are mirror to Landau-Ginzburg potentials. We also treat the higher Maslov index versions of the potentials. We discover a relation between higher disk potentials and symplectic cohomology rings of smooth anticanonical divisor complements (themselves conjecturally related to closed-string Gromov-Witten invariants), and explore several other applications to the geometry of Liouville domains.

String topology with gravitational descendants, and periods of Landau-Ginzburg potentials

This paper introduces new operations on the string topology of a smooth manifold: gravitational descendants of its cotangent bundle, which are augmentations of the Chas-Sullivan $L_\infty$ algebra structure of the loop space. The definition extends to Liouville domains. Descendants of the $n$-torus are computed. To a monotone Lagrangian torus in a symplectic manifold, one associates a Laurent polynomial called the Landau-Ginzburg potential, by counting holomorphic disks. This paper proves the following mirror symmetry prediction: the constant terms of the powers of an LG potential are equal to descendant Gromov-Witten invariants of the ambient manifold.

The wall-crossing formula and Lagrangian mutations

We prove a general form of the wall-crossing formula which relates the disk potentials of monotone Lagrangian submanifolds with their Floer-theoretic behavior away from a Donaldson divisor. We define geometric operations called mutations of Lagrangian tori in del Pezzo surfaces and in toric Fano varieties of higher dimension, and study the corresponding wall-crossing formulas that compute the disk potential of a mutated torus from that of the original one. In the case of del Pezzo surfaces, this justifies the connection between Vianna's tori and the theory of mutations of Landau-Ginzburg seeds. In higher dimension, this provides new Lagrangian tori in toric Fanos corresponding to different chambers of the mirror variety, including ones which are conjecturally separated by infinitely many walls from the chamber containing the standard toric fibre.

Low-area Floer theory and non-displaceability

We introduce a new version of Floer theory of a non-monotone Lagrangian submanifold which only uses least area holomorphic disks with boundary on it. We use this theory to prove non-displaceability theorems about continuous families of Lagrangian tori in the complex projective plane and other del Pezzo surfaces.

The closed-open string map for $S^1$-invariant Lagrangians

Given a monotone Lagrangian submanifold invariant under a loop of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms, we compute a piece of the closed-open string map into the Hochschild cohomology of the Lagrangian which captures the homology class of the loop's orbit. Our applications include split-generation and non-formality results for real Lagrangians in projective spaces and other toric varieties; a particularly basic example is that the equatorial circle on the 2-sphere carries a non-formal Fukaya A-infinity algebra in characteristic two.

Commuting symplectomorphisms and Dehn twists in divisors

Two commuting symplectomorphisms of a symplectic manifold give rise to actions on Floer cohomologies of each other. We prove the elliptic relation saying that the supertraces of these two actions are equal. In the case when a symplectomorphism $f$ commutes with a symplectic involution, the elliptic relation provides a lower bound on the dimension of $HF^*(f)$ in terms of the Lefschetz number of $f$ restricted to the fixed locus of the involution. We apply this bound to prove that Dehn twists around vanishing Lagrangian spheres inside most hypersurfaces in Grassmannians have infinite order in the symplectic mapping class group.

Good covers are algorithmically unrecognizable

A good cover in R^d is a collection of open contractible sets in R^d such that the intersection of any subcollection is either contractible or empty. Motivated by an analogy with convex sets, intersection patterns of good covers were studied intensively. Our main result is that intersection patterns of good covers are algorithmically unrecognizable. More precisely, the intersection pattern of a good cover can be stored in a simplicial complex called nerve which records which subfamilies of the good cover intersect. A simplicial complex is topologically d-representable if it is isomorphic to the nerve of a good cover in R^d. We prove that it is algorithmically undecidable whether a given simplicial complex is topologically d-representable for any fixed d \geq 5. The result remains also valid if we replace good covers with acyclic covers or with covers by open d-balls. As an auxiliary result we prove that if a simplicial complex is PL embeddable into R^d, then it is topologically d-representable. We also supply this result with showing that if a "sufficiently fine" subdivision of a k-dimensional complex is d-representable and k \leq (2d-3)/3, then the complex is PL embeddable into R^d.

Singularities of integrable Hamiltonian systems: a criterion for non-degeneracy, with an application to the Manakov top

Let (M,ω) be a symplectic 2n-manifold and h_1,...,h_n be functionally independent commuting functions on M. We present a geometric criterion for a singular point P\in M (i.e. such that {dh_i(P)}_{i=1}^n are linearly dependent) to be non-degenerate in the sence of Vey-Eliasson. Then we apply Fomenko's theory to study the neighborhood U of the singular Liouville fiber containing saddle-saddle singularities of the Manakov top. Namely, we describe the singular Liouville foliation on U and the `Bohr-Sommerfeld' lattices on the momentum map image of U. A relation with the quantum Manakov top studied by Sinitsyn and Zhilinskii (SIGMA 3 2007, arXiv:math-ph/0703045) is discussed.

Embedding 3-manifolds with boundary into closed 3-manifolds

We prove that there is an algorithm which determines whether or not a given 2-polyhedron can be embedded into some integral homology 3-sphere. This is a corollary of the following main result. Let $M$ be a compact connected orientable 3-manifold with boundary. Denote $G=\Z$, $G=\Z/p\Z$ or $G=\Q$. If $H_1(M;G)\cong G^k$ and $\bd M$ is a surface of genus $g$, then the minimal group $H_1(Q;G)$ for closed 3-manifolds $Q$ containing $M$ is isomorphic to $G^{k-g}$. Another corollary is that for a graph $L$ the minimal number $\rk H_1(Q;\Z)$ for closed orientable 3-manifolds $Q$ containing $L\times S^1$ is twice the orientable genus of the graph.

Embedding punctured n-manifolds in Euclidean (2n-1)-space

Let $N$ be a closed orientable connected $n$-manifold, $n\ge 4$. We classify embeddings of the punctured manifold $N_0$ into $\R^{2n-1}$ up to isotopy. Our result in some sense extends results of J.C. Becker -- H.H. Glover (1971) and O. Saeki (1999).
