Absolute stability and absolute hyperbolicity in systems with discrete time-delays

An equilibrium of a delay differential equation (DDE) is absolutely stable, if it is locally asymptotically stable for all delays. We present criteria for absolute stability of DDEs with discrete time-delays. In the case of a single delay, the absolute stability is shown to be equivalent to asymptotic stability for sufficiently large delays. Similarly, for multiple delays, the absolute stability is equivalent to asymptotic stability for hierarchically large delays. Additionally, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a linear DDE to be hyperbolic for all delays. The latter conditions are crucial for determining whether a system can have stabilizing or destabilizing bifurcations by varying time delays.

Wild pseudohyperbolic attractor in a four-dimensional Lorenz system

We present an example of a new strange attractor which, as we show, belongs to a class of wild pseudohyperbolic spiral attractors. We find this attractor in a four-dimensional system of differential equations which can be represented as an extension of the Lorenz system.

Permuting quantum eigenmodes by a quasi-adiabatic motion of a potential wall

We study the Schrödinger equation $i\partial_tψ=-Δψ+Vψ$ on $L^2((0,1),\mathbb{C})$ where $V$ is a very high and localized potential wall. We aim to perform permutations of the eigenmodes and to control the solution of the equation. We consider the process where the position and the height of the potential wall change as follows. First, the potential increases from zero to a very large value, so a narrow potential wall is formed that almost splits the interval into two parts; then the wall moves to a different position, after which the height of the wall decays to zero again. We show that even though the rate of the variation of the potential's parameters can be arbitrarily slow, this process alternates adiabatic and non-adiabatic dynamics, leading to a non-trivial permutation of the eigenstates. Furthermore, we consider potentials with several narrow walls and we show how an arbitrarily slow motion of the walls can lead the system from any given state to an arbitrarily small neighborhood of any other state, thus proving the approximate controllability of the above Schrödinger equation by means of a soft, quasi-adiabatic variation of the potential.

Persistent heterodimensional cycles in periodic perturbations of Lorenz-like attractors

We prove that heterodimensional cycles can be created by unfolding a pair of homoclinic tangencies in a certain class of C-infinity diffeomorphisms. This implies the existence of a C2- open domain in the space of dynamical systems with a certain type of symmetry where systems with heterodimensional cycles are dense in C-infinity. In particular, we describe a class of three-dimensional flows with a Lorenz-like attractor such that an arbitrarily small perturbation of any such flow can belong to this domain - in this case the corresponding heterodimensional cycles belong to a chain-transitive attractor of the perturbed flow.

Fast growth of the number of periodic points arising from heterodimensional connections

We consider C^r-diffeomorphisms of a compact smooth manifold having a pair of robust heterodimensional cycles where r is a positive integer or infinity. We prove that if certain conditions about the signatures of non-linearities and Schwarzian derivatives of the transition maps are satisfied, then by giving C^r arbitrarily small perturbation, we can produce a periodic point at which the first return map in the center direction is C^r-flat. As a consequence, we will prove that C^r-generic diffeomorphisms in the neighborhood of the initial diffeomorphism exhibit super-exponential growth of number of periodic points. We also give examples which show the necessity of the conditions on non-linearities and the Schwarzian derivatives.

On the non-transverse homoclinic channel of a center manifold

We consider a scenario when a stable and unstable manifolds of compact center manifold of a saddle-center coincide. The normal form of the ODE governing the system near the center manifold is derived and so is the normal form of the return map to the neighbourhood of the center manifold. The limit dynamics of the return map is investigated by showing that it might take the form of a Henon-like map possessing a Lorenz-like attractor or satisfy 'cone-field condition' resulting in partial hyperbolicity. We consider also motivating example from game theory.

Splitting of separatrices, scattering maps, and energy growth for a billiard inside a time-dependent symmetric domain close to an ellipse

We study billiard dynamics inside an ellipse for which the axes lengths are changed periodically in time and an $O(δ)$-small quartic polynomial deformation is added to the boundary. In this situation the energy of the particle in the billiard is no longer conserved. We show a Fermi acceleration in such system: there exists a billiard trajectory on which the energy tends to infinity. The construction is based on the analysis of dynamics in the phase space near a homoclinic intersection of the stable and unstable manifolds of the normally hyperbolic invariant cylinder $Λ$, parameterised by the energy and time, that corresponds to the motion along the major axis of the ellipse. The proof depends on the reduction of the billiard map near the homoclinic channel to an iterated function system comprised by the shifts along two Hamiltonian flows defined on $Λ$. The two flows approximate the so-called inner and scattering maps, which are basic tools that arise in the studies of the Arnold diffusion; the scattering maps defined by the projection along the strong stable and strong unstable foliations $W^{ss,uu}$ of the stable and unstable invariant manifolds $W^{s,u}(Λ)$ at the homoclinic points. Melnikov type calculations imply that the behaviour of the scattering map in this problem is quite unusual: it is only defined on a small subset of $Λ$ that shrinks, in the large energy limit, to a set of parallel lines $t=const$ as $δ\to 0$.

On three types of dynamics, and the notion of attractor

We propose a theoretical framework for an explanation of the numerically discovered phenomenon of the attractor-repeller merger. We identify regimes which are observed in dynamical systems with attractors as defined in a work by Ruelle and show that these attractors can be of three different types. The first two types correspond to th ewell-known types of chaotic behavior - conservative and dissipative, while the attractors of the third type, the reversible cores, provide a new type of chaos, the so-called mixed dynamics, characterized by the inseparability of dissipative and conservative regimes. We prove that every elliptic orbit of a generic non-conservative time-reversible system is a reversible core. We also prove that a generic reversible system with an elliptic orbit is universal, i.e., it displays dynamics of maximum possible richness and complexity.

Equilibration of energy in slow-fast systems

Ergodicity is a fundamental requirement for a dynamical system to reach a state of statistical equilibrium. On the other hand, it is known that in slow-fast systems ergodicity of the fast sub- system impedes the equilibration of the whole system due to the presence of adiabatic invariants. Here, we show that the violation of ergodicity in the fast dynamics effectively drives the whole system to equilibrium. To demonstrate this principle we investigate dynamics of the so-called springy billiards. These consist of a point particle of a small mass which bounces elastically in a billiard where one of the walls can move - the wall is of a finite mass and is attached to a spring. We propose a random process model for the slow wall dynamics and perform numerical experiments with the springy billiards themselves and the model. The experiments show that for such systems equilibration is always achieved; yet, in the adiabatic limit, the system equilibrates with a positive exponential rate only when the fast particle dynamics has more than one ergodic component for certain wall positions.

Exponential energy growth due to slow parameter oscillations in quantum mechanical systems

It is shown that a periodic emergence and destruction of an additional quantum number leads to an exponential growth of energy of a quantum mechanical system subjected to a slow periodic variation of parameters. The main example is given by systems (e.g., quantum billiards and quantum graphs) with periodically divided configuration space. In special cases, the process can also lead to a long period of cooling that precedes the acceleration, and to the desertion of the states with a particular value of the quantum number.

On homoclinic orbits to center manifolds of elliptic-hyperbolic equilibria in Hamiltonian systems

We consider a Hamiltonian system which has an elliptic-hyperbolic equilibrium with a homoclinic loop. We identify the set of orbits which are homoclinic to the center manifold of the equilibrium via a Lyapunov- Schmidt reduction procedure. This leads to the study of a singularity which inherits certain structure from the Hamiltonian nature of the system. Under non-degeneracy assumptions, we classify the possible Morse indices of this singularity, permitting a local description of the set of homoclinic orbits. We also consider the case of time-reversible Hamiltonian systems.

Degenerate behavior in non-hyperbolic semigroup actions on the interval: fast growth of periodic points and universal dynamics

We consider semigroup actions on the unit interval generated by strictly increasing $C^r$-maps. We assume that one of the generators has a pair of fixed points, one attracting and one repelling, and a heteroclinic orbit that connects the repeller and attractor, and the other generators form a robust blender, which can bring the points from a small neighborhood of the attractor to an arbitrarily small neighborhood of the repeller. This is a model setting for partially hyperbolic systems with one central direction. We show that, under additional conditions on the non-linearity and the Schwarzian derivative, the above semigroups exhibit, $C^r$-generically for any r, arbitrarily fast growth of the number of periodic points as a function of the period. We also show that a $C^r$-generic semigroup from the class under consideration supports an ultimately complicated behavior called universal dynamics.

Leaky Fermi accelerators

A Fermi accelerator is a billiard with oscillating walls. A leaky accelerator interacts with an environment of an ideal gas at equilibrium by exchange of particles through a small hole on its boundary. Such interaction may heat the gas: we estimate the net energy flow through the hole under the assumption that the particles inside the billiard do not collide with each other and remain in the accelerator for sufficiently long time. The heat production is found to depend strongly on the type of the Fermi accelerator. An ergodic accelerator, i.e. one which has a single ergodic component, produces a weaker energy flow than a multi-component accelerator. Specifically, in the ergodic case the energy gain is independent of the hole size, whereas in the multi-component case the energy flow may be significantly increased by shrinking the hole size.

Fast Fermi Acceleration and Entropy Growth

Fermi acceleration is the process of energy transfer from massive objects in slow motion to light objects that move fast. The model for such process is a time-dependent Hamiltonian system. As the parameters of the system change with time, the energy is no longer conserved, which makes the acceleration possible. One of the main problems is how to generate a sustained and robust energy growth. We show that the non-ergodicity of any chaotic Hamiltonian system must universally lead to the exponential growth of energy at a slow periodic variation of parameters. We build a model for this process in terms of a Geometric Brownian Motion with a positive drift and relate it to the entropy increase.

Arnold Diffusion in a priory chaotic Hamiltonian systems

We assume that a symplectic real-analytic map has an invariant normally hyperbolic cylinder and an associated transverse homoclinic cylinder. It is well known that such cylinder is preserved under small perturbations. We prove that for a generic real- analytic perturbation of this map the boundaries of the cylinder are connected by trajectories of the perturbed map.

Simple scenarios of onset of chaos in three-dimensional maps

We give a qualitative description of two main routes to chaos in three-dimensional maps. We discuss Shilnikov scenario of transition to spiral chaos and a scenario of transition to discrete Lorenz-like and figure-eight strange attractors. The theory is illustrated by numerical analysis of three-dimensional Henon-like maps and Poincare maps in models of nonholonomic mechanics.
