Reorganization asymmetry of electron transfer in ferroelectric media and principles of artificial photosynthesis

This study considers electronic transitions within donor-acceptor complexes dissolved in media with macroscopic polarization. The change of the polarizability of the donor-acceptor complex in the course of electronic transition couples to the reaction field of the polar environment and the electric field created by the macroscopic polarization. An analytical theory developed to describe this situation predicts a significant asymmetry of the reorganization energy between charge separation and charge recombination transitions. This result is proved by Monte Carlo simulations of a model polarizable diatomic dissolved in a ferroelectric fluid of soft dipolar spheres. The ratio of the reorganization energies for the forward and backward reactions up to a factor of 25 is obtained in the simulations. This result, as well as the effect of the macroscopic electric field, is discussed in application to the design of efficient photosynthetic devices.

Theory of solvation in polar nematics

We develop a linear response theory of solvation of ionic and dipolar solutes in anisotropic, axially symmetric polar solvents. The theory is applied to solvation in polar nematic liquid crystals. The formal theory constructs the solvation response function from projections of the solvent dipolar susceptibility on rotational invariants. These projections are obtained from Monte Carlo simulations of a fluid of dipolar spherocylinders which can exist both in the isotropic and nematic phase. Based on the properties of the solvent susceptibility from simulations and the formal solution, we have obtained a formula for the solvation free energy which incorporates experimentally available properties of nematics and the length of correlation between the dipoles in the liquid crystal. Illustrative calculations are presented for the Stokes shift and Stokes shift correlation function of coumarin-153 in 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) and 4,4-n-heptyl-cyanopiphenyl (7CB) solvents as a function of temperature in both the nematic and isotropic phase.

Reorganization energy of electron transfer at the solvent glass transition

We present a molecular-dynamics study of the solvent reorganization energy of electron transfer in supercooled water. We observe a sharp decrease of the reorganization energy at a temperature identified as the temperature of structural arrest due to cage effect as discussed by the mode coupling theory. Both the heat capacity and dielectric susceptibility of the pure water show sharp drops at about the same temperature. This temperature also marks the onset of the enhancement of translational diffusion relative to rotational relaxation signaling the break-down of the Stokes-Einstein relation. The change in the reorganization energy at the transition temperature reflects the dynamical arrest of the slow, collective relaxation of the solvent related to Debye relaxation of the solvent dipolar polarization.

Activation entropy of electron transfer reactions

We report microscopic calculations of free energies and entropies for intramolecular electron transfer reactions. The calculation algorithm combines the atomistic geometry and charge distribution of a molecular solute obtained from quantum calculations with the microscopic polarization response of a polar solvent expressed in terms of its polarization structure factors. The procedure is tested on a donor-acceptor complex in which ruthenium donor and cobalt acceptor sites are linked by a four-proline polypeptide. The reorganization energies and reaction energy gaps are calculated as a function of temperature by using structure factors obtained from our analytical procedure and from computer simulations. Good agreement between two procedures and with direct computer simulations of the reorganization energy is achieved. The microscopic algorithm is compared to the dielectric continuum calculations. We found that the strong dependence of the reorganization energy on the solvent refractive index predicted by continuum models is not supported by the microscopic theory. Also, the reorganization and overall solvation entropies are substantially larger in the microscopic theory compared to continuum models.

Two-Gaussian excitations model for the glass transition

We develop a modified "two-state" model with Gaussian widths for the site energies of both ground and excited states, consistent with expectations for a disordered system. The thermodynamic properties of the system are analyzed in configuration space and found to bridge the gap between simple two state models ("logarithmic" model in configuration space) and the random energy model ("Gaussian" model in configuration space). The Kauzmann singularity given by the random energy model remains for very fragile liquids but is suppressed or eliminated for stronger liquids. The sharp form of constant volume heat capacity found by recent simulations for binary mixed Lennard Jones and soft sphere systems is reproduced by the model, as is the excess entropy and heat capacity of a variety of laboratory systems, strong and fragile. The ideal glass in all cases has a narrow Gaussian, almost invariant among molecular and atomic glassformers, while the excited state Gaussian depends on the system and its width plays a role in the thermodynamic fragility. The model predicts the existence of first-order phase transition for fragile liquids.

Equilibrium solvation in quadrupolar solvents

We present a microscopic theory of equilibrium solvation in solvents with zero dipole moment and non-zero quadrupole moment (quadrupolar solvents). The theory is formulated in terms of autocorrelation functions of the quadrupolar polarization (structure factors). It can be therefore applied to an arbitrary dense quadrupolar solvent for which the structure factors are defined. We formulate a simple analytical perturbation treatment for the structure factors. The solute is described by coordinates, radii, and partial charges of constituent atoms. The theory is tested on Monte Carlo simulations of solvation in model quadrupolar solvents. It is also applied to the calculation of the activation barrier of electron transfer reactions in a cleft-shaped donor-acceptor complex dissolved in benzene with the structure factors of quadrupolar polarization obtained from Molecular Dynamics simulations.

Paraelectric and ferroelectric order in two-state dipolar fluids

Monte Carlo simulations are used to examine cooperative creation of polar state in fluids of two-state particles with nonzero dipole in the excited state. With lowering temperature such systems undergo a second order transition from nonpolar to polar, paraelectric phase. The transition is accompanied by a dielectric anomaly of polarization susceptibility increasing by three orders of magnitude. The paraelectric phase is then followed by formation of a nematic ferroelectric which further freezes into an fcc ferroelectric crystal by a first order transition. A mean-field model of phase transitions is discussed.
