A unified duality framework for barotropic, quantum and Korteweg fluids

We investigate a dual variational formulation, in the spirit of Brenier, for several compressible fluid models: the compressible barotropic Euler system, the quantum Euler system, and the Euler-Korteweg system. We identify a unified abstract framework encompassing all three systems, which enables a simultaneous analysis. By introducing time-adaptive weights, we establish the consistency of the duality scheme on large time intervals. We prove the existence of variational dual solutions to the corresponding Cauchy problems for continuous, vacuum-free initial data in spaces of finite Radon measures, and establish the absence of a duality gap. As an application, we formulate and prove a 'Dafermos principle' for these models: no subsolution can dissipate the total entropy earlier or at a faster rate than the corresponding strong solution on its interval of existence. We also discuss connections between our abstract consistency result and Brenier's shock-free substitutes for entropy solutions of Burgers' equation.

On the variational dual formulation of the Nash system and an adaptive convex gradient-flow approach to nonlinear PDEs

We investigate the influence of base states on the consistency of the dual variational formulation for quadratic systems of PDEs, which are not necessarily conservative (typical examples include the noise-free Nash system with a quadratic Hamiltonian and multiple players). We identify a sufficient condition under which consistency holds over large time intervals. In particular, in the single-player case, there exists a sequence of base states (each exhibiting full consistency) that converges in mean to zero. We also prove existence of variational dual solutions to the noise-free Nash system for arbitrary base states. Furthermore, we propose a scheme based on Hilbertian gradient flows that, starting from an arbitrary base state, generates a sequence of new base states that is expected to converge to a solution of the original PDE.

Dafermos' principle and Brenier's duality scheme for defocusing dispersive equations

We discover an abstract structure behind several nonlinear dispersive equations (including the NLS, NLKG and GKdV equations with generic defocusing power-law nonlinearities) that is reminiscent of hyperbolic conservation laws. The underlying abstract problem admits an "entropy" that is formally conserved. The entropy is determined by a strictly convex function that naturally generates an anisotropic Orlicz space. For such problems, we introduce the dual matrix-valued variational formulation in the spirit of [Y. Brenier. Comm. Math. Phys. (2018) 364(2) 579-605]. Employing time-adaptive weights, we are able to prove consistency of the duality scheme on large time intervals. We also prove solvability of the dual problem in the corresponding anisotropic Orlicz spaces. As an application, we show that no subsolution of the PDEs that fit into our framework is able to dissipate the total entropy earlier or faster than the strong solution on the interval of existence of the latter. This result (we call it Dafermos' principle) is new even for "isotropic" problems such as the incompressible Euler system.

The dynamical Schrödinger problem in abstract metric spaces

In this paper we introduce the dynamical Schrödinger problem on abstract metric spaces, defined for a wide class of entropy and Fisher information functionals. Under very mild assumptions we prove a generic Gamma-convergence result towards the geodesic problem as the noise parameter $\varepsilon\downarrow 0$. We also investigate the connection with geodesic convexity of the driving entropy, and study the dependence of the entropic cost on the parameter $\varepsilon$. Some examples and applications are discussed.

Overdamped Dynamics of a Falling Inextensible Network: Existence of Solutions

We study the equations of overdamped motion of an inextensible triod with three fixed ends and a free junction under the action of gravity. The problem can be expressed as a system of PDE that involves unknown Lagrange multipliers and non-standard boundary conditions related to the freely moving junction. It can also be formally interpreted as a gradient flow of the potential energy on a certain submanifold of the Otto-Wasserstein space of probability measures. We prove global existence of generalized solutions to this problem.

Schrödinger encounters Fisher and Rao: a survey

In this short note we review the dynamical Schrödinger problem on the non-commutative Fisher-Rao space of positive semi-definite matrix-valued measures. The presentation is meant to be self-contained, and we discuss in particular connections with Gaussian optimal transport, entropy, and quantum Fisher information.

Partial differential equations with quadratic nonlinearities viewed as matrix-valued optimal ballistic transport problems

We study a rather general class of optimal "ballistic" transport problems for matrix-valued measures. These problems naturally arise, in the spirit of \emph{Y. Brenier. Comm. Math. Phys. (2018) 364(2) 579-605}, from a certain dual formulation of nonlinear evolutionary equations with a particular quadratic structure reminiscent both of the incompressible Euler equation and of the quadratic Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The examples include the ideal incompressible MHD, the template matching equation, the multidimensional Camassa-Holm (also known as the Hdiv geodesic equation), EPDiff, Euler-alpha, KdV and Zakharov-Kuznetsov equations, the equations of motion for the incompressible isotropic elastic fluid and for the damping-free Maxwell's fluid. We prove the existence of the solutions to the optimal "ballistic" transport problems. For formally conservative problems, such as the above mentioned examples, a solution to the dual problem determines a "time-noisy" version of the solution to the original problem, and the latter one may be retrieved by time-averaging. This yields the existence of a new type of absolutely continuous in time generalized solutions to the initial-value problems for the above mentioned PDE. We also establish a sharp upper bound on the optimal value of the dual problem, and explore the weak-strong uniqueness issue.

Convex functions defined on metric spaces are pulled back to subharmonic ones by harmonic maps

If $u : Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d \to {\rm X}$ is a harmonic map valued in a metric space ${\rm X}$ and ${\sf E} : {\rm X} \to \mathbb{R}$ is a convex function, in the sense that it generates an ${\rm EVI}_0$-gradient flow, we prove that the pullback ${\sf E} \circ u : Ω\to \mathbb{R}$ is subharmonic. This property was known in the smooth Riemannian manifold setting or with curvature restrictions on ${\rm X}$, while we prove it here in full generality. In addition, we establish generalized maximum principles, in the sense that the $L^q$ norm of ${\sf E} \circ u$ on $\partial Ω$ controls the $L^p$ norm of ${\sf E} \circ u$ in $Ω$ for some well-chosen exponents $p \geq q$, including the case $p=q=+\infty$. In particular, our results apply when ${\sf E}$ is a geodesically convex entropy over the Wasserstein space, and thus settle some conjectures of Y. The Schrödinger problem on the non-commutative Fisher-Rao space

We present a self-contained and comprehensive study of the Fisher-Rao space of matrix-valued non-commutative probability measures, and of the related Hellinger space. Our non-commutative Fisher-Rao space is a natural generalization of the classical commutative Fisher-Rao space of probability measures and of the Bures-Wasserstein space of Hermitian positive-definite matrices. We introduce and justify a canonical entropy on the non-commutative Fisher-Rao space, which differs from the von Neumann entropy. We consequently derive the analogues of the heat flow, of the Fisher information, and of the dynamical Schrödinger problem. We show the $Γ$-convergence of the $ε$-Schrödinger problem towards the geodesic problem for the Fisher-Rao space, and, as a byproduct, the strict geodesic convexity of the entropy.

Nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations with reaction as gradient flows of the free energy

We interpret a class of nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations with reaction as gradient flows over the space of Radon measures equipped with the recently introduced Hellinger-Kantorovich distance. The driving entropy of the gradient flow is not assumed to be geodesically convex or semi-convex. We prove new generalized dissipation inequalities, which allow us to control the relative entropy by its production. We establish the entropic exponential convergence of the trajectories of the flow to the equilibrium. Along with other applications, this result has an ecological interpretation as a trend to the ideal free distribution for a class of fitness-driven models of population dynamics. Our existence theorem for weak solutions under mild assumptions on the nonlinearity is new even in the absence of the reaction term.

On optimal transport of matrix-valued measures

We suggest a new way of defining optimal transport of positive-semidefinite matrix-valued measures. It is inspired by a recent rendering of the incompressible Euler equations and related conservative systems as concave maximization problems. The main object of our attention is the Kantorovich-Bures metric space, which is a matricial analogue of the Wasserstein and Hellinger-Kantorovich metric spaces. We establish some topological, metric and geometric properties of this space, which includes the existence of the optimal transportation path.

Convex Sobolev inequalities related to unbalanced optimal transport

We study the behaviour of various Lyapunov functionals (relative entropies) along the solutions of a family of nonlinear drift-diffusion-reaction equations coming from statistical mechanics and population dynamics. These equations can be viewed as gradient flows over the space of Radon measures equipped with the Hellinger-Kantorovich distance. The driving functionals of the gradient flows are not assumed to be geodesically convex or semi-convex. We prove new isoperimetric-type functional inequalities, allowing us to control the relative entropies by their productions, which yields the exponential decay of the relative entropies.

Spherical Hellinger-Kantorovich gradient flows

We study nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations of Fokker-Planck type which can be viewed as gradient flows with respect to the recently introduced spherical Hellinger-Kantorovich distance. The driving entropy is not assumed to be geodesically convex. We prove solvability of the problem and the entropy-entropy production inequality, which implies exponential convergence to the equilibrium. As a corollary, we obtain some related results for the Wasserstein gradient flows. We also deduce transportation inequalities in the spirit of Talagrand, Otto and Villani for the spherical and conic Hellinger-Kantorovich distances.

The gradient flow of the potential energy on the space of arcs

We study the gradient flow of the potential energy on the infinite-dimensional Riemannian manifold of spatial curves parametrized by the arc length, which models overdamped motion of a falling inextensible string. We prove existence of generalized solutions to the corresponding nonlinear evolutionary PDE and their exponential decay to the equilibrium. We also observe that the system admits solutions backwards in time, which leads to non-uniqueness of trajectories.

Uniformly compressing mean curvature flow

Michor and Mumford showed that the mean curvature flow is a gradient flow on a Riemannian structure with a degenerate geodesic distance. It is also known to destroy the uniform density of gridpoints on the evolving surfaces. We introduce a related geometric flow which is free of these drawbacks. Our flow can be viewed as a formal gradient flow on a certain submanifold of the Wasserstein space of probability measures endowed with Otto's Riemannian structure. We obtain a number of analytic results concerning well-posedness and long-time stability which are however restricted to the 1D case of evolution of loops.

A new optimal transport distance on the space of finite Radon measures

We introduce a new optimal transport distance between nonnegative finite Radon measures with possibly different masses. The construction is based on non-conservative continuity equations and a corresponding modified Benamou-Brenier formula. We establish various topological and geometrical properties of the resulting metric space, derive some formal Riemannian structure, and develop differential calculus following F. Otto's approach. Finally, we apply these ideas to identify an ideal free distribution model of population dynamics as a gradient flow and obtain new long-time convergence results.

A fitness-driven cross-diffusion system from polulation dynamics as a gradient flow

We consider a fitness-driven model of dispersal of $N$ interacting populations, which was previously studied merely in the case $N=1$. Based on some optimal transport distance recently introduced, we identify the model as a gradient flow in the metric space of Radon measures. We prove existence of global non-negative weak solutions to the corresponding system of parabolic PDEs, which involves degenerate cross-diffusion. Under some additional hypotheses and using a new multicomponent Poincaré-Beckner functional inequality, we show that the solutions converge exponentially to an ideal free distribution in the long time regime.

Generalized solutions for inextensible string equations

We study the system of equations of motion for inextensible strings. This system possesses many internal symmetries, and is related to discontinuous systems of conservation laws and the total variation wave equation. We prove existence of generalized Young measure solutions with non-negative tension after transforming the problem into a system of conservation laws and approximating it with a regularized system for which we obtain uniform estimates of the energy and the tension. We also discuss sufficient conditions for non-negativity of the tension for strong solutions.
