Topological, metric and fractal properties of one family of self-similar sets

Depending on a natural parameter $l$, we study the topological, metric, and fractal properties of the homogeneous self-similar set $$K_{l}=\left\{\sum_{i=1}^{\infty} \frac{\varepsilon_i}{(2l+2)^i} : (\varepsilon_i) \in \{0, 2, 4, \dots, 2l, 2l+1, 2l+3, \dots, 4l+1 \}^{\mathbb{N}} \right\}.$$ In particular, we prove that $K_l$ is a Cantorval, a perfect set on the real line with a non-empty interior and fractal boundary. Additionally, we show that $K_l$ has Lebesgue measure $1$ and that its boundary has Hausdorff dimension $\log(2l+1)/\log(2l+2)$.

From Dimension Drop to Aperiodic Order

We consider the parametrised family of sets $$ E(x,y)=\left\{\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{\varepsilon_n}{4^n}: (\varepsilon_n) \in \{0,x,y,x+y\}^{\mathbb{N}}\right\} $$ for $(x,y) \in \mathbb{N}^2$. This family can be viewed through three lenses: (a) as homogeneous self-similar sets; (b) as achievement sets of bi-geometric series; or (c) as the set of `rational' orthogonal projections of the four-corner Cantor set. We synthesise these three perspectives to obtain a complete topological classification of $E(x,y)$ for $(x,y) \in \mathbb{N}^2$. Next, we collapse this topological classification to a binary one according to whether or not $E(x,y)$ has interior. When this binary classification is visualised, it reveals a two-colour tiling $T$ of the lattice $\mathbb N^2$, which, despite being visibly structured, turns out to be aperiodic; indeed, we prove it has no non-trivial translational symmetries. Due to the rigidity of our model, this same binary classification simultaneously captures several dichotomies. Most notably, when the family $\{E(x,y)\}_{(x,y) \in \mathbb{N}^2}$ is viewed through the theory of self-similar sets, $T$ can be seen to describe the emergence of dimension drop within the family. Finally we examine the mechanism underlying the tiling's aperiodic order. By considering the number-theoretic properties of the tiling, we characterise its substitution structure, and discover that $T$ is a factor of a substitution tiling on four ``hidden'' arithmetically defined states.

Infinite Bernoulli convolutions generated by multigeometric series and their properties

The paper is devoted to infinite Bernoulli convolutions generated by positive multigeometric series and to probability distributions of random variables whose digits in an even integer base-$s$ expansion with two redundant digits form a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables. The main objects of the article are random variables: $ξ=\sum\limits_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{ξ_n}{s^n}$, where $(ξ_n)$ is a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables taking values $0, 1, 2, \dots, s-1, s, s+1$ with probabilities $p_0$, $p_1$, $p_2, \dots, p_{s-1}, p_s, p_{s+1}$ respectively $(3 0$ and $q_1=1-q_0>0$. We study conditions under which the above random variables have absolutely continuous or singular distributions as well as topological, metric, and fractal properties of their supports. The main focus is on the case where the spectrum is a Cantorval.

On the Lebesgue measure of one generalised set of subsums of geometric series

In the present paper, we study a set that can be treated as a generalised set of subsums for a geometric series. This object was discovered independently in various mathematical aspects. For instance, it is closely related to various systems of representation of real numbers. The main object of this paper was particularly studied by R. Kenyon, who brought up a question about the Lebesgue measure of the set and conjectured that it is positive. Further, Z. Nitecki confirmed the hypothesis by using nontrivial topological techniques. However, the aforementioned result is quite limited, as this particular case should satisfy a rigid condition of homogeneity. Despite the limited progress, the problem remained understudied in a general framework.

Fractal analysis of Guthrie-Nymann's set and its generalisations

In this paper, we study the fractal properties of the boundary of the Cantorval connected with Guthrie-Nymann's series. In particular, we prove that such a Cantorval can be represented as a union of open intervals and a Cantor set having zero Lebesgue measure and a fractional Hausdorff dimension. Moreover, we extend the result to a countable family of Cantorvals with a similar structure.

The achievement set of generalized multigeometric sequences

We study the topology of all possible subsums of the generalized multigeometric series $k_1f(x)+k_2f(x)+\dots+k_mf(x)+\dots + k_1f(x^n)+\dots+k_mf(x^n)+\dots,$ where $k_1, k_2, \dots, k_m$ are fixed positive real numbers and $f$ runs along a certain class of non-negative functions on the unit interval. We detect particular regions of this interval for which this achievement set is, respectively, a compact interval, a Cantor set and a Cantorval.

Cantorvals as sets of subsums for a series connected with trigonometric functions

We study properties of the set of subsums for a convergent series $ k_1 \sin x + \dots + k_m \sin x +\dots + k_1\sin x^n +\dots + k_m \sin x^n + \dots $, where $k_1, k_2, k_3,\dots,k_m$ are fixed positive integers and $0<x<1$. Depends on parameter $x$ this set can be a finite union of closed intervals or Cantor-type set or even Cantorval.
