Quadratic Programming over Linearly Ordered Fields: Decidability and Attainment of Optimal Solutions

Classical existence theorems and solution methods for quadratic programming traditionally rely on the analytical properties of real numbers, specifically compactness and completeness. These tools are unavailable in general linearly ordered fields, such as the field of rational numbers or non-Archimedean structures, rendering standard analytical proofs insufficient in these general algebraic settings. In this paper, we establish a unified algebraic framework for the decidability of indefinite quadratic programming subject to linear constraints over general linearly ordered fields. We prove a generalized Eaves' theorem, demonstrating that if a quadratic function -- encompassing convex, non-convex, or degenerate (linear) cases -- is bounded from below on a polyhedron, the minimum is attained within the field itself, regardless of topological completeness. Our approach replaces classical analytical arguments with algebraic induction on dimension and polyhedral decomposition. Based on this foundation, we propose an exact, deterministic algorithm within the Blum--Shub--Smale model of computation that decides boundedness and computes a global minimizer using only field operations. We show that the problem is solvable in finite time via a recursive search over orthant-restricted facets. Finally, we note that linearly constrained quadratic programming represents the maximal class of polynomial optimization problems where exact solutions are structurally guaranteed within the original field, thereby demarcating the algebraic boundary of exact optimization over ordered structures.

Generation of Perfectly Achromatic Optical Vortices Using a Compensated Tandem Twisted Nematic Cell

The generation of white optical vortices is currently constrained by intrinsic trade-offs between spectral bandwidth, conversion efficiency, and temporal pulse integrity in conventional diffractive and geometric-phase approaches. In this work, we theoretically investigate a compensated tandem crossed twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal architecture that overcomes these fundamental limitations. By developing a rigorous Jones matrix model and defining specific figures of merit for chromatic fidelity, we analyze the impact of manufacturing imperfections and non-adiabatic waveguiding (deviations from the Mauguin regime) on the device performance. We propose and evaluate three distinct compensation strategies, ranging from optimized passive designs for specific manufacturing tolerances to a robust active compensation scheme utilizing a tunable retarder. Our analysis demonstrates that the active approach effectively nullifies parasitic amplitude modulation, enabling the generation of perfectly achromatic vortices with high phase purity across an arbitrary bandwidth. This establishes the compensated tandem TN cell as a superior and versatile platform for high-fidelity white-light singular optics.

Optical trapping by Laguerre-Gaussian beams: Symmetries, stability and equilibria

We use the T-matrix formalism in combination with the method of far-field matching to evaluate the optical force exerted by Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) light beams on a spherical (Mie) particle. For both non-vortex and optical vortex LG beams, the theoretical results are used to analyze the optical-force-induced dynamics of the scatterer near the trapping points represented by the equilibrium (zero-force) positions. The regimes of linearized dynamics are described in terms of the stiffness matrix spectrum and the damping constant of the ambient medium. For the purely azimuthal LG beams, the dynamics is found to be locally non-conservative and is characterized by the presence of conditionally stable equilibria (unstable zero-force points that can be stabilized by the ambient damping). The effects related to the Mie resonances that under certain conditions manifest themselves as the points changing the trapping properties of the particles are discussed.

Mie scattering of Laguerre-Gaussian beams: photonic nanojets and near-field optical vortices

We study Mie scattering of Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) light beams remodelled using the method of far-field matching. The theoretical results are used to analyze the optical field in the near-field region for purely azimuthal LG beams characterized by a nonzero azimuthal mode number $m_{LG}$. The mode number $m_{LG}$ is found to have a profound effect on the morphology of photonic nanojets and the near-field structure of optical vortices associated with the components of the electric field.
