Abstract Fractional Cauchy Problem: Existence of Propagators and Inhomogeneous Solution Representation

We consider a Cauchy problem for the inhomogeneous differential equation given in terms of an unbounded linear operator $A$ and the Caputo fractional derivative of order $α\in (0, 2)$ in time. The previously known representation of the mild solution to such a problem does not have a conventional variation-of-constants like form, with the propagator derived from the associated homogeneous problem. Instead, it relies on the existence of two propagators with different analytical properties. This fact limits theoretical and especially numerical applicability of the existing solution representation. Here, we propose an alternative representation of the mild solution to the given problem, that consolidates the solution formulas for sub-parabolic, parabolic and sub-hyperbolic equations with a positive sectorial operator $A$ and non-zero initial data. The new representation is solely based on the propagator of the homogeneous problem and, therefore, can be considered as a more natural fractional extension of the solution to the classical parabolic Cauchy problem. By exploiting a trade-off between the regularity assumptions on the initial data in terms of the fractional powers of $A$ and the regularity assumptions on the right-hand side in time, we show that the proposed solution formula is strongly convergent for $t \geq 0$ under considerably weaker assumptions compared to the standard results from the literature. Crucially, the achieved relaxation of space regularity assumptions ensures that the new solution representation is practically feasible for any $α\in (0, 2)$ and is amenable to the numerical evaluation using uniformly accurate quadrature-based algorithms.

Subordination based approximation of Caputo fractional propagator and related numerical methods

In this work, we propose an exponentially convergent numerical method for the Caputo fractional propagator $S_α(t)$ and the associated mild solution of the Cauchy problem with time-independent sectorial operator coefficient $A$ and Caputo fractional derivative of order $α\in (0,2)$ in time. The proposed methods are constructed by generalizing the earlier developed approximation of $S_α(t)$ with help of the subordination principle. Such technique permits us to eliminate the dependence of the main part of error estimate on $α$, while preserving other computationally relevant properties of the original approximation: native support for multilevel parallelism, the ability to handle initial data with minimal spatial smoothness, and stable exponential convergence for all $t \in [0, T]$. Ultimately, the use of subordination leads to a significant improvement of the method's convergence behavior, particularly for small $α< 0.5$, and opens up further opportunities for efficient data reuse. To validate theoretical results, we consider applications of the developed methods to the direct problem of solution approximation, as well as to the inverse problem of fractional order identification.

Exponentially Convergent Numerical Method for Abstract Cauchy Problem with Fractional Derivative of Caputo Type

We present an exponentially convergent numerical method to approximate the solution of the Cauchy problem for the inhomogeneous fractional differential equation with an unbounded operator coefficient and Caputo fractional derivative in time. The numerical method is based on the newly obtained solution formula that consolidates the mild solution representations of sub-parabolic, parabolic and sub-hyperbolic equations with sectorial operator coefficient $A$ and non-zero initial data. The involved integral operators are approximated using the sinc-quadrature formulas that are tailored to the spectral parameters of $A$, fractional order $α$ and the smoothness of the first initial condition, as well as to the properties of the equation's right-hand side $f(t)$. The resulting method possesses exponential convergence for positive sectorial $A$, any finite $t$, including $t = 0$ and the whole range $α\in (0,2)$. It is suitable for a practically important case, when no knowledge of $f(t)$ is available outside the considered interval $t \in [0, T]$. The algorithm of the method is capable of multi-level parallelism. We provide numerical examples that confirm the theoretical error estimates.

Numerical method for abstract Cauchy problem with nonlinear nonlocal condition

Problem for the first order differential equation with an unbounded operator coefficient in Banach space and nonlinear nonlocal condition is considered. A numerical method is proposed and justified for the solution of this problem under assumptions that the mentioned operator coefficient $A$ is strongly positive and some existence and uniqueness conditions are fulfilled. The method is based on the reduction of the given problem to an abstract Hammerstein equation. The later one is discretized by collocation and then solved via the fixed-point iteration method. Each iteration of the method involves Sinc-based numerical evaluation of the operator exponential represented by a Dunford-Cauchy integral along hyperbola enveloping the spectrum of $A$.

A Lattice Boltzmann Method for Non-Newtonian Blood Flow in Coiled Intracranial Aneurysms

Intracranial aneurysms are the leading cause of hemorrhagic stroke. One of the established treatment approaches is the embolization induced by coil insertion. However, the prediction of treatment and subsequent changed flow characteristics in the aneurysm is still an open problem. In this work, we present an approach based on a patient-specific geometry and parameters including a coil representation as inhomogeneous porous medium. The model consists of the volume-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for a non-Newtonian blood rheology. We solve these equations using a problem-adapted lattice Boltzmann method and present a comparison between fully-resolved and volume-averaged simulations. The results indicate the validity of the model. Overall, this workflow allows for patient specific assessment of the flow due to potential treatment.

Sinc approximation of algebraically decaying functions

An extension of sinc interpolation on $\mathbb{R}$ to the class of algebraically decaying functions is developed in the paper. Similarly to the classical sinc interpolation we establish two types of error estimates. First covers a wider class of functions with the algebraic order of decay on $\mathbb{R}$. The second type of error estimates governs the case when the order of function's decay can be estimated everywhere in the horizontal strip of complex plane around $\mathbb{R}$. The numerical examples are provided.

Parallel numerical method for nonlocal-in-time Schrödinger equation

We present a new parallel numerical method for solving the non-stationary Schrödinger equation with linear nonlocal condition and time-dependent potential which does not commute with the stationary part of the Hamiltonian. The given problem is discretized in-time using a polynomial-based collocation scheme. We establish the conditions on the existence of solution to the discretized problem, estimate the accuracy of the discretized solution and propose the method how this solution can be approximately found in an efficient parallel manner.

Linear nonlocal problem for the abstract time-dependent non-homogeneous Schrödinger equation

A nonlocal-in-time problem for the abstract Schrödinger equation is considered. By exploiting the linear nature of nonlocal condition we derive an exact representation of the solution operator under assumptions that the spectrum of Hamiltonian is contained in the horizontal strip of complex plane. The derived representation permits us to establish the necessary and sufficient conditions for the problem's well-posedness and the existence of its mild, strong solutions. Furthermore, we present new sufficient conditions for the existence of solution which extend the available results to the case when some nonlocal parameters are unbounded. Two examples are provided.

The Luttinger-Kohn theory for multiband Hamiltonians: A revision of ellipticity requirements

Modern applications require a robust and theoretically solid tool for the realistic modeling of electronic states in low dimensional nanostructures. The $k \cdot p$ theory has fruitfully served this role for the long time since its establishment. During the last three decades several problems have been detected in connection with the application of the $k \cdot p$ approach to such nanostructures. These problems are closely related to the violation of the ellipticity conditions for the underlying model, the fact that has been largely overlooked in the literature. We derive ellipticity conditions for $6 \times 6$, $8\times 8$ and $14 \times 14$ Hamiltonians obtained by the application of Luttinger-Kohn theory to the bulk zinc blende (ZB) crystals, and demonstrate that the corresponding models are non-elliptic for many common crystalline materials. With the aim to obtain the admissible (in terms of ellipticity) parameters, we further develop and justify a parameter rescaling procedure for $8\times 8$ Hamiltonians. This allows us to calculate the admissible parameter sets for GaAs, AlAs, InAs, GaP, AlP, InP, GaSb, AlSb, InSb, GaN, AlN, InN. The newly obtained parameters are then optimized in terms of the bandstructure fit by changing the value of the inversion asymmetry parameter $B$ that is proved to be essential for ellipticity of $8\times 8$ Hamiltonian. The consecutive analysis, performed here for all mentioned $k \cdot p$ Hamiltonians, indicates the connection between the lack of ellipticity and perturbative terms describing the influence of out-of-basis bands on the structure of the Hamiltonian. This enables us to quantify the limits of models' applicability material-wise and to suggest a possible unification of two different $14 \times 14$ models, analysed in this work.

Existence of the solution to a nonlocal-in-time evolutional problem

This work is devoted to the study of a nonlocal-in-time evolutional problem for the first order differential equation in Banach space. Our primary approach, although stems from the convenient technique based on the reduction of a nonlocal problem to its classical initial value analogue, uses more advanced analysis. That is a validation of the correctness in definition of the general solution representation via the Dunford-Cauchy formula. Such approach allows us to reduce the given existence problem to the problem of locating zeros of a certain entire function. It results in the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a generalized (mild) solution to the given nonlocal problem. Aside of that we also present new sufficient conditions which in the majority of cases generalize existing results.

Multiband Hamiltonians of the Luttinger-Kohn Theory and Ellipticity Requirements

Modern applications require a robust and theoretically strong tool for the realistic modeling of electronic states in low dimensional nanostructures. The $k \cdot p$ theory has fruitfully served this role for the long time since its creation. During last two decades several problems have been detected in connection with the application of the $k \cdot p$ approach to such nanostructures. These problems are closely related to the violation of the ellipticity conditions for the underlying system, the fact that until recently has been largely overlooked. We demonstrate that in many cases the models derived by a formal application of the Luttinger-Kohn theory fail to satisfy the ellipticity requirements. The detailed analysis, presented here on an example of the $6 \times 6$ Hamiltonians, shows that this failure has a strong impact on the physically important properties conventionally studied with these models.

Fast convergent method for the $m$-point problem in Banach space

The $m$-point nonlocal problem for the first order differential equation with an operator coefficient in a Banach space $X$ is considered. An exponentially convergent algorithm is proposed and justified provided that the operator coefficient $A$ is strongly positive and some existence and uniqueness conditions are fulfilled. This algorithm is based on representations of operator functions by a Dunford-Cauchy integral along a hyperbola enveloping the spectrum of $A$ and on the proper quadratures involving short sums of resolvents. The efficiency of the proposed algorithms is demonstrated by numerical examples.
