Implications of local parity breaking in heavy ion collisions

Recent data on dilepton production in heavy ion collisions revealed an abnormal excess in the region of invariant masses below 1 GeV. Our proposal is the creation of a slowly varying time-dependent pseudoscalar condensate within the hot nuclear fireball that comes from the very collision. The local parity breaking effect that immediately arises substantially modifies the vector meson properties leading to an excess of lepton pairs that could be a part of the explanation for the observed abnormal dilepton yield.

An effective theory for QCD with an axial chemical potential

We consider the low energy realization of QCD in terms of meson fields when an axial chemical potential is present; a situation that may be relevant in heavy ion collisions. We shall demonstrate that the presence of an axial charge constitutes an explicit source of parity breaking. The eigenstates of strong interactions do not have a definite parity and interactions that would otherwise be forbidden compete with the familiar ones. In this work, we first focus on scalars and pseudoscalars that are described by a generalized linear sigma model; and next, we give some hints on how the Vector Meson Dominance model describes the vector sector.

Radiative corrections to WL WL scattering in composite Higgs models

The scattering of longitudinally polarized electroweak bosons is likely to play an important role in the elucidation of the fundamental nature of the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking sector and in determining the Higgs interactions with this sector. In this paper, by making use of the Equivalence Theorem, we determine the renormalization properties of the electroweak effective theory parameters in a model with generic Higgs couplings to the W and Z bosons. When the couplings between the Higgs and the electroweak gauge bosons deviate from their Standard Model values, additional counterterms of O(p^4) in the usual chiral counting are required. We also determine in the same approximation the full radiative corrections to the WL WL->ZL ZL process in this type of models. Assuming custodial invariance, all the related processes can be easily derived from this amplitude.

An effective QCD Lagrangian in the presence of an axial chemical potential

We consider the low energy realization of QCD in terms of mesons when an axial chemical potential is present; a situation that may be relevant in heavy ion collisions. We shall demonstrate that the presence of an axial charge has profound consequences on meson physics. The most notorious effect is the appearance of an explicit source of parity breaking. The eigenstates of strong interactions do not have a definite parity and interactions that would otherwise be forbidden compete with the familiar ones. In this work we focus on scalars and pseudoscalars that are described by a generalized linear sigma model. We comment briefly on the screening role of axial vectors in formation of effective axial charge and on the possible experimental relevance of our results, whose consequences may have been already seen at RHIC.

Photon propagation in a cold axion background with and without magnetic field

A cold relic axion condensate resulting from vacuum misalignment in the early universe oscillates with a frequency m, where m is the axion mass. We determine the properties of photons propagating in a simplified version of such a background where the sinusoidal variation is replaced by a square wave profile. We prove that previous results that indicated that charged particles moving fast in such a background radiate, originally derived assuming that all momenta involved were much larger than m, hold for long wavelengths too. We also analyze in detail how the introduction of a magnetic field changes the properties of photon propagation in such a medium. We briefly comment on possible astrophysical implications of these results.

Abnormal dilepton yield from parity breaking in dense nuclear matter

At finite density parity can be spontaneously broken in strong interactions with far reaching implications. In particular, a time-dependent pseudoscalar background would modify QED by adding a Chern-Simons term to the lagrangian. As a striking consequence we propose a novel explanation for the dilepton excess observed in heavy ion collisions at low invariant masses. The presence of local parity breaking due to a time-dependent pseudoscalar condensate substantially modifies the dispersion relation of photons and vector mesons propagating in such a medium, changing the $ρ$ spectral function and resulting in a potentially large excess of dileptons with respect to the predictions based in a `cocktail' of known processes.

Abnormal dilepton yield from local parity breaking in heavy-ion collisions

We propose a novel explanation for the dilepton excess observed in heavy ion collisions at invariant masses below 1 GeV. We argue that the presence of local parity breaking due to a time-dependent isosinglet and/or isotriplet pseudoscalar condensate substantially modifies the dispersion relation of photons and vector mesons propagating in such a medium, changing the ρ~ spectral function and resulting in a potentially large excess of e+e- and μ+μ- with respect to the theoretical predictions based in a 'cocktail' of known hadronic processes. Possible signatures to prove or disprove this effect are discussed.

Axions and Cosmic Rays

We investigate the propagation of a charged particle in a spatially constant but time dependent pseudoscalar background. Physically this pseudoscalar background could be provided by a relic axion density. The background leads to an explicit breaking of Lorentz invariance; as a consequence processes such as $p\to p γ$ or $e\to e γ$ are possible within some kinematical constraints. The phenomenon is described by the QED lagrangian extended with a Chern-Simons term that contains a 4-vector which characterizes the breaking of Lorentz invariance induced by the time-dependent background. While the radiation induced (similar to the Cherenkov effect) is too small to influence the propagation of cosmic rays in a significant way, the hypothetical detection of the photons radiated by high energy cosmic rays via this mechanism would provide an indirect way of verifying the cosmological relevance of axions. We discuss on the order of magnitude of the effect.

Anomalous positron excess from Lorentz-violating QED

We entertain the idea that a suitable background of cold (very low momentum) pseudoscalar particles or condensate, may trigger a background that effectively generates Lorentz-invariance violation. This aether-like background induces a Chern-Simons modification of QED. Physics is different in different frames and, in the rest frame of the pseudoscalar background, high momentum photons can decay into pairs. The threshold for such decay depends quadratically on the rest mass of the particles. This mechanism could explain in a natural way why antiprotons are absent in recent cosmic ray measurements. A similar signal could be used as a probe of pseudoscalar condensation in heavy ion collisions.

Vector meson decays from the Extended Chiral Quark Model

We derive the the effective lagrangian that describes the interactions among vector, axial-vector mesons and pseudoscalars starting from the extended chiral quark model (ECQM). The results for the low-energy constants of this effective lagrangian have a parametric resemblance with existing predictions based on the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model (except for some overall signs that we correct), but are numerically different. Therefore a precise measurement of these decay constants can shed some light on the way chiral symmetry breaking is modelled in QCD. Although most of the constants are poorly measured, comparison with phenomenology allows us to determine one of the parameters of the ECQM that could not be fully determined in previous analyses.

Compact lattice U(1) and Seiberg-Witten duality

Simulations in compact U(1) lattice gauge theory in 4D show now beyond any reasonable doubts that the phase transition separating the Coulomb from the confined phase is of first order, albeit a very weak one. This settles the issue from the numerical side. On the analytical side, it was suggested some time ago, based on the qualitative analogy between the phase diagram of such a model and the one of scalar QED obtained by soft breaking the N=2 Seiberg-Witten model down to N=0, that the phase transition should be of second order. In this work we take a fresh look at this issue and show that a proper implementation of the Seiberg-Witten model below the supersymmetry breaking scale requires considering some new radiative corrections. Through the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism this turns the second order transition into a weakly first order one, in agreement with the numerical results. We comment on several other aspects of this continuum model.

Wave function and CKM renormalization

In this presentation we clarify some aspects of the LSZ formalism and wave function renormalization for unstable particles in the presence of electroweak interactions when mixing and CP violation are considered. We also analyze the renormalization of the CKM mixing matrix which is closely related to wave function renormalization. The effects due to the electroweak radiative corrections that are described in this work are small, but they will need to be considered when the precision in the measurement of the charged current sector couplings reaches the 1% level. The work presented here is done in collaboration with Julian Manzano and Pere Talavera.

The Effective Electroweak Chiral Lagrangian: The Matter Sector

We parametrize in a model-independent way possible departures from the minimal Standard Model predictions in the matter sector. We only assume the symmetry breaking pattern of the Standard Model and that new particles are sufficiently heavy so that the symmetry is non-linearly realized. Models with dynamical symmetry breaking are generically of this type. We review in the effective theory language to what extent the simplest models of dynamical breaking are actually constrained and the assumptions going into the comparison with experiment. Dynamical symmetry breaking models can be approximated at intermediate energies by four-fermion operators. We present a complete classification of the latter when new particles appear in the usual representations of the $SU(2)_L\times SU(3)_c$ group as well as a partial classification in the general case. We discuss the accuracy of the four-fermion description by matching to a simple `fundamental' theory. The coefficients of the effective lagrangian in the matter sector for dynamical symmetry breaking models (expressed in terms of the coefficients of the four-quark operators) are then compared to those of models with elementary scalars (such as the minimal Standard Model). Contrary to a somewhat widespread belief, we see that the sign of the vertex corrections is not fixed in dynamical symmetry breaking models. This work provides the theoretical tools required to analyze, in a rather general setting, constraints on the matter sector of the Standard Model.

U(1) lattice gauge theory and N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

We discuss the physics of four-dimensional compact U(1) lattice gauge theory from the point of view of softly broken N=2 supersymmetric SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. We provide arguments in favor of (pseudo-)critical mass exponents 1/3, 5/11 and 1/2, in agreement with the values observed in the computer simulations. We also show that the J^{CP} assignment of some of the lowest lying states can be naturally explained.
