Generating gaussian pseudorandom noise with binary sequences

Gaussian random number generators attract a widespread interest due to their applications in several fields. Important requirements include easy implementation, tail accuracy, and, finally, a flat spectrum. In this work, we study the applicability of uniform pseudorandom binary generators in combination with the Central Limit Theorem to propose an easy to implement, efficient and flexible algorithm that leverages the properties of the pseudorandom binary generator used as an input, specially with respect to the correlation measure of higher order, to guarantee the quality of the generated samples. Our main result provides a relationship between the pseudorandomness of the input and the statistical moments of the output. We propose a design based on the combination of pseudonoise sequences commonly used on wireless communications with known hardware implementation, which can generate sequences with guaranteed statistical distribution properties sufficient for many real life applications and simple machinery. Initial computer simulations on this construction show promising results in the quality of the output and the computational resources in terms of required memory and complexity.

Correlation, Linear Complexity, Maximum order Complexity on Families of binary Sequences

Correlation measure of order $k$ is an important measure of randomness in binary sequences. This measure tries to look for dependence between several shifted version of a sequence. We study the relation between the correlation measure of order $k$ and another two pseudorandom measures: the $N$th linear complexity and the $N$th maximum order complexity. We simplify and improve several state-of-the-art lower bounds for these two measures using the Hamming bound as well as weaker bounds derived from it.

Secure pseudorandom bit generators and point sets with low star-discrepancy

The star-discrepancy is a quantitative measure for the irregularity of distribution of a point set in the unit cube that is intimately linked to the integration error of quasi-Monte Carlo algorithms. These popular integration rules are nowadays also applied to very high-dimensional integration problems. Hence multi-dimensional point sets of reasonable size with low discrepancy are badly needed. A seminal result from Heinrich, Novak, Wasilkowski and Woźniakowski shows the existence of a positive number $C$ such that for every dimension $d$ there exists an $N$-element point set in $[0,1)^d$ with star-discrepancy of at most $C\sqrt{d/N}$. This is a pure existence result and explicit constructions of such point sets would be very desirable. The proofs are based on random samples of $N$-element point sets which are difficult to realize for practical applications. In this paper we propose to use secure pseudorandom bit generators for the generation of point sets with star-discrepancy of order $O(\sqrt{d/N})$. This proposal is supported theoretically and by means of numerical experiments.

Algebraic dependence in generating functions and expansion complexity

In 2012, Diem introduced a new figure of merit for cryptographic sequences called expansion complexity. Recently, a series of paper has been published for analysis of expansion complexity and for testing sequences in terms of this new measure of randomness. In this paper, we continue this analysis. First we study the expansion complexity in terms of the Gröbner basis of the underlying polynomial ideal. Next, we prove bounds on the expansion complexity for random sequences. Finally, we study the expansion complexity of sequences defined by differential equations, including the inversive generator.

On the linear complexity for multidimensional sequences

In this paper, we define the linear complexity for multidimensional sequences over finite fields, generalizing the one-dimensional case. We give some lower and upper bounds, valid with large probability, for the linear complexity and $k$-error linear complexity of multidimensional periodic sequences.

The Arithmetic of Consecutive Polynomial Sequences over Finite Fields

Motivated by a question of van der Poorten about the existence of infinite chain of prime numbers (with respect to some base), in this paper we advance the study of sequences of consecutive polynomials whose coefficients are chosen consecutively from a sequence in a finite field of odd prime characteristic. We study the arithmetic of such sequences, including bounds for the largest degree of irreducible factors, the number of irreducible factors, as well as for the number of such sequences of fixed length in which all the polynomials are irreducible.

Arithmetic Properties of Integers in Chains and Reflections of $g$-ary Expansions

Recently, there has been a sharp rise of interest in properties of digits primes. Here we study yet another question of this kind. Namely, we fix an integer base $g \ge 2$ and then for every infinite sequence $${\mathcal D} = \{d_i\}_{i=0}^\infty \in \{0, \ldots, g-1\}^\infty $$ of $g$-ary digits we consider the counting function $\varpi_{{\mathcal D},g}(N)$ of integers $n \le N$ for which $\sum_{i=0}^{n-1} d_i g^i$ is prime. We construct sequences ${\mathcal D}$ for which $\varpi_{{\mathcal D},g}(N)$ grows fast enough, and show that for some constant $\vartheta_g< g$ there are at most $O(\vartheta_g^N)$ initial elements $(d_0, \ldots, d_{N-1})$ of ${\mathcal D}$ for which $\varpi_{{\mathcal D},g}(N)=N+O(1)$. We also discuss joint arithmetic properties of integers and mirror reflections of their $g$-ary expansions.

Closed-set-based Discovery of Bases of Association Rules

The output of an association rule miner is often huge in practice. This is why several concise lossless representations have been proposed, such as the "essential" or "representative" rules. We revisit the algorithm given by Kryszkiewicz (Int. Symp. Intelligent Data Analysis 2001, Springer-Verlag LNCS 2189, 350-359) for mining representative rules. We show that its output is sometimes incomplete, due to an oversight in its mathematical validation. We propose alternative complete generators and we extend the approach to an existing closure-aware basis similar to, and often smaller than, the representative rules, namely the basis B*.
