A relativistic action-at-a-distance description of gravitational interactions?

It is shown that certain aspects of gravitation may be described using a relativistic action-at-a-distance formulation. The equations of motion of the model presented are invariant under Lorentz transformations and agree with the equations of Einstein's theory of General Relativity, at the first Post-Newtonian approximation, for any number of interacting point masses.

A derivation of the Breit equation from Barut's covariant formulation of electrodynamics in terms of direct interactions

We study Barut's covariant equations describing the electromagnetic interactions between N spin-1/2 particles. In the covariant formulation each particle is described by a Dirac spinor. It is assumed that the interactions between the particles are not mediated by a bosonic field (direct interactions). Within this formulation, using the Lagrangian formalism, we derive the approximate (semirelativistic) Breit equation for two interacting spin-1/2 particles.

Relativistic action at a distance and fields

After a brief review of the field formulations and the relativistic non-instantaneous action-at-a-distance formulations of some well known classical theories, we study Rivacoba's generalization of a theory with a linearly rising potential as a relativistic non-instantaneous action-at-a-distance theory. For this case we construct the corresponding field theory, which turns out to coincide with a model proposed by Kiskis to describe strong interactions. We construct the action functional for this field theory. Although this model belongs to the class of Lagrangian theories with higher derivatives, it is shown that its action-at-a-distance counterpart has a much simpler form. A proposal to construct an action-at-a-distance description of Yang-Mills interactions is also presented.

The Batalin-Vilkovisky Field-Antifield Action for Systems with First-Class Constraints

The Batalin-Vilkovisky field-antifield action for systems with first-class constraints is given explicitly in terms of the canonical hamiltonian, the hamiltonian constraints and the first-order hamiltonian gauge structure functions. It is shown that this action does not depend on the hamiltonian gauge structure functions of higher orders. A method for finding the lagrangian gauge structure tensors of all orders is presented. It is proven that the lagrangian gauge structure tensors do not depend on the hamiltonian gauge structure functions of second- or higher-orders.

Classical relativistic ideal gas in thermodynamic equilibrium in a uniformly accelerated reference frame

A classical (non-quantum-mechanical) relativistic ideal gas in thermodynamic equilibrium in a uniformly accelerated frame of reference is studied using Gibbs's microcanonical and grand canonical formulations of statistical mechanics. Using these methods explicit expressions for the particle, energy and entropy density distributions are obtained, which are found to be in agreement with the well known results of the relativistic formulation of Boltzmann's kinetic theory. Explicit expressions for the total entropy, total energy and rest mass of the gas are obtained. The position of the center of mass of the gas in equilibrium is found. The non-relativistic and ultrarelativistic approximations are also considered. The phase space volume of the system is calculated explicitly in the ultrarelativistic approximation.

Relativistic action-at-a-distance interactions: Lagrangian and Hamiltonian to terms of second order

Relativistic systems of particles interacting pairwise at a distance (interactions not mediated by fields) in flat spacetime are studied. It is assumed that the interactions propagate at the speed of light in vacuum and that all masses are scalars under Poincaré transformations. The action functional of the theory depends on multiple times (the proper times of the particles). In the static limit, the theory has three components: a linearly rising potential, a Coulomb-like interaction and a dynamical component to the Poincaré invariant mass. In this Letter we obtain explicitly, to terms of second order, the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian with all the dynamical variables depending on a single time. Approximate solutions of the relativistic two-body problem are presented.

Relativistic non-instantaneous action-at-a-distance interactions

Relativistic action-at-a-distance theories with interactions that propagate at the speed of light in vacuum are investigated. We consider the most general action depending on the velocities and relative positions of the particles. The Poincare invariant parameters that label successive events along the world lines can be identified with the proper times of the particles provided that certain conditions are impossed on the interaction terms in the action. Further conditions on the interaction terms arise from the requirement that mass be a scalar. A generic class of theories with interactions that satisfy these conditions is found. The relativistic equations of motion for these theories are presented. We obtain exact circular orbits solutions of the relativistic one-body problem. The exact relativistic one-body Hamiltonian is also derived. The theory has three components: a linearly rising potential, a Coulomb-like interaction and a dynamical component to the Poincaré invariant mass. At the quantum level we obtain the generalized Klein-Gordon-Fock equation and the Dirac equation.

Weyl-Wigner-Moyal formulation of a Dirac quantized constrained system

An extension of the Weyl-Wigner-Moyal formulation of quantum mechanics suitable for a Dirac quantized constrained system is proposed. In this formulation, quantum observables are described by equivalent classes of Weyl symbols. The Weyl product of these equivalent classes is defined. The new Moyal bracket is shown to be compatible with the Dirac bracket for constrained systems.
