Predictions of inflation: the slow roll approximation vs. exact results

Inflation predicts the generation of cosmological perturbations. Usually, the power spectra for the scalar and tensor modes are calculated with help of the slow roll approximation. In the case of power law inflation an exact result is available. We compare the predictions for the cosmic microwave background anisotropies from the slow roll approximation with the exact results from power law inflation. We find that the so-called consistency check from the slow roll approximation, $C_2^T/C_2^S \approx -6.93 n_T$, may differ considerably from the exact result.

Amplitude of superhorizon cosmological perturbations

We study the influence of reheating on super-horizon density perturbations and gravitational waves. We correct wrong claims [L. P. Grishchuk Phys. Rev. D 50, 7154 (1994) and gr-qc/9801011] about the joining of perturbations at cosmological transitions and about the quantization of cosmological perturbations.

The influence of cosmological transitions on the evolution of density perturbations

We study the influence of the reheating and equality transitions on superhorizon density perturbations and gravitational waves. Recent criticisms of the `standard result' for large-scale perturbations in inflationary cosmology are rectified. The claim that the `conservation law' for the amplitude of superhorizon modes was empty is shown to be wrong. For sharp transitions, i.e. the pressure jumps, we rederive the Deruelle-Mukhanov junction conditions. For a smooth transition we correct a result obtained by Grishchuk recently. We show that the junction conditions are not crucial, because the pressure is continuous during the reheating transition. The problem occurred, because the perturbed metric was not evolved correctly through the smooth reheating transition. Finally, we derive the `standard result' within Grishchuks's smooth (reheating) transition.

Distortions of the Harrison-Zel'dovich spectrum from the QCD transition

We investigate the effect of the cosmological QCD transition on the evolution of primordial density perturbations. If the phase transition is first order, the sound speed vanishes during the transition and density perturbations fall freely. The Harrison-Zel'dovich spectrum of density fluctuations develops large peaks on scales below the Hubble radius at the transition. These peaks above the primordial spectrum grow with wavenumber and produce cold dark matter clumps of masses less than $10^{-10} M_\odot$. At the horizon scale the amplification of overdensities is of order unity, and thus no $1 M_\odot$ black hole production is possible for a COBE normalized scale-invariant spectrum.

Peaks above the Harrison-Zel'dovich spectrum due to the Quark-Gluon to Hadron Transition

The quark-gluon to hadron transition affects the evolution of cosmological perturbations. If the phase transition is first order, the sound speed vanishes during the transition, and density perturbations fall freely. This distorts the primordial Harrison-Zel'dovich spectrum of density fluctuations below the Hubble scale at the transition. Peaks are produced, which grow at most linearly in wavenumber, both for the hadron-photon-lepton fluid and for cold dark matter. For cold dark matter which is kinetically decoupled well before the QCD transition clumps of masses below $10^{-10} M_\odot$ are produced.

Deviations from the Harrison-Zel'dovich spectrum due to the Quark-Gluon to Hadron Transition

We investigate the effect of the quark-gluon to hadron transition on the evolution of cosmological perturbations. If the phase transition is first order, the sound speed vanishes during the transition, and density perturbations fall freely. The primordial Harrison-Zel'dovich density fluctuations for scales below the Hubble radius at the transition develop peaks, which grow linearly with the wavenumber, both for the hadron-photon-lepton fluid and for cold dark matter. The large peaks in the spectrum produce cold dark matter clumps of $10^{-8}$ to $10^{-11} M_\odot$.

Cosmological Perturbations of Ultrarelativistic Plasmas

Scalar cosmological perturbations of a weakly self-interacting plasma mixed with a perfect radiation fluid are investigated. Effects of this plasma are considered through order $λ^{3/2}$ of perturbative thermal-field-theory in the radiation dominated universe. The breakdown of thermal perturbation theory at vastly subhorizon scales is circumvented by a Padé approximant solution. Compared to collisionless plasmas the phase speed and subhorizon damping of the plasma density perturbations are changed. An example for a self-interacting thermal field is provided by the neutrinos with effective 4-fermion interactions.

The dynamics of cosmological perturbations in thermal $λϕ^4$ theory

Using a recent thermal-field-theory approach to cosmological perturbations, the exact solutions that were found for collisionless ultrarelativistic matter are generalized to include the effects from weak self-interactions in a $λϕ^4$ model through order $λ^{3/2}$. This includes the effects of a resummation of thermal masses and associated nonlocal gravitational vertices, thus going far beyond classical kinetic theory. Explicit solutions for all the scalar, vector, and tensor modes are obtained for a radiation-dominated Einstein-de Sitter model containing a weakly interacting scalar plasma with or without the admixture of an independent component of perfect radiation fluid.

Kinetic vs. Thermal-Field-Theory Approach to Cosmological Perturbations

A closed set of equations for the evolution of linear perturbations of homogeneous, isotropic cosmological models can be obtained in various ways. The simplest approach is to assume a macroscopic equation of state, e.g.\ that of a perfect fluid. For a more refined description of the early universe, a microscopic treatment is required. The purpose of this paper is to compare the approach based on classical kinetic theory to the more recent thermal-field-theory approach. It is shown that in the high-temperature limit the latter describes cosmological perturbations supported by collisionless, massless matter, wherein it is equivalent to the kinetic theory approach. The dependence of the perturbations in a system of a collisionless gas and a perfect fluid on the initial data is discussed in some detail. All singular and regular solutions are found analytically.

Analytic Solutions for Cosmological Perturbations in Multi-Dimensional Space-Time

We obtain analytic solutions for the density contrast and the anisotropic pressure in a multi-dimensional FRW cosmology with collisionless, massless matter. These are compared with perturbations of a perfect fluid universe. To describe the metric perturbations we use manifest gauge invariant metric potentials. The matter perturbations are calculated by means of (automatically gauge invariant) finite temperature field theory, instead of kinetic theory.
