Versatile transporter apparatus for experiments with optically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

We describe a versatile and simple scheme for producing magnetically and optically-trapped Rb-87 Bose-Einstein condensates, based on a moving-coil transporter apparatus. The apparatus features a TOP trap that incorporates the movable quadrupole coils used for magneto-optical trapping and long-distance magnetic transport of atomic clouds. As a stand-alone device, this trap allows for the stable production of condensates containing up to one million atoms. In combination with an optical dipole trap, the TOP trap acts as a funnel for efficient loading, after which the quadrupole coils can be retracted, thereby maximizing optical access. The robustness of this scheme is illustrated by realizing the superfluid-to-Mott insulator transition in a three-dimensional optical lattice.

Analysis of Kapitza-Dirac diffraction patterns beyond the Raman-Nath regime

We study Kapitza-Dirac diffraction of a Bose-Einstein condensate from a standing light wave for a square pulse with variable pulse length but constant pulse area. We find that for sufficiently weak pulses, the usual analytical short-pulse prediction for the Raman-Nath regime continues to hold for longer times, albeit with a reduction of the apparent modulation depth of the standing wave. We quantitatively relate this effect to the Fourier width of the pulse, and draw analogies to the Rabi dynamics of a coupled two-state system. Our findings, combined with numerical modeling for stronger pulses, are of practical interest for the calibration of optical lattices in ultracold atomic systems.

Large atom number Bose-Einstein Condensate machines

We describe experimental setups for producing large Bose-Einstein condensates of 23Na and 87Rb. In both, a high flux thermal atomic beam is decelerated by a Zeeman slower and is captured and cooled in a magneto-optical trap. The atoms are then transfered into a cloverleaf style Ioffe-Pritchard magnetic trap and cooled to quantum degeneracy with radio frequency induced forced evaporation. Typical condensates contain 20 million atoms. The design includes a second vacuum chamber into which ultracold atoms can be transported with an optical tweezers. This allows the flexibility to rapidly prepare and perform a wide variety of experiments.

Raman Amplification of Matter Waves

We demonstrate a Raman amplifier for matter-waves, where the amplified atoms and the gain medium are in two different hyperfine states. This amplifier is based on a novel form of superradiance that arises from self-stimulated Raman scattering in a Bose-Einstein condensate.
