Groups with infinitely many ends acting analytically on the circle

This article takes the inspiration from two milestones in the study of non minimal actions of groups on the circle: Duminy's theorem about the number of ends of semi-exceptional leaves and Ghys' freeness result in analytic regularity. Our first result concerns groups of analytic diffeomorphisms with infinitely many ends: if the action is non expanding, then the group is virtually free. The second result is a Duminy's theorem for minimal codimension one foliations: either non expandable leaves have infinitely many ends, or the holonomy pseudogroup preserves a projective structure.

Expanding actions: minimality and ergodicity

We prove that every expanding minimal semigroup action of $C^1$ diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold (resp. $C^{1+α}$ conformal) is robustly minimal (resp. ergodic with respect to Lebesgue measure). We also show how, locally, a blending region yields the robustness of the minimality and implies ergodicity.

On the chaos game of Iterated Function Systems

Every quasi-attractor of an iterated function system (IFS) of continuous functions on a first-countable Hausdorff topological space is renderable by the probabilistic chaos game. By contrast, we prove that the backward minimality is a necessary condition to get the deterministic chaos game. As a consequence, we obtain that an IFS of homeomorphisms of the circle is renderable by the deterministic chaos game if and only if it is forward and backward minimal. This result provides examples of attractors (a forward but no backward minimal IFS on the circle) that are not renderable by the deterministic chaos game. We also prove that every well-fibred quasi-attractor is renderable by the deterministic chaos game as well as quasi-attractors of both, symmetric and non-expansive IFSs.

Ping-pong configurations and circular orders on free groups

We discuss actions of free groups on the circle with "ping-pong" dynamics; these are dynamics determined by a finite amount of combinatorial data, analogous to Schottky domains or Markov partitions. Using this, we show that the free group $F_n$ admits an isolated circular order if and only if n is even, in stark contrast with the case for linear orders. This answers a question from (Mann, Rivas, 2016). Inspired by work of Alvarez, Barrientos, Filimonov, Kleptsyn, Malicet, Menino and Triestino, we also exhibit examples of "exotic" isolated points in the space of all circular orders on $F_2$. Analogous results are obtained for linear orders on the groups $F_n \times \mathbb{Z}$.

Random walks on $\mathrm{Homeo}(S^1)$

In this paper, we study random walks $g_n=f_{n-1}\cdots f_0$ on the group $\mathrm{Homeo}(S^1)$ of the homeomorphisms of the circle, where the homeomorphisms $f_k$ are chosen randomly, independently, with respect to a same probability measure $ν$. We prove that under the only condition that there is no probability measure invariant by $ν$-almost every homeomorphism, the random walk almost surely contracts small intervals. It generalizes what has been known on this subject until now, since various conditions on $ν$ were imposed in order to get the phenomenon of contractions. Moreover, we obtain the surprising fact that the rate of contraction is exponential, even in the lack of assumptions of smoothness on the $f_k$'s. We deduce next various dynamical consequences on the random walk $(g_n)$: finiteness of ergodic stationary measures, distribution of the trajectories, asymptotic law of the evaluations, etc. The proof of the main result is based on a modification of the Ávila-Viana's invariance principle, working for continuous cocycles on a space fibred in circles.

Generalization of the Nualart-Peccati criterion

The celebrated Nualart-Peccati criterion [Ann. Probab. 33 (2005) 177-193] ensures the convergence in distribution toward a standard Gaussian random variable $N$ of a given sequence $\{X_n\}_{n\ge1}$ of multiple Wiener-Itô integrals of fixed order, if $\mathbb {E}[X_n^2]\to1$ and $\mathbb {E}[X_n^4]\to \mathbb {E}[N^4]=3$. Since its appearance in 2005, the natural question of ascertaining which other moments can replace the fourth moment in the above criterion has remained entirely open. Based on the technique recently introduced in [J. Funct. Anal. 266 (2014) 2341-2359], we settle this problem and establish that the convergence of any even moment, greater than four, to the corresponding moment of the standard Gaussian distribution, guarantees the central convergence. As a by-product, we provide many new moment inequalities for multiple Wiener-Itô integrals. For instance, if $X$ is a normalized multiple Wiener-Itô integral of order greater than one, \[\forall k\ge2,\qquad \mathbb {E}\bigl[X^{2k}\bigr]>\mathbb {E} \bigl[N^{2k}\bigr]=(2k-1)!!.\]

Squared chaotic random variables: new moment inequalities with applications

We prove a new family of inequalities involving squares of random variables belonging to the Wiener chaos associated with a given Gaussian field. Our result provides a substantial generalisation, as well as a new analytical proof, of an estimate by Frenkel (2007), and also constitute a natural real counterpart to an inequality established by Arias-de-Reyna (1998) in the framework of complex Gaussian vectors. We further show that our estimates can be used to deduce new lower bounds on homogeneous polynomials, thus partially improving results by Pinasco (2012), as well as to obtain a novel probabilistic representation of the remainder in Hadamard inequality of matrix analysis.
