Basic mechanisms in the laser control of non-Markovian dynamics

Referring to a Fano-type model qualitative analogy we develop a comprehensive basic mechanism for the laser control of the non-Markovian bath response in strongly coupled Open Quantum Systems (OQS). A converged Hierarchy Equations Of Motion (HEOM) is worked out to numerically solve the master equation of a spin-boson Hamiltonian to reach the reduced electronic density matrix of a heterojunction in the presence of strong THz laser pulses. Robust and efficient control is achieved increasing by a factor ?2 non-Markovianity measured by the time evolution of the volume of accessible states. The consequences of such fields on the central system populations and coherence are examined, putting the emphasis on the relation between the increase of non- Markovianity and the slowing down of decoherence processes.

On the control by electromagnetic fields of quantum systems with infinite dimensional Hilbert space

We analyze the control by electromagnetic fields of quantum systems with infinite dimensional Hilbert space and a discrete spectrum. Based on recent mathematical results, we rigorously show under which conditions such a system can be approximated in a finite dimensional Hilbert space. For a given threshold error, we estimate this finite dimension in terms of the used control field. As illustrative examples, we consider the cases of a rigid rotor and of a harmonic oscillator.

Optimal control of quantum superpositions in a bosonic Josephson junction

We show how to optimally control the creation of quantum superpositions in a bosonic Josephson junction within the two-site Bose-Hubbard model framework. Both geometric and purely numerical optimal control approaches are used, the former providing a generalization of the proposal of Micheli et al [Phys. Rev. A 67, 013607 (2003)]. While this method is shown not to lead to significant improvements in terms of time of formation and fidelity of the superposition, a numerical optimal control approach appears more promising, as it allows to create an almost perfect superposition, within a time short compared to other existing protocols. We analyze the robustness of the optimal solution against atom number variations. Finally, we discuss to which extent these optimal solutions could be implemented with the state of art technology.
