Community Engagement Frontier

This is the summary report of the Community Engagement Frontier for the Snowmass 2021 study of the future of particle physics. The report discusses a number of general issues of importance to the particle physics community, including (1) the relation of universities, national laboratories, and industry, (2) career paths for scientists engaged in particle physics, (3) diversity, equity, and inclusion, (4) physics education, (5) public education and outreach, (6) engagement with the government and public policy, and (7) the environmental and social impacts of particle physics.

Public Education and Outreach

This article summarizes recommendations made by the Community Engagement Frontier conveners as part of the 2022 Snowmass process. It suggests that institutions involved in high energy physics (e.g., universities, national laboratories, funding agencies, etc.) add education and outreach as a valuable effort and one that should be considered in hiring and promotion decisions.

The need for structural changes to create impactful public engagement in US particle physics

This Snowmass21 Contributed Paper addresses the structural changes that need to occur in the many groups and organizations that intersect with the US particle physics community to enable impactful public engagement to flourish. The impetus for these changes should come from the particle physics community, which should acknowledge the importance of public engagement and act on the recommendations in this Snowmass contributed paper. Scientists have expressed frustration at the barriers, penalties and lack of support that discourage them from participating in public engagement. In this paper, we provide many ways to create a supportive, enabling atmosphere for public engagement among physicists.

Informal Science Education and Career Advancement

This document supports a proposed APS statement that encourages academic, research, and other institutions to add the participation in informal science education activities to the criteria they use for hiring and career advancement decisions. There is a prevalent attitude that the time spent by a researcher on these activities takes time away from research efforts that are more valued by their peers and their institution. To change this mindset, we enumerate the many benefits of informal science education activities to the public, to researchers, to their institutions, and to the field of physics. We also suggest aspects of these activities that may be considered by institutions in evaluating informal educational efforts for recruitment and career advancement decisions.

Jet Physics at the Tevatron

Jets have been used to verify the theory of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), measure the structure of the proton and to search for the physics beyond the Standard Model. In this article, we review the current status of jet physics at the Tevatron, a sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV p-pbar collider at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. We report on recent measurements of the inclusive jet production cross section and the results of searches for physics beyond the Standard Model using jets. Dijet production measurements are also reported.

Recent QCD Results

The study of the inelastic scattering of hadrons has progressed in the last decade. With the availability of high-statistics data sets from HERA and the Tevatron, our understanding of high energy and high jet multiplicity events has become rather precise. In this Proceedings, I present an overview of recent jet-only results, as well as measurements of events which combine both jets and a W or Z boson.
