On enumeration of $b$-angulations of surfaces from an integrability perspective

In this paper, we study generating series enumerating polygonal angulations of closed oriented surfaces of fixed genus, focusing on $b$-angulations with $b = 3$ or $b = 2\nu$, $\nu \geq 2$. Based on Toda integrability, we establish new structural results in the cases $b = 3$ and $b = 4$. Furthermore, via the Hodge--GUE correspondence, we derive a fine structure in the $b = 2\nu$ case, which implies a conjectural statement of Gharakhloo--Latimer.

On uniform large genus asymptotics of Witten's intersection numbers

Following ideas from [14], we give a uniform large genus asymptotics for primitive psi-class intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable algebraic curves, and extend this result including insertions of zeros in a certain uniform way. Application to a particular formal solution of the Painlev\'e I equation is given. We also use a method from [14] to give a new proof of the polynomiality conjecture on large genus asymptotic expansions of psi-class intersection numbers.

Combinatorics and large genus asymptotics of the Br\'ezin--Gross--Witten numbers

In this paper, we study combinatorial and asymptotic properties of some interesting rational numbers called the Br\'ezin--Gross--Witten (BGW) numbers, which can be represented as the intersection numbers of psi and Theta classes on the moduli space of stable algebraic curves. In particular, we discover and prove the uniform large genus leading asymptotics of certain normalized BGW numbers, and give a new proof of the polynomiality phenomenon for the large genus asymptotics. We also propose, with extensive numerical data, several new conjectures including monotonicity and integrality on the BGW numbers. Applications to the Painlev\'e II hierarchy and to the BGW-kappa numbers are given.

The Habiro ring of a number field

We introduce the Habiro ring of a number field $\mathbb{K}$ and modules over it graded by $K_3(\mathbb{K})$. Elements of these modules are collections of power series at each complex root of unity that arithmetically glue with each other after applying a Frobenius endomorphism, and after dividing at each prime by a collection of series that depends solely on an element of the Bloch group. The main theorems of this paper concern number fields, their algebraic $K$-theory and its regulator maps (Borel, $p$-adic and \'etale), whereas the explicit collections of series are defined by a careful algebraic analysis of the infinite Pochhammer symbol at roots of unity. The origin of the above mentioned power series comes from perturbative Chern--Simons theory and by expansions of the admissible series of Kontsevich--Soibelman, both ultimately related to the infinite Pochhammer symbol. This link suggests that some Donaldson-Thomas invariants have arithmetic meaning and that some elements of the Habiro ring of a number field have enumerative meaning. Added subsection 1.1 explaining what the paper is about and subsection 1.8 explaining the relation to perturbative complex Chern-Simons theory.

On the Euler characteristic of the commutative graph complex and the top weight cohomology of $\mathcal M_g$

We prove an asymptotic formula for the Euler characteristic of Kontsevich's commutative graph complex. This formula implies that the total amount of commutative graph homology grows super-exponentially with the rank and, via a theorem of Chan, Galatius, and Payne, that the dimension of the top weight cohomology of the moduli space of curves, $\mathcal M_g$, grows super-exponentially with the genus $g$.

Knots, Perturbative Series and Quantum Modularity

We introduce an invariant of a hyperbolic knot which is a map $α\mapsto \boldsymbolΦ_α(h)$ from $\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$ to matrices with entries in $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}[[h]]$ and with rows and columns indexed by the boundary parabolic ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ representations of the fundamental group of the knot. These matrix invariants have a rich structure: (a) their $(σ_0,σ_1)$ entry, where $σ_0$ is the trivial and $σ_1$ the geometric representation, is the power series expansion of the Kashaev invariant of the knot around the root of unity ${\rm e}^{2π{\rm i} α}$ as an element of the Habiro ring, and the remaining entries belong to generalized Habiro rings of number fields; (b) the first column is given by the perturbative power series of Dimofte-Garoufalidis; (c) the columns of $\boldsymbolΦ$ are fundamental solutions of a linear $q$-difference equation; (d) the matrix defines an ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-cocycle $W_γ$ in matrix-valued functions on $\mathbb{Q}$ that conjecturally extends to a smooth function on $\mathbb{R}$ and even to holomorphic functions on suitable complex cut planes, lifting the factorially divergent series $\boldsymbolΦ(h)$ to actual functions. The two invariants $\boldsymbolΦ$ and $W_γ$ are related by a refined quantum modularity conjecture which we illustrate in detail for the three simplest hyperbolic knots, the $4_1$, $5_2$ and $(-2,3,7)$ pretzel knots. This paper has two sequels, one giving a different realization of our invariant as a matrix of convergent $q$-series with integer coefficients and the other studying its Habiro-like arithmetic properties in more depth.

A hyperbolic Kac-Moody Calogero model

A new kind of quantum Calogero model is proposed, based on a hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebra. We formulate nonrelativistic quantum mechanics on the Minkowskian root space of the simplest rank-3 hyperbolic Lie algebra $AE_3$ with an inverse-square potential given by its real roots and reduce it to the unit future hyperboloid. By stereographic projection this defines a quantum mechanics on the Poincaré disk with a unique potential. Since the Weyl group of $AE_3$ is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ extension of the modular group PSL(2,$\mathbb{Z}_2$), the model is naturally formulated on the complex upper half plane, and its potential is a real modular function. We present and illustrate the relevant features of $AE_3$, give some approximations to the potential and rewrite it as an (almost everywhere convergent) Poincaré series. The standard Dunkl operators are constructed and investigated on Minkowski space and on the hyperboloid. In the former case find that their commutativity is obstructed by rank-2 subgroups of hyperbolic type (the simplest one given by the Fibonacci sequence), casting doubt on the integrability of the model. An appendix with Don Zagier investigates the computability of the potential. We foresee applications to cosmological billards and to quantum chaos.

Knots and Their Related $q$-Series

We discuss a matrix of periodic holomorphic functions in the upper and lower half-plane which can be obtained from a factorization of an Andersen-Kashaev state integral of a knot complement with remarkable analytic and asymptotic properties that defines a ${\rm PSL}_2({\mathbb Z})$-cocycle on the space of matrix-valued piecewise analytic functions on the real numbers. We identify the corresponding cocycle with the one coming from the Kashaev invariant of a knot (and its matrix-valued extension) via the refined quantum modularity conjecture of [arXiv:2111.06645] and also relate the matrix-valued invariant with the 3D-index of Dimofte-Gaiotto-Gukov. The cocycle also has an analytic extendability property that leads to the notion of a matrix-valued holomorphic quantum modular form. This is a tale of several independent discoveries, both empirical and theoretical, all illustrated by the three simplest hyperbolic knots.

Mapping partition functions

We introduce an infinite group action on partition functions of WK type, meaning of the type of the partition function $Z^{\rm WK}$ in the famous result of Witten and Kontsevich expressing the partition function of $\psi$-class integrals on the compactified moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ as a $\tau$-function for the Korteweg--de Vries hierarchy. Specifically, the group which acts is the group $\mathcal{G}$ of formal power series of one variable $\varphi(V)=V+O(V^2)$, with group law given by composition, acting in a suitable way on the infinite tuple of variables of the partition functions. In particular, any $\varphi \in \mathcal{G}$ sends the Witten--Kontsevich (WK) partition function $Z^{\rm WK}$ to a new partition function $Z^\varphi$, which we call the WK mapping partition function associated to $\varphi$. We show that the genus zero part of $\log Z^\varphi$ is independent of $\varphi$ and give an explicit recursive description for its higher genus parts (loop equation), and as applications of this obtain relationships of the $\psi$-class integrals to Gaussian Unitary Ensemble and generalized Br\'ezin--Gross--Witten correlators. In a different direction, we use $Z^\varphi$ to construct a new integrable hierarchy, which we call the WK mapping hierarchy associated to $\varphi$. We show that this hierarchy is a bihamiltonian perturbation of the Riemann--Hopf hierarchy possessing a $\tau$-structure, and prove that it is a universal object for all such perturbations. Similarly, for any $\varphi\in\mathcal{G}$, we define the Hodge mapping partition function associated to $\varphi$, prove that it is integrable, and study its role in hamiltonian perturbations of the Riemann--Hopf hierarchy possessing a $\tau$-structure. Finally, we establish a generalized Hodge--WK correspondence relating different Hodge mapping partition functions.

Hyperbolic 3-manifolds, the Bloch group, and the work of Walter Neumann

This is an article about the work of Walter Neumann on hyperbolic geometry, ideal triangulations of 3-manifolds, the volume and Chern-Simons invariants of 3-manifolds and their elements of the the Bloch group. The article focuses on the relations of these classical invariants and the impact of Neumann's work to quantum topology and to mathematical physics.

Modular Linear Differential Operators and Generalized Rankin-Cohen Brackets

The aim in this paper is to give expressions for modular linear differential operators of any order. In particular, we show that they can all be described in terms of Rankin-Cohen brackets and a modified Rankin-Cohen bracket found by Kaneko and Koike. We also give more uniform descriptions of MLDOs in terms of canonically defined higher Serre derivatives and an extension of Rankin-Cohen brackets, as well as in terms of quasimodular forms and almost holomorphic modular forms. The last of these descriptions involves the holomorphic projection map. The paper also includes some general results on the theory of quasimodular forms on both cocompact and non-cocompact subgroups of $SL_2(\mathbb{R})$, as well as a slight sharpening of a theorem of Martin and Royer on Rankin-Cohen brackets of quasimodular forms

Geometry and arithmetic of integrable hierarchies of KdV type. I. Integrality

For each of the simple Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}=A_l$, $D_l$ or $E_6$, we show that the all-genera one-point FJRW invariants of $\mathfrak{g}$-type, after multiplication by suitable products of Pochhammer symbols, are the coefficients of an algebraic generating function and hence are integral. Moreover, we find that the all-genera invariants themselves coincide with the coefficients of the unique calibration of the Frobenius manifold of $\mathfrak{g}$-type evaluated at a special point. For the $A_4$ (5-spin) case we also find two other normalizations of the sequence that are again integral and of at most exponential growth, and hence conjecturally are the Taylor coefficients of some period functions.

D-brane masses at special fibres of hypergeometric families of Calabi-Yau threefolds, modular forms, and periods

We consider the fourteen families $W$ of Calabi-Yau threefolds with one complex structure parameter and Picard-Fuchs equation of hypergeometric type, like the mirror of the quintic in $\mathbb{P}^4$. Mirror symmetry identifies the masses of even--dimensional D--branes of the mirror Calabi-Yau $M$ with four periods of the holomorphic $(3,0)$-form over a symplectic basis of $H_3(W,\mathbb{Z})$. It was discovered by Chad Schoen that the singular fiber at the conifold of the quintic gives rise to a Hecke eigenform of weight four under $Γ_0(25)$, whose Hecke eigenvalues are determined by the Hasse-Weil zeta function which can be obtained by counting points of that fiber over finite fields. Similar features are known for the thirteen other cases. In two cases we further find special regular points, so called rank two attractor points, where the Hasse-Weil zeta function gives rise to modular forms of weight four and two. We numerically identify entries of the period matrix at these special fibers as periods and quasiperiods of the associated modular forms. In one case we prove this by constructing a correspondence between the conifold fiber and a Kuga-Sato variety. We also comment on simpler applications to local Calabi-Yau threefolds.

Strichartz Estimates with Broken Symmetries

In this note we study the eigenvalue problem for a quadratic form associated with Strichartz estimates for the Schrödinger equation, proving in particular a sharp Strichartz inequality for the case of odd initial data. We also describe an alternative method that is applicable to a wider class of matrix problems.

A curious identity that implies Faber's conjecture

We prove that a curious generating series identity implies Faber's intersection number conjecture (by showing that it implies a combinatorial identity already given in arXiv:1902.02742) and give a new proof of Faber's conjecture by directly proving this identity.

Bloch groups, algebraic K-theory, units, and Nahm's Conjecture

Given an element of the Bloch group of a number field~$F$ and a natural number~$n$, we construct an explicit unit in the field $F_n=F(e^{2 πi/n})$, well-defined up to $\nn$-th powers of nonzero elements of~$F_n$. The construction uses the cyclic quantum dilogarithm, and under the identification of the Bloch group of~$F$ with the $K$-group $K_3(F)$ gives \changed{(up to an unidentified invertible scalar)} a \changed{formula} for a certain abstract Chern class from~$K_3(F)$. The units we define are conjectured to coincide with numbers appearing in the quantum modularity conjecture for the Kashaev invariant of knots (which was the original motivation for our investigation), and also appear in the radial asymptotics of Nahm sums near roots of unity. This latter connection is used to prove Nahm's conjecture relating the modularity of certain $q$-hypergeometric series to the vanishing of the associated elements in the Bloch group of~$\overline{\mathbb Q}$.

On tau-functions for the KdV hierarchy

For an arbitrary solution to the KdV hierarchy, the generating series of logarithmic derivatives of the tau-function of the solution can be expressed by the basic matrix resolvent via algebraic manipulations. Based on this we develop in this paper two new formulae for the generating series by introducing a pair of wave functions of the solution. Applications to the Witten--Kontsevich tau-function, to the generalized Brézin--Gross--Witten (BGW) tau-function, as well as to a modular deformation of the generalized BGW tau-function which we call the Lamé tau-function are also given.

Information thermodynamics of financial markets: the Glosten-Milgrom model

The Glosten-Milgrom model describes a single asset market, where informed traders interact with a market maker, in the presence of noise traders. We derive an analogy between this financial model and a Szilárd information engine by {\em i)} showing that the optimal work extraction protocol in the latter coincides with the pricing strategy of the market maker in the former and {\em ii)} defining a market analogue of the physical temperature from the analysis of the distribution of market orders. Then we show that the expected gain of informed traders is bounded above by the product of this market temperature with the amount of information that informed traders have, in exact analogy with the corresponding formula for the maximal expected amount of work that can be extracted from a cycle of the information engine. This suggests that recent ideas from information thermodynamics may shed light on financial markets, and lead to generalised inequalities, in the spirit of the extended second law of thermodynamics.
