The double cone geometry is stable to brane nucleation

In gauge/gravity duality, the bulk double cone geometry has been argued to account for a key feature of the spectral form factor known as the ramp. This feature is deeply associated with quantum chaos in the dual field theory. The connection with the ramp has been demonstrated in detail for two-dimensional theories of bulk gravity, but it appears natural in higher dimensions as well. In a general bulk theory the double cone might thus be expected to dominate the semiclassical bulk path integral for the boundary spectral form factor in the ramp regime. While other known spacetime wormholes have been shown to be unstable to brane nucleation when they dominate over known disconnected (factorizing) solutions, we argue that the double cone is stable to semiclassical brane nucleation at the probe-brane level in a variety of string- and M-theory settings. Possible implications for the AdS/CFT factorization problem are briefly discussed.

AdS Euclidean wormholes

We explore the construction and stability of asymptotically anti-de Sitter Euclidean wormholes in a variety of models. In simple ad hoc low-energy models, it is not hard to construct two-boundary Euclidean wormholes that dominate over disconnected solutions and which are stable (lacking negative modes) in the usual sense of Euclidean quantum gravity. Indeed, the structure of such solutions turns out to strongly resemble that of the Hawking-Page phase transition for AdS-Schwarzschild black holes, in that for boundary sources above some threshold we find both a `large' and a `small' branch of wormhole solutions with the latter being stable and dominating over the disconnected solution for large enough sources. We are also able to construct two-boundary Euclidean wormholes in a variety of string compactifications that dominate over the disconnected solutions we find and that are stable with respect to field-theoretic perturbations. However, as in classic examples investigated by Maldacena and Maoz, the wormholes in these UV-complete settings always suffer from brane-nucleation instabilities (even when sources that one might hope would stabilize such instabilities are tuned to large values). This indicates the existence of additional disconnected solutions with lower action. We discuss the significance of such results for the factorization problem of AdS/CFT.

Observations of Hawking radiation: the Page curve and baby universes

We reformulate recent insights into black hole information in a manner emphasizing operationally-defined notions of entropy, Lorentz-signature descriptions, and asymptotically flat spacetimes. With the help of replica wormholes, we find that experiments of asymptotic observers are consistent with black holes as unitary quantum systems, with density of states given by the Bekenstein-Hawking formula. However, this comes at the cost of superselection sectors associated with the state of baby universes. Spacetimes studied by Polchinski and Strominger in 1994 provide a simple illustration of the associated concepts and techniques, and we argue them to be a natural late-time extrapolation of replica wormholes. The work aims to be self-contained and, in particular, to be accessible to readers who have not yet mastered earlier formulations of the ideas above.

Hawking radiation from AdS black holes

We study Hartle-Hawking-like states of quantum field theories on asymptotically AdS black hole backgrounds, with particular regard to the phase structure of interacting theories. By a suitable analytic continuation we show that the equilibrium dynamics of field theories on large asymptotically AdS black holes can be related to the low temperature states of the same field theory on the AdS soliton (or pure AdS) background. This allows us to gain insight into Hartle-Hawking-like states on large-radius Schwarzschild- or rotating-AdS black holes. Furthermore, we exploit the AdS/CFT correspondence to explore the physics of strongly coupled large N theories on asymptotically AdS black holes. In particular, we exhibit a plausibly complete set of phases for the M2-brane world-volume superconformal field theory on a BTZ black hole background. Our analysis partially resolves puzzles previously raised in connection with Hawking radiation on large AdS black holes.

Radial Cutoffs and Holographic Entanglement

Tensor networks, $T\bar{T}$, and broader notions of a holographic principle all motivate the idea that some notion of gravitational holography should persist in the presence of a radial cutoff. But in the absence of time-reflection symmetry, the areas of Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi surfaces anchored to the radial cutoff generally violate strong subadditivity, even when the associated boundary regions are spacelike separated as defined by both bulk and boundary notions of causality. We thus propose an alternate definition of cutoff-holographic entropy using a restricted maximin prescription anchored to a codimension 2 cutoff surface. For bulk solutions that respect the null energy condition, we show that the resulting areas satisfy SSA, entanglement wedge nesting, and monogamy of mutual information in parallel with cutoff free results in AdS. These results hold even when the cutoff surface fails to be convex.

Probing phase transitions of holographic entanglement entropy with fixed area states

Recent results suggest that new corrections to holographic entanglement entropy should arise near phase transitions of the associated Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) surface. We study such corrections by decomposing the bulk state into fixed-area states and conjecturing that a certain `diagonal approximation' will hold. In terms of the bulk Newton constant $G$, this yields a correction of order $O(G^{-1/2})$ near such transitions, which is in particular larger than generic corrections from the entanglement of bulk quantum fields. However, the correction becomes exponentially suppressed away from the transition. The net effect is to make the entanglement a smooth function of all parameters, turning the RT `phase transition' into a crossover already at this level of analysis. We illustrate this effect with explicit calculations (again assuming our diagonal approximation) for boundary regions given by a pair of disconnected intervals on the boundary of the AdS$_3$ vacuum and for a single interval on the boundary of the BTZ black hole. In a natural large-volume limit where our diagonal approximation clearly holds, this second example verifies that our results agree with general predictions made by Murthy and Srednicki in the context of chaotic many-body systems. As a further check on our conjectured diagonal approximation, we show that it also reproduces the $O(G^{-1/2})$ correction found Penington et al for an analogous quantum RT transition. Our explicit computations also illustrate the cutoff-dependence of fluctuations in RT-areas.

Transcending the ensemble: baby universes, spacetime wormholes, and the order and disorder of black hole information

In the 1980's, work by Coleman and by Giddings and Strominger linked the physics of spacetime wormholes to `baby universes' and an ensemble of theories. We revisit such ideas, using features associated with a negative cosmological constant and asymptotically AdS boundaries to strengthen the results, introduce a change in perspective, and connect with recent replica wormhole discussions of the Page curve. A key new feature is an emphasis on the role of null states. We explore this structure in detail in simple topological models of the bulk that allow us to compute the full spectrum of associated boundary theories. The dimension of the asymptotically AdS Hilbert space turns out to become a random variable $Z$, whose value can be less than the naive number $k$ of independent states in the theory. For $k>Z$, consistency arises from an exact degeneracy in the inner product defined by the gravitational path integral, so that many a priori independent states differ only by a null state. We argue that a similar property must hold in any consistent gravitational path integral. We also comment on other aspects of extrapolations to more complicated models, and on possible implications for the black hole information problem in the individual members of the above ensemble.

Bag-of-gold spacetimes, Euclidean wormholes, and inflation from domain walls in AdS/CFT

We use Euclidean path integrals to explore the set of bulk asymptotically AdS spacetimes with good CFT duals. We consider simple bottom-up models of bulk physics defined by Einstein-Hilbert gravity coupled to thin domain walls and restrict to solutions with spherical symmetry. The cosmological constant is allowed to change across the domain wall, modeling more complicated Einstein-scalar systems where the scalar potential has multiple minima. In particular, the cosmological constant can become positive in the interior. However, in the above context, we show that inflating bubbles are never produced by smooth Euclidean saddles to asymptotically AdS path integrals. The obstacle is a direct parallel to the well-known obstruction to creating inflating universes by tunneling from flat space. In contrast, we do find good saddles that create so-called "bag-of-gold" geometries which, in addition to their single asymptotic region, also have an additional large semi-classical region located behind both past and future event horizons. Furthermore, without fine-tuning model parameters, using multiple domain walls we find Euclidean geometries that create arbitrarily large bags-of-gold inside a black hole of fixed horizon size, and thus at fixed Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. Indeed, with our symmetries and in our class of models, such solutions provide the unique semi-classical saddle for appropriately designed (microcanonical) path integrals. This strengthens a classic tension between such spacetimes and the CFT density of states, similar to that in the black hole information problem.

Phases of Holographic Hawking Radiation on spatially compact spacetimes

We study phases of equilibrium Hawking radiation in $d$-dimensional holographic CFTs on spatially compact spacetimes with two black holes. In the particular phases chosen the dual $(d+1)$-dimensional bulk solutions describe a variety of black funnels and droplets. In the former the CFT readily conducts heat between the two black holes, but it in the latter such conduction is highly suppressed. While the generic case can be understood in certain extreme limits of parameters on general grounds, we focus on CFTs on specific geometries conformally equivalent to a pair of $d \ge 4$ AdS${}_d$-Schwarzschild black holes of radius $R$. Such cases allow perturbative analyses of non-uniform funnels associated with Gregory-Laflamme zero-modes. For $d=4$ we construct a phase diagram for pure funnels and droplets by constructing the desired bulk solutions numerically. The fat non-uniform funnel is a particular interesting phase that dominates at small $R$ (due to having lowest free energy) despite being sub-dominant in the perturbative regime. The uniform funnel dominates at large $R$, and droplets and thin funnels dominate at certain intermediate values. The thin funnel phase provides a mystery as it dominates over our other phases all that way to a critical $R_{\mathrm{turn}}$ beyond which it fails to exist. The free energy of the system thus appears to be discontinuous at $R_{\mathrm{turn}}$, but such discontinuities are forbidden by the 2nd law. A new more-dominant phase is thus required near $R_{\mathrm{turn}}$ but the nature of this phase remains unclear.

Simple Perturbatively Traversable Wormholes from Bulk Fermions

A new class of traversable wormholes was recently constructed which relies only on local bulk dynamics rather than an explicit coupling between distinct boundaries. Here we begin with a four-dimensional Weyl fermion field of any mass $m$ propagating on a classical background defined by a ${\mathbb Z}_2$ quotient of (rotating) BTZ $\times \, S^1$. This setup allows one to compute the fermion stress-energy tensor exactly. For appropriate boundary conditions around a non-contractible curve, perturbative back-reaction at any $m$ renders the associated wormhole traversable and suggests it can become eternally traversable at the limit where the background becomes extremal. A key technical step is the proper formulation of the method of images for fermions in curved spacetime. We find the stress-energy of spinor fields to have important kinematic differences from that of scalar fields, typically causing the sign of the integrated null stress-energy (and thus in many cases the sign of the time delay/advance) to vary around the throat of the wormhole. Similar effects may arise for higher-spin fields.

Traversable Asymptotically Flat Wormholes with Short Transit Times

We construct traversable wormholes by starting with simple four-dimensional classical solutions respecting the null energy condition and containing a pair of oppositely charged black holes connected by a non-traversable wormhole. We then consider the perturbative back-reaction of bulk quantum fields in Hartle-Hawking states. Our geometries have zero cosmological constant and are asymptotically flat except for a cosmic string stretching to infinity that is used to hold the black holes apart. Another cosmic string wraps the non-contractible cycle through the wormhole, and its quantum fluctuations provide the negative energy needed for traversability. Our setting is closely related to the non-perturbative construction of Maldacena, Milekhin, and Popov (MMP), but the analysis is complementary. In particular, we consider cases where back-reaction slows, but fails to halt, the collapse of the wormhole interior, so that the wormhole is traversable only at sufficiently early times. For non-extremal backgrounds, we find the integrated null energy along the horizon of the classical background to be exponentially small, and thus traversability to be exponentially fragile. Nevertheless, if there are no larger perturbations, and for appropriately timed signals, a wormhole with mouths separated by a distance $d$ becomes traversable with a minimum transit time $t_{\text{min transit}} = d + \text{logs}$. Thus $\frac{t_{\text{min transit}}}{d}$ is smaller than for the eternally traversable MMP wormholes by more than a factor of 2, and approaches the value that, at least in higher dimensions, would be the theoretical minimum. For contrast we also briefly consider a `cosmological wormhole' solution where the back-reaction has the opposite sign, so that negative energy from quantum fields makes the wormhole harder to traverse.

The entropy of bulk quantum fields and the entanglement wedge of an evaporating black hole

Bulk quantum fields are often said to contribute to the generalized entropy $\frac{A}{4G_N} +S_{\mathrm{bulk}}$ only at $O(1)$. Nonetheless, in the context of evaporating black holes, $O(1/G_N)$ gradients in $S_{\mathrm{bulk}}$ can arise due to large boosts, introducing a quantum extremal surface far from any classical extremal surface. We examine the effect of such bulk quantum effects on quantum extremal surfaces (QESs) and the resulting entanglement wedge in a simple two-boundary $2d$ bulk system defined by Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity coupled to a 1+1 CFT. Turning on a coupling between one boundary and a further external auxiliary system which functions as a heat sink allows a two-sided otherwise-eternal black hole to evaporate on one side. We find the generalized entropy of the QES to behave as expected from general considerations of unitarity, and in particular that ingoing information disappears from the entanglement wedge after a scambling time $\fracβ{2π} \ln ΔS + O(1)$ in accord with expectations for holographic implementations of the Hayden-Preskill protocol. We also find an interesting QES phase transition at what one might call the Page time for our process.

One-loop universality of holographic codes

Recent work showed holographic error correcting codes to have simple universal features at $O(1/G)$. In particular, states of fixed Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) area in such codes are associated with flat entanglement spectra indicating maximal entanglement between appropriate subspaces. We extend such results to one-loop order ($O(1)$ corrections) by controlling both higher-derivative corrections to the bulk effective action and dynamical quantum fluctuations below the cutoff. This result clarifies the relation between the bulk path integral and the quantum code, and implies that i) simple tensor network models of holography continue to match the behavior of holographic CFTs beyond leading order in $G$, ii) the relation between bulk and boundary modular Hamiltonians derived by Jafferis, Lewkowycz, Maldacena, and Suh holds as an operator equation on the code subspace and not just in code-subspace expectation values, and iii) the code subspace is invariant under an appropriate notion of modular flow. A final corollary requires interesting cancelations to occur in the bulk renormalization-group flow of holographic quantum codes. Intermediate technical results include showing the Lewkowycz-Maldacena computation of RT entropy to take the form of a Hamilton-Jacobi variation of the action with respect to boundary conditions, corresponding results for higher-derivative actions, and generalizations to allow RT surfaces with finite conical angles.

Flat entanglement spectra in fixed-area states of quantum gravity

We use the Einstein-Hilbert gravitational path integral to investigate gravitational entanglement at leading order $O(1/G)$. We argue that semiclassical states prepared by a Euclidean path integral have the property that projecting them onto a subspace in which the Ryu-Takayanagi or Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi surface has definite area gives a state with a flat entanglement spectrum at this order in gravitational perturbation theory. This means that the reduced density matrix can be approximated as proportional to the identity to the extent that its Renyi entropies $S_n$ are independent of $n$ at this order. The $n$-dependence of $S_n$ in more general states then arises from sums over the RT/HRT-area, which are generally dominated by different values of this area for each $n$. This provides a simple picture of gravitational entanglement, bolsters the connection between holographic systems and tensor network models, clarifies the bulk interpretation of algebraic centers which arise in the quantum error-correcting description of holography, and strengthens the connection between bulk and boundary modular Hamiltonians described by Jafferis, Lewkowycz, Maldacena, and Suh.

CFT sewing as the dual of AdS cut-and-paste

The CPT map allows two states of a quantum field theory to be sewn together over CPT-conjugate partial Cauchy surfaces $R_1,R_2$ to make a state on a new spacetime. We study the holographic dual of this operation in the case where the original states are CPT-conjugate within $R_1,R_2$ to leading order in the bulk Newton constant $G$, and where the bulk duals are dominated by classical bulk geometries $g_1,g_2$. For states of fixed area on the $R_1,R_2$ HRT-surfaces, we argue that the bulk geometry $g_1 \# g_2$ dual to the newly sewn state is given by deleting the entanglement wedges of $R_1,R_2$ from $g_1,g_2$, gluing the remaining complementary entanglement wedges of ${\bar R}_1, {\bar R}_2$ together across the HRT surface, and solving the equations of motion to the past and future. The argument uses the bulk path integral and assumes it to be dominated by a certain natural saddle. For states where the HRT area is not fixed, the same bulk cut-and-paste is dual to a modified sewing that produces a generalization of the canonical purification state $\sqrtρ$ discussed recently by Dutta and Faulkner. Either form of the construction can be used to build CFT states dual to bulk geometries associated with multipartite reflected entropy.

A perturbative perspective on self-supporting wormholes

We describe a class of wormholes that generically become traversable after incorporating gravitational back-reaction from linear quantum fields satisfying appropriate (periodic or anti-periodic) boundary conditions around a non-contractible cycle, but with natural boundary conditions at infinity (i.e., without additional boundary interactions). The class includes both asymptotically flat and asymptotically AdS examples. Simple asymptotically AdS$_3$ or asymptotically AdS$_3 \times S^1$ examples with a single periodic scalar field are then studied in detail. When the examples admit a smooth extremal limit, our perturbative analysis indicates the back-reacted wormhole remains traversable at later and later times as this limit is approached. This suggests that a fully non-perturbative treatment would find a self-supporting eternal traversable wormhole. While the general case remains to be analyzed in detail, the likely relation of the above effect to other known instabilities of extreme black holes may make the construction of eternal traversable wormholes more straightforward than previously expected.

Restricted Maximin surfaces and HRT in generic black hole spacetimes

The AdS/CFT understanding of CFT entanglement is based on HRT surfaces in the dual bulk spacetime. While such surfaces need not exist in sufficiently general spacetimes, the maximin construction demonstrates that they can be found in any smooth asymptotically locally AdS spacetime without horizons or with only Kasner-like singularities. In this work, we introduce restricted maximin surfaces anchored to a particular boundary Cauchy slice $C_\partial$. We show that the result agrees with the original unrestricted maximin prescription when the restricted maximin surface lies in a smooth region of spacetime. We then use this construction to extend the existence theorem for HRT surfaces to generic charged or spinning AdS black holes whose mass-inflation singularities are not Kasner-like. We also discuss related issues in time-independent charged wormholes.

Causal holographic information does not satisfy the linearized quantum focusing condition

The Hubeny-Rangamani causal holographic information (CHI) defined by a region $R$ of a holographic quantum field theory (QFT) is a modern version of the idea that the area of event horizons might be related to an entropy. Here the event horizon lives in a dual gravitational bulk theory with Newton's constant $G_{\rm bulk}$, and the relation involves a factor of $4G_{\rm bulk}$. The fact that CHI is bounded below by the von Neumann entropy $S$ suggests that CHI is coarse-grained. Its properties could thus differ markedly from those of $S$. In particular, recent results imply that when $d\le 4$ holographic QFTs are perturbatively coupled to $d$-dimensional gravity, the combined system satisfies the so-called quantum focusing condition (QFC) at leading order in the new gravitational coupling $G_d$ when the QFT entropy is taken to be that of von Neumann. However, by studying states dual to spherical bulk (anti--de Sitter) Schwarschild black holes in the conformal frame for which the boundary is a $(2+1)$-dimensional de Sitter space, we find the QFC defined by CHI is violated even when perturbing about a Killing horizon and using a single null congruence. Since it is known that a generalized second law (GSL) holds in this context, our work demonstrates that the QFC is not required in order for an entropy, or an entropy-like quantity, to satisfy such a GSL.
