Can Hamiltonians be boundary observables in Parametrized Field Theories?

It has been argued that holography in gravitational theories is related to the existence of a particularly useful Gauss Law that allows energy to be measured at the boundary. The present work investigates the extent to which such Gauss Laws follow from diffeomorphism invariance. We study parametrized field theories, which are a class of diffeomorphism-invariant theories without gravity. We find that the Hamiltonian for parametrized field theories vanishes on shell even in the presence of a boundary and under a variety of boundary conditions. We conclude that parametrized theories have no useful Gauss Law, consistent with the absence of holography in these theories.

Holographic models of de Sitter QFTs

We describe the dynamics of strongly coupled field theories in de Sitter spacetime using the holographic gauge/gravity duality. The main motivation for this is to explore the possibility of dynamical phase transitions during cosmological evolution. Specifically, we study two classes of theories: (i) conformal field theories on de Sitter in the static patch which are maintained in equilibrium at temperatures that may differ from the de Sitter temperature and (ii) confining gauge theories on de Sitter spacetime. In the former case we show the such states make sense from the holographic viewpoint in that they have regular bulk gravity solutions. In the latter situation we add to the evidence for a confinement/deconfinement transition for a large N planar gauge theory as the cosmological acceleration is increased past a critical value. For the field theories we study, the critical acceleration corresponds to a de Sitter temperature which is less than the Minkowski space deconfinement transition temperature by a factor of the spacetime dimension.

The IR stability of de Sitter QFT: results at all orders

We show that the Hartle-Hawking vacuum for theories of interacting massive scalars in de Sitter space is both perturbatively well-defined and stable in the IR. Correlation functions in this state may be computed on the Euclidean section and Wick-rotated to Lorentz-signature. The results are manifestly de Sitter-invariant and contain only the familiar UV singularities. More importantly, the connected parts of all Lorentz-signature correlators decay at large separations of their arguments. Our results apply to all cases in which the free Euclidean vacuum is well defined, including scalars with masses belonging to both the complementary and principal series of $SO(D,1)$. This suggests that interacting QFTs in de Sitter -- including higher spin fields -- are perturbatively IR-stable at least when i) the Euclidean vacuum of the zero-coupling theory exists and ii) corresponding Lorentz-signature zero-coupling correlators decay at large separations. This work has significant overlap with a paper by Stefan Hollands, which is being released simultaneously.

The IR stability of de Sitter: Loop corrections to scalar propagators

We compute 1-loop corrections to Lorentz-signature de Sitter-invariant 2-point functions defined by the interacting Euclidean vacuum for massive scalar quantum fields with cubic and quartic interactions. Our results apply to all masses for which the free Euclidean de Sitter vacuum is well-defined, including values in both the complimentary and the principal series of SO(D,1). In dimensions where the interactions are renormalizeable we provide absolutely convergent integral representations of the corrections. These representations suffice to analytically extract the leading behavior of the 2-point functions at large separations and may also be used for numerical computations. The interacting propagators decay at long distances at least as fast as one would naively expect, suggesting that such interacting de Sitter invariant vacuua are well-defined and are well-behaved in the IR. In fact, in some cases the interacting propagators decay faster than any free propagator with any value of $M^2> 0$.

Hawking radiation in large N strongly-coupled field theories

We consider strongly coupled field theories at large N on black hole backgrounds. At sufficiently high Hawking temperature T_H, one expects a phase where the black hole is in equilibrium with a deconfined plasma. We explore this phase in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, and argue that two possible behaviors may result. At a given Hawking temperature T_H, field theories on large black hole backgrounds will couple strongly to the plasma and will be dual to novel bulk spacetimes having a single connected horizon which we dub {\it black funnels}. We construct examples of black funnels in low spacetime dimensions for different classes of field theory black holes. In this case, perturbing the equilibrium state results in the field theory exchanging heat with the black hole at a rate typical of conduction through deconfined plasma. In contrast, we argue that due to the finite physical size of plasma excitations, smaller black holes will couple only weakly to the field theory excitations. This situation is dual to bulk solutions containing two disconnected horizons which remain to be constructed. Here perturbations lead to heat exchange at a level typical of confined phases, even when T_H remains far above any deconfinement transition. At least at large N and strong coupling, these two behaviors are separated by a sharp transition. Our results also suggest a richer class of brane-world black holes than hitherto anticipated.

The dangers of extremes

While extreme black hole spacetimes with smooth horizons are known at the level of mathematics, we argue that the horizons of physical extreme black holes are effectively singular. Test particles encounter a singularity the moment they cross the horizon, and only objects with significant back-reaction can fall across a smooth (now non-extreme) horizon. As a result, classical interior solutions for extreme black holes are theoretical fictions that need not be reproduced by any quantum mechanical model. This observation suggests that significant quantum effects might be visible outside extreme or nearly extreme black holes. It also suggests that the microphysics of such black holes may be very different from that of their Schwarzschild cousins.

Uniqueness of Extremal Kerr and Kerr-Newman Black Holes

We prove that the only four dimensional, stationary, rotating, asymptotically flat (analytic) vacuum black hole with a single degenerate horizon is given by the extremal Kerr solution. We also prove a similar uniqueness theorem for the extremal Kerr-Newman solution. This closes a longstanding gap in the black hole uniqueness theorems.

No chiral truncation of quantum log gravity?

At the classical level, chiral gravity may be constructed as a consistent truncation of a larger theory called log gravity by requiring that left-moving charges vanish. In turn, log gravity is the limit of topologically massive gravity (TMG) at a special value of the coupling (the chiral point). We study the situation at the level of linearized quantum fields, focussing on a unitary quantization. While the TMG Hilbert space is continuous at the chiral point, the left-moving Virasoro generators become ill-defined and cannot be used to define a chiral truncation. In a sense, the left-moving asymptotic symmetries are spontaneously broken at the chiral point. In contrast, in a non-unitary quantization of TMG, both the Hilbert space and charges are continuous at the chiral point and define a unitary theory of chiral gravity at the linearized level.

Black funnels and droplets from the AdS C-metrics

We recently argued that the dynamics of strongly coupled field theories in black hole backgrounds is related via the AdS/CFT correspondence to two new classes of AdS black hole solutions: black funnels, and black droplets suspended above a second disconnected horizon. The funnel solutions are dual to black holes coupling strongly to a field theory plasma. In contrast, the droplet solutions describe black holes coupling only weakly. We continue our investigation of these solutions and construct a wide variety of examples from the AdS C-metric in four bulk spacetime dimensions. The solutions we find are dual to field theories on spatially compact universes with Killing horizons.

No Dynamics in the Extremal Kerr Throat

Motivated by the Kerr/CFT conjecture, we explore solutions of vacuum general relativity whose asymptotic behavior agrees with that of the extremal Kerr throat, sometimes called the Near-Horizon Extreme Kerr (NHEK) geometry. We argue that all such solutions are diffeomorphic to the NHEK geometry itself. The logic proceeds in two steps. We first argue that certain charges must vanish at all times for any solution with NHEK asymptotics. We then analyze these charges in detail for linearized solutions. Though one can choose the relevant charges to vanish at any initial time, these charges are not conserved. As a result, requiring the charges to vanish at all times is a much stronger condition. We argue that all solutions satisfying this condition are diffeomorphic to the NHEK metric.

On the Stress Tensor of Kerr/CFT

The recently-conjectured Kerr/CFT correspondence posits a field theory dual to dynamics in the near-horizon region of an extreme Kerr black hole with certain boundary conditions. We construct a boundary stress tensor for this theory via covariant phase space techniques. The structure of the stress tensor indicates that any dual theory is a discrete light cone quantum theory, in agreement with recent arguments by Balasubramanian et al. The key technical step in our construction is the addition of an appropriate counter-term to the symplectic structure, which is necessary to make the theory fully covariant and to resolve a subtle problem involving the integrability of charges.

Solving the Problem of Time in Mini-superspace: Measurement of Dirac Observables

One solution to the so-called problem of time is to construct certain Dirac observables, sometimes called evolving constants of motion. There has been some discussion in the literature about the interpretation of such observables, and in particular whether single Dirac observables can be measured. Here we clarify the situation by describing a class of interactions that can be said to implement measurements of such observables. Along the way, we describe a useful notion of perturbation theory for the rigging map eta of group averaging (sometimes loosely called the physical state "projector"), which maps states from the auxiliary Hilbert space to the physical Hilbert space.

Unitarity and Holography in Gravitational Physics

Because the gravitational Hamiltonian is a pure boundary term on-shell, asymptotic gravitational fields store information in a manner not possible in local field theories. This fact has consequences for both perturbative and non-perturbative quantum gravity. In perturbation theory about an asymptotically flat collapsing black hole, the algebra generated by asymptotic fields on future null infinity within any neighborhood of spacelike infinity contains a complete set of observables. Assuming that the same algebra remains complete at the non-perturbative quantum level, we argue that either 1) the S-matrix is unitary or 2) the dynamics in the region near timelike, null, and spacelike infinity is not described by perturbative quantum gravity about flat space. We also consider perturbation theory about a collapsing asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) black hole, where we show that the algebra of boundary observables within any neighborhood of any boundary Cauchy surface is similarly complete. Whether or not this algebra continues to be complete non-perturbatively, the assumption that the Hamiltonian remains a boundary term implies that information available at the AdS boundary at any one time t_1 remains present at this boundary at any other time t_2.

Quantum geometry and gravitational entropy

Most quantum states have wavefunctions that are widely spread over the accessible Hilbert space and hence do not have a good description in terms of a single classical geometry. In order to understand when geometric descriptions are possible, we exploit the AdS/CFT correspondence in the half-BPS sector of asymptotically AdS_5 x S^5 universes. In this sector we devise a "coarse-grained metric operator" whose eigenstates are well described by a single spacetime topology and geometry. We show that such half-BPS universes have a non-vanishing entropy if and only if the metric is singular, and that the entropy arises from coarse-graining the geometry. Finally, we use our entropy formula to find the most entropic spacetimes with fixed asymptotic moments beyond the global charges.

Black Holes, AdS, and CFTs

This brief conference proceeding attempts to explain the implications of the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence for black hole entropy in a language accessible to relativists and other non-string theorists. The main conclusion is that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy S_{BH} is the density of states associated with certain superselections sectors, defined by what may be called the algebra of boundary observables. Interestingly, while there is a valid context in which this result can be restated as "S_{BH} counts all states inside the black hole," there may also be another in which it may be restated as "$S_{BH}$ does not count all states inside the black hole, but only those that are distinguishable from the outside." The arguments and conclusions represent the author's translation of the community's collective wisdom, combined with a few recent results. Holographic Thought Experiments

The Hamiltonian of classical anti-de Sitter gravity is a pure boundary term on-shell. If this remains true in non-perturbative quantum gravity then i) boundary observables will evolve unitarily in time and ii) the algebra of boundary observables is the same at all times. In particular, information available at the boundary at any one time t_1 remains available at any other time t_2. Since there is also a sense in which the equations of motion propagate information into the bulk, these observations raise what may appear to be potential paradoxes concerning simultaneous (or spacelike separated) measurements of non-commuting observables, one at the asymptotic boundary and one in the interior. We argue that such potentially paradoxical settings always involve a breakdown of semi-classical gravity. In particular, we present evidence that making accurate holographic measurements over short timescales radically alters the familiar notion of causality. We also describe certain less intrinsically paradoxical settings which illustrate the above boundary unitarity and render the notion more concrete.

Supersymmetric Multi-trace Boundary Conditions in AdS

Boundary conditions for massive fermions are investigated in AdS_d for $d \ge 2$. For fermion masses in the range $0 \le |m| < 1/2\ell$ with $\ell$ the AdS length, the standard notion of normalizeability allows a choice of boundary conditions. As in the case of scalars at or slightly above the Breitenlohner-Freedman (BF) bound, such boundary conditions correspond to multi-trace deformations of any CFT dual. By constructing appropriate boundary superfields, for d=3,4,5 we identify joint scalar/fermion boundary conditions which preserve either ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry or ${\cal N}=1$ superconformal symmetry on the boundary. In particular, we identify boundary conditions corresponding via AdS/CFT (at large N) to a 595-parameter family of double-trace marginal deformations of the low-energy theory of N M2-branes which preserve ${\cal N} =1$ superconformal symmetry. We also establish that (at large N and large 't Hooft coupling $λ$) there are no marginal or relevant multi-trace deformations of 3+1 ${\cal N} =4$ super Yang-Mills which preserve even ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry.

Group Averaging for de Sitter free fields

Perturbative gravity about global de Sitter space is subject to linearization-stability constraints. Such constraints imply that quantum states of matter fields couple consistently to gravity {\it only} if the matter state has vanishing de Sitter charges; i.e., only if the state is invariant under the symmetries of de Sitter space. As noted by Higuchi, the usual Fock spaces for matter fields contain no de Sitter-invariant states except the vacuum, though a new Hilbert space of de Sitter invariant states can be constructed via so-called group-averaging techniques. We study this construction for free scalar fields of arbitrary positive mass in any dimension, and for linear vector and tensor gauge fields in any dimension. Our main result is to show in each case that group averaging converges for states containing a sufficient number of particles. We consider general $N$-particle states with smooth wavefunctions, though we obtain somewhat stronger results when the wavefunctions are finite linear combinations of de Sitter harmonics. Along the way we obtain explicit expressions for general boost matrix elements in a familiar basis.
