Derived equivalences for hereditary Artin algebras

We study the role of the Serre functor in the theory of derived equivalences. Let $\mathcal{A}$ be an abelian category and let $(\mathcal{U}, \mathcal{V})$ be a $t$-structure on the bounded derived category $D^b \mathcal{A}$ with heart $\mathcal{H}$. We investigate when the natural embedding $\mathcal{H} \to D^b \mathcal{A}$ can be extended to a triangle equivalence $D^b \mathcal{H} \to D^b \mathcal{A}$. Our focus of study is the case where $\mathcal{A}$ is the category of finite-dimensional modules over a finite-dimensional hereditary algebra. In this case, we prove that such an extension exists if and only if the $t$-structure is bounded and the aisle $\mathcal{U}$ of the $t$-structure is closed under the Serre functor.

A classification of nullity classes in the derived category of a ring

For a commutative Noetherian ring $R$ with finite Krull dimension, we study the nullity classes in $D^c_{fg}(R)$, the full triangulated subcategory $D^c_{fg}(R)$ of the derived category $D(R)$ consisting of objects which can be represented by cofibrant objects with each degree finitely generated. In the light of perversity functions over the prime spectrum $\mathrm{Spec} R$, we prove that there is a complete invariant of nullity classes thus that of aisles (or equivalently, $t$-structures) in $D^c_{fg}(R)$.

Affine weakly regular tensor triangulated categories

We prove that the Balmer spectrum of a tensor triangulated category is homeomorphic to the Zariski spectrum of its graded central ring, provided the triangulated category is generated by its tensor unit and the graded central ring is noetherian and regular in a weak sense. There follows a classification of all thick subcategories, and the result extends to the compactly generated setting to yield a classification of all localizing subcategories as well as the analog of the telescope conjecture. This generalizes results of Shamir for commutative ring spectra.

One-connectivity and finiteness of Hamiltonian $S^1$-manifolds with minimal fixed sets

Let the circle act effectively in a Hamiltonian fashion on a compact symplectic manifold $(M, ω)$. Assume that the fixed point set $M^{S^1}$ has exactly two components, $X$ and $Y$, and that $\dim(X) + \dim(Y) +2 = \dim(M)$. We first show that $X$, $Y$ and $M$ are simply connected. Then we show that, up to $S^1$-equivariant diffeomorphism, there are finitely many such manifolds in each dimension. Moreover, we show that in low dimensions, the manifold is unique in a certain category. We use techniques from both areas of symplectic geometry and geometric topology.

Rational models of the complement of a subpolyhedron in a manifold with boundary

Let W be a compact simply connected triangulated manifold with boundary and $K \subset W$ be a subpolyhedron. We construct an algebraic model of the rational homotopy type of the complement $W \setminus K$ out of a model of the map of pairs $(K, K \cap \partial W) \to (W,\partial W)$ under some high codimension hypothesis. We deduce the rational homotopy invariance of the configuration space of two points in a compact manifold with boundary under 2-connectedness hypotheses. Also, we exhibit nice explicits models of these configuration spaces for a large class of compact manifolds.

Pretty rational models for Poincaré duality pairs

We prove that a large class of Poincaré duality pairs admit rational models (in the sense of Sullivan) of a particularly nice form associated to some Poincaré duality CDGA. These models have applications in particular to the construction of rational models of configuration spaces in compact manifolds with boundary.

$t$-structures for hereditary categories

We study aisles in the derived category of a hereditary abelian category. Given an aisle, we associate a sequence of subcategories of the abelian category by considering the different homologies of the aisle. We then obtain a sequence, called a narrow sequence. We then prove that a narrow sequence in a hereditary abelian category consists of a nondecreasing sequence of wide subcategories, together with a tilting torsion class in each of these wide subcategories. Furthermore, there are relations these torsion classes have to satisfy. These results are sufficient to recover known classifications of t-structures for smooth projective curves, and for finitely generated modules over a Dedekind ring. In some special cases, including the case of finite dimensional modules over a finite dimensional hereditary algebra, we can reduce even further, effectively decoupling the different tilting torsion theories one chooses in the wide subcategories.

Implications of the Ganea Condition

Suppose the spaces X and X cross A have the same Lusternik-Schnirelmann category: cat(X cross A)= cat(X). Then there is a strict inequality cat(X cross (A halfsmash B)) < cat (X) + cat(A halfsmash B) for every space B, provided the connectivity of A is large enough (depending only on X). This is applied to give a partial verification of a conjecture of Iwase on the category of products of spaces with spheres.

The cone length and category of maps: pushouts, products and fibrations

For any collection of spaces A, we investigate two non-negative integer homotopy invariants of maps: l_A(f), the A-cone length of f, and L_A(f), the A-category of f. When A is the collection of all spaces, these are the cone length and category of f, respectively, both of which have been studied previously. The following results have been obtained: (1) For a map of one homotopy pushout diagram into another, we derive an upper bound for I_A and L_A of the induced map of homotopy pushouts in terms of I_A and L_A of the other maps. This has many applications including an inequality for I_A and L_A of the maps in a mapping of one mapping cone sequence into another. (2) We establish an upper bound for I_A and L_A of the product of two maps in terms of I_A and L_A of the given maps and the A-cone length of their domains. (3) We study our invariants in a pullback square and obtain as a consequence an upper bound for the A-cone length and A-category of the total space of a fibration in terms of the A-cone length and A-category of the base and fiber. We conclude with several remarks, examples and open questions.
