Invariant measures for the one-dimensional stochastic Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations

We investigate the long-time behaviour of a one-dimensional compressible viscous fluid with general capillarity and density dependent viscosity, driven by a stochastic additive noise. In particular, we prove the existence of invariant measures by applying the Krylov-Bogoliubov method in a setting where the dynamics is supported on a non-complete phase space. This analysis is further enhanced by the derivation of a refined stability result determining the continuous dependence with respect to the initial data. The present paper exhibits some properties and results for Korteweg fluids which are not known in absence of the capillarity tensor. In particular, we prove that the Markov semigroup associated with strong solutions is Feller and we can consider ranges of the adiabatic and viscosity exponents $γ$ and $α$ larger than those available in the current ergodic literature for compressible fluids. Also the interplay between the choice of the physical domain and the use of a damping term is discussed.

Global Existence and Uniqueness of Strong Solutions for a Phase Transition Model in Atmospheric Dynamics

In this work, we study a phase transition model in atmospheric dynamics, inspired by the works [6,14,15], which analyze the primitive equations governing the evolution of velocity, temperature, and specific humidity. The main difficulty arises from the presence of a multivalued discontinuous nonlinear term in the temperature and in the humidity equations, describing the formation of precipitations, which becomes active under supersaturation conditions. To overcome this issue, we introduce a regularized formulation that ensures the existence and uniqueness of approximate solutions. By employing classical compactness arguments, we then establish the existence of a strong solution to the original model. Additionally, we establish uniqueness under a conditional and physically meaningful assumption. This approach allows us to provide a rigorous justification of the tropical climate model on the whole space $\mathbb{R}^2$, while avoiding the introduction of a viscosity term in the humidity equation.

Large bulk viscosity limit for compressible MHD equations in critical Besov spaces

We study the large bulk viscosity limit for the compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations in two and three dimensions. For arbitrarily large initial data in critical Besov spaces, we prove the global well-posedness of strong solutions and establish their convergence, with explicit quantitative rates, to solutions of the incompressible MHD system, as the bulk viscosity parameter tends to infinity. As an application of this singular-limit analysis, we construct global smooth solutions to the compressible MHD equations whose magnetic field undergoes reconnection, thereby extending to the compressible regime the reconnection scenarios previously identified for incompressible flows.

Inviscid incompressible limit for capillary fluids with density dependent viscosity

The asymptotic limit of the 2D and 3D Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system for barotropic capillary fluids with density dependent viscosities in the low Mach number and vanishing viscosity regime is established. In the relative energy framework, we prove the convergence of weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system to the strong solution of the incompressible Euler system. The convergence is obtained through the use of suitable dispersive estimates for an acoustic system altered by the presence of the Korteweg tensor.

Weak martingale solutions to the stochastic 1D Quantum-Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper we prove the existence of global weak dissipative martingale solutions for a one-dimensional compressible fluid model with capillarity and density dependent viscosity, driven by random initial data and a stochastic forcing term. These solutions are weak in both PDEs and Probability sense and may have vacuum regions. The proof relies on the construction of an approximating system which provides extra dissipation properties and the convergence is based on an appropriate truncation of the velocity field in the momentum equation and a stochastic compactness argument

Generalized dissipative solutions to free boundary compressible viscous models

We study free boundary compressible viscous models that may include nonlinear viscosities. These are compressible/incompressible Navier-Stokes type systems for a non-Newtonian stress tensor. They describe the motion of a possibly non-Newtonian fluid in free flow and in congested regions. In the congested regions it appears the pressure that is the Lagrange multiplier associated with the incompressibility constraint, while in free flows it is a pressureless gas system. We establish the existence of generalized dissipative solutions in the case of in/out-flow boundary conditions and we also prove that if these solutions are smooth then they are classical solutions.

Global regularity for the one-dimensional stochastic Quantum-Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper we prove the global in time well-posedness of strong solutions to the Quantum-Navier-Stokes equation driven by random initial data and stochastic external force. In particular, we first give a general local well-posedness result. Then, by means of the Bresch-Desjardins entropy, higher order energy estimates, and a continuation argument we prove that the density never vanishes, and thus that local strong solutions are indeed global.

Blow up criteria for a fluid dynamical model arising in astrophysics

In this paper we deal with the existence of local strong solution for a perfect compressible viscous fluid, heat conductive and self gravitating, coupled with a first order kinetics used in astrophysical hydrodynamical models. In our setting the vacuum is allowed and as a byproduct of the existence result we get a blow-up criterion for the local strong solution. Moreover we prove a blow-up criterion for the local strong solutions in terms of the velocity gradient, the mass fraction gradient and the temperature similar to the well known Beale-Kato-Majda criterion for ideal incompressible flows.

The primitive equations of the polluted atmosphere as a weak and strong limit of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations in downwind-matching coordinates

A widely used approach to mathematically describe the atmosphere is to consider it as a geophysical fluid in a shallow domain -- and thus to model it using classical fluid dynamical equations combined with the explicit inclusion of an ε parameter representing the small aspect ratio of the physical domain. In our previous paper [15] we proved a weak convergence theorem for the polluted atmosphere described by the Navier-Stokes equations extended by an advection-diffusion equation. We obtained a justification of the generalised hydrostatic limit model including the pollution effect described for the case of classical, east-north-upwards oriented local Cartesian coordinates. Here we give a two-fold improvement of this statement. Firstly, we consider a meteorologically more meaningful coordinate system, incorporate the analytical consequences of this coordinate change into the governing equations, and verify that the weak convergence still holds for this altered system. Secondly, still considering this new, so-called downwind-matching coordinate system, we prove an analogous strong convergence result, which we make complete by providing a closely related existence theorem as well.

An anelastic approximation arising in astrophysics

We identify the asymptotic limit of the compressible non-isentropic Navier-Stokes system in the regime of low Mach, low Froude and high Reynolds number. The system is driven by a long range gravitational potential. We show convergence to an anelastic system for ill-prepared initial data. The proof is based on frequency localized Strichartz estimates for the acoustic equation based on the recent work of Metcalfe and Tataru.

Well/ill posedness for the Euler-Korteweg-Poisson system and related problems

We consider a general Euler-Korteweg-Poisson system in $R^3$, supplemented with the space periodic boundary conditions, where the quantum hydrodynamics equations and the classical fluid dynamics equations with capillarity are recovered as particular examples. We show that the system admits infinitely many global-in-time weak solutions for any sufficiently smooth initial data including the case of a vanishing initial density - the vacuum zones. Moreover, there is a vast family of initial data, for which the Cauchy problem possesses infinitely many dissipative weak solutions, i.e. the weak solutions satisfying the energy inequality. Finally, we establish the weak-strong uniqueness property in a class of solutions without vacuum.

Quasineutral limit, dispersion and oscillations for Korteweg type fluids

In the setting of general initial data and whole space we perform a rigorous analysis of the quasineutral limit for a hydrodynamical model of a viscous plasma with capillarity tensor represented by the Navier Stokes Korteweg Poisson system. We shall provide a detailed mathematical description of the convergence process by analyzing the dispersion of the fast oscillating acoustic waves. However the standard acoustic wave analysis is not sufficient to control the high frequency oscillations in the electric field but it is necessary to estimates the dispersive properties induced by the capillarity terms. Therefore by using these additional estimates we will be able to control, via compensated compactness, the quadratic nonlinearity of the stiff electric force field. In conclusion, opposite to the zero capillarity case \cite{DM12} where persistent space localized time high frequency oscillations need to be taken into account, we show that as $λ\to 0$, the density fluctuation $ρ^λ-1$ converges strongly to zero and the fluids behaves according to an incompressible dynamics.

The combined incompressible quasineutral limit of the stochastic Navier-Stokes-Poisson system

This paper deals with the combined incompressible quasineutral limit of the weak martingale solution of the compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson system perturbed by a stochastic forcing term in the whole space. In the framework of ill-prepared initial data, we show the convergence in law to a weak martingale solution of a stochastic incompressible Navier-Stokes system. The result holds true for any arbitrary nonlinear forcing term with suitable growth. The proof is based on the analysis of acoustic waves but since we are dealing with a stochastic partial differential equation, the existing deterministic tools for treating this second-order equation breakdown. Although this might seem as a minor modification, to handle the acoustic waves in the stochastic compressible Navier-Stokes system, we produce suitable dispersive estimate for first-order system of equations, which are an added value to the existing theory. As a by-product of this dispersive estimate analysis, we are also able to prove a convergence result in the case of the zero-electron-mass limit for a stochastic fluid dynamical plasma model.

Weak Dissipative solutions to a free-boundary problem for finitely extensible bead-spring chain molecules: variable viscosity coefficients

We investigate the global existence of weak solutions to a free boundary problem governing the evolution of finitely extensible bead-spring chains in dilute polymers. The free boundary in the present context is defined with regard to a density threshold of \r{ho} = 1, below which the fluid is modeled as compressible and above which the fluid is modeled as incompressible. The present article focuses on the physically relevant case in which the viscosity coefficients present in the system depend on the polymer number density, extending the earlier work [8]. We construct the weak solutions of the free boundary problem by perform ing the asymptotic limit as the adiabatic exponent γgoes to \infty for the macroscopic model introduced by Feireisl, Lu and Suli in [10] (see also [6]). The weak sequential stability of the family of dissipative (finite energy) weak solutions to the free boundary problem is also established.

High Mach number limit for Korteweg fluids with density dependent viscosity

The aim of this paper is to investigate the regime of high Mach number flows for compressible barotropic fluids of Korteweg type with density dependent viscosity. In particular we consider the models for isothermal capillary and quantum compressible fluids. For the capillary case we prove the existence of weak solutions and related properties for the system without pressure, and the convergence of the solution in the high Mach number limit. This latter is proved also in the quantum case for which a weak-strong uniqueness analysis is also discussed in the framework of the so-called "augmented" version of the system. Moreover, as byproduct of our results, in the case of a capillary fluid with a special choice of the initial velocity datum, we obtain an interesting property concerning the propagation of vacuum zones.

Dissipative martingale solutions of the stochastically forced Navier--Stokes--Poisson system on domains without boundary

We construct solutions to the randomly-forced Navier--Stokes--Poisson system in periodic three-dimensional domains or in the whole three-dimensional Euclidean space. These solutions are weak in the sense of PDEs and also weak in the sense of probability. As such, they satisfy the system in the sense of distributions and the underlying probability space and the stochastic driving force are also unknowns of the problem. Additionally, these solutions dissipate energy, satisfies a relative energy inequality in the sense of [4] and satisfy a renormalized form of the continuity equation in the sense of [5].
