Spectral multiplicity and nodal sets for generic torus-invariant metrics

Let a torus $T$ act freely on a closed manifold $M$ of dimension at least two. We demonstrate that, for a generic $T$-invariant Riemannian metric $g$ on $M$, each real $Δ_g$-eigenspace is an irreducible real representation of $T$ and, therefore, has dimension at most two. We also show that, for the generic $T$-invariant metric on $M$, if $u$ is a non-invariant real-valued $Δ_g$-eigenfunction that vanishes on some $T$-orbit, then the nodal set of $u$ is a connected smooth hypersurface whose complement has exactly two connected components.

On branched minimal immersions of surfaces by first eigenfunctions

It was proved by Montiel and Ros that for each conformal structure on a compact surface there is at most one metric which admits a minimal immersion into some unit sphere by first eigenfunctions. We generalize this theorem to the setting of metrics with conical singularities induced from branched minimal immersions by first eigenfunctions into spheres. Our primary motivation is the fact that metrics realizing maxima of the first non-zero Laplace eigenvalue are induced by minimal branched immersions into spheres. In particular, we show that the properties of such metrics induced from $\mathbb{S}^2$ differ significantly from the properties of those induced from $\mathbb{S}^m$ with $m>2$. This feature appears to be novel and needs to be taken into account in the existing proofs of the sharp upper bounds for the first non-zero eigenvalue of the Laplacian on the $2$-torus and the Klein bottle. In the present paper we address this issue and give a detailed overview of the complete proofs of these upper bounds following the works of Nadirashvili, Jakobson-Nadirashvili-Polterovich, El Soufi-Giacomini-Jazar, Nadirashvili-Sire and Petrides.

Large spectral gaps for Steklov eigenvalues under volume constraints and under localized conformal deformations

In this paper we construct compact manifolds with fixed boundary geometry which admit Riemannian metrics of unit volume with arbitrarily large Steklov spectral gap. We also study the effect of localized conformal deformations that fix the boundary geometry. For instance, we prove that it is possible to make the spectral gap arbitrarily large using conformal deformations which are localized on domains of small measure, as long as the support of the deformations contains and connects each component of the boundary.

On the Poisson relation for flat and spherical space forms

A general approach to proving that the length spectrum of a compact Riemannian manifold is an invariant of the Laplace spectrum comes from considering the wave trace, a spectrally determined tempered distribution. The Poisson relation states that the singularities of the wave trace can only occur at lengths of closed geodesics. Proving that the Poisson relation is an equality; i.e., every length of a closed geodesic is a singularity of the wave trace, yields an effective means of recovering the length spectrum from the Laplace spectrum. Regarding spaces of constant curvature this is known to be true for spaces of constant negative curvature. Continuing the study of space forms, we show that the Poisson relation is an equality for all flat manifolds, homogeneous lens spaces and three-dimensional lens spaces with fundamental group of prime order.

Lattice gas simulations of dynamical geometry in two dimensions

We present a hydrodynamic lattice gas model for two-dimensional flows on curved surfaces with dynamical geometry. This model is an extension to two dimensions of the dynamical geometry lattice gas model previously studied in one-dimension. We expand upon a variation of the two-dimensional flat space FHP model created by Frisch, Hasslacher and Pomeau, and independently by Wolfram, and modified by Boghosian, Love, and Meyer. We define a hydrodynamic lattice gas model on an arbitrary triangulation, whose flat space limit is the FHP model. Rules that change the geometry are constructed using the Pachner moves, which alter the triangulation but not the topology. We present results on the growth of the number of triangles as a function of time. Simulations show that the number of triangles lattice grows with time as the cube root of the number of time steps, in agreement a mean field prediction. We also present preliminary results on the distribution of curvature over a typical triangulation for these simulations.
