Flag Bott manifolds and the toric closure of a generic orbit associated to a generalized Bott manifold

To a direct sum of holomorphic line bundles, we can associate two fibrations, whose fibers are, respectively, the corresponding full flag manifold and the corresponding projective space. Iterating these procedures gives, respectively, a flag Bott tower and a generalized Bott tower. It is known that a generalized Bott tower is a toric manifold. However a flag Bott tower is not toric in general but we show that it is a GKM manifold, and we also show that for a given generalized Bott tower we can find the associated flag Bott tower so that the closure of a generic torus orbit in the latter is a blow-up of the former along certain invariant submanifolds. We use GKM theory together with toric geometric arguments.

Algebraic and geometric properties of flag Bott-Samelson varieties and applications to representations

We introduce the notion of flag Bott-Samelson variety as a generalization of Bott-Samelson variety and flag variety. Using a birational morphism from an appropriate Bott-Samelson variety to a flag Bott-Samelson variety, we compute Newton-Okounkov bodies of flag Bott-Samelson varieties as generalized string polytopes, which are applied to give polyhedral expressions for irreducible decompositions of tensor products of $G$-modules. Furthermore, we show that flag Bott-Samelson varieties are degenerated into flag Bott manifolds with higher rank torus actions, and find the Duistermaat-Heckman measures of the moment map images of flag Bott-Samelson varieties with the torus action together with invariant closed $2$-forms.

Flag Bott manifolds of general Lie type and their equivariant cohomology rings

In this article we introduce flag Bott manifolds of general Lie type as the total spaces of iterated flag bundles. They generalize the notion of flag Bott manifolds and generalized Bott manifolds, and admit nice torus actions. We calculate the torus equivariant cohomology rings of flag Bott manifolds of general Lie type.

Equivariant cobordism of torus orbifolds

Torus orbifolds are topological generalization of symplectic toric orbifolds. We give a construction of smooth orbifolds with torus actions whose boundary is a disjoint union of torus orbifolds using toric topological method. As a result, we show that any orientable locally standard torus orbifold is equivariantly cobordant to some copies of orbifold complex projective spaces. We also discuss some further equivariant cobordism results including the cases when torus orbifolds are actually torus manifolds.

The Gromov width of generalized Bott manifolds

By Delzant's theorem, closed symplectic toric manifolds are classified by the images of moment maps. In the case of a generalized Bott manifold, this image is a polytope $P$ combinatorially equivalent to the product of simplices. We compute the Gromov width of generalized Bott manifolds in terms of the defining inequalities of $P$.

A new construction of lens spaces

Let $T^n$ be the real $n$-torus group. We give a new definition of lens spaces and study the diffeomorphic classification of lens spaces. We show that any $3$-dimensional lens space $L(p; q)$ is $T^2$-equivariantly cobordant to zero. We also give some sufficient conditions for higher dimensional lens spaces $L(p; q_1, \ldots, q_n)$ to be $T^{n+1}$-equivariantly cobordant to zero. In 2005, B. Hanke showed that complex equivariant cobordism class of a lens space is trivial. Nevertheless, our proofs are constructive using toric topological arguments.

Embedded surfaces for symplectic circle actions

The purpose of this article is to characterize symplectic and Hamiltonian circle actions on symplectic manifolds in terms of symplectic embeddings of Riemann surfaces. More precisely, we will show that (1) if $(M,ω)$ admits a Hamiltonian $S^1$-action, then there exists an $S^1$-invariant symplectic $2$-sphere $S$ in $(M,ω)$ such that $\langle c_1(M), [S] \rangle > 0$, and (2) if the action is non-Hamiltonian, then there exists an $S^1$-invariant symplectic $2$-torus $T$ in $(M,ω)$ such that $\langle c_1(M), [T] \rangle = 0$. As applications, we will give a very simple proof of the following well-known theorem which was proved by Atiyah-Bott \cite{AB}, Lupton-Oprea \cite{LO}, and Ono \cite{O2} : suppose that $(M,ω)$ is a smooth closed symplectic manifold satisfying $c_1(TM)=λ\cdot [ω]$ for some $λ\in \R$ and let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group acting effectively on $M$ preserving $ω$. Then (1) if $λ< 0$, then $G$ must be trivial, (2) if $λ=0$, then the $G$-action is non-Hamiltonian, and (3) if $λ> 0$, then the $G$-action is Hamiltonian.

Semifree Hamiltonian circle actions on 6-dimensional symplectic manifolds with non-isolated fixed point set

Let $(M, ω)$ be a 6-dimensional closed symplectic manifold with a symplectic $S^1$-action with $M^{S^1} \neq \emptyset$ and $\dim M^{S^1} \leq 2$. Assume that $ω$ is integral with a generalized moment map $μ$. We first prove that the action is Hamiltonian if and only if $b_2^+(M_{\red})=1$, where $M_{\red}$ is any reduced space with respect to $μ$. It means that if the action is non-Hamiltonian, then $b_2^+(M_{\red}) \geq 2$. Secondly, we focus on the case when the action is semifree and Hamiltonian. We prove that if $M^{S^1}$ consists of surfaces, then the number $k$ of fixed surfaces with positive genera is at most four. In particular, if the extremal fixed surfaces are spheres, then $k$ is at most one. Finally, we prove that $k \neq 2$ and we construct some examples of 6-dimensional semifree Hamiltonian $S^1$-manifolds such that $M^{S^1}$ contains $k$ surfaces of positive genera for $k = 0$ and 4. Examples with $k=1$ and 3 were given in \cite{L2}.

Classification of complex projective towers up to dimension 8 and cohomological rigidity

A complex projective tower or simply a $\mathbb CP$-tower is an iterated complex projective fibrations starting from a point. In this paper we classify all 6-dimensional $\mathbb CP$-towers up to diffeomorphism, and as a consequence, we show that all such manifolds are cohomologically rigid, i.e., they are completely determined up to diffeomorphism by their cohomology rings. We also show that cohomological rigidity is not valid for 8-dimensional $\mathbb CP$-towers by classifying $\mathbb CP^1$-fibrations over $\mathbb CP^3$ up to diffeomorphism. As a corollary we show that such $\mathbb CP$-towers are diffeomorphic if they are homotopy equivalent.

$\mathbb{Q}$-trivial generalized Bott manifolds

When the cohomology ring of a generalized Bott manifold with $\mathbb{Q}$-coefficient is isomorphic to that of a product of complex projective spaces $\mathbb{C}P^{n_i}$, the generalized Bott manifold is said to be $\mathbb{Q}$-trivial. We find a necessary and sufficient condition for a generalized Bott manifold to be $\mathbb{Q}$-trivial. In particular, every $\mathbb{Q}$-trivial generalized Bott manifold is diffeomorphic to a $\prod_{n_i>1}\mathbb{C}P^{n_i}$-bundle over a $\mathbb{Q}$-trivial Bott manifold.

Topological classification of quasitoric manifolds with the second Betti number 2

A quasitoric manifold is a $2n$-dimensional compact smooth manifold with a locally standard action of an $n$-dimensional torus whose orbit space is a simple polytope. In this article, we classify quasitoric manifolds with the second Betti number $β_2=2$ topologically. Interestingly, they are distinguished by their cohomology rings up to homeomorphism.

Properties of Bott manifolds and cohomological rigidity

The cohomological rigidity problem for toric manifolds asks whether the cohomology ring of a toric manifold determines the topological type of the manifold. In this paper, we consider the problem with the class of one-twist Bott manifolds to get an affirmative answer to the problem. We also generalize the result to quasitoric manifolds. In doing so, we show that the twist number of a Bott manifold is well-defined and is equal to the cohomological complexity of the cohomology ring of the manifold. We also show that any cohomology Bott manifold is homeomorphic to a Bott manifold. All these results are also generalized to the case with $\mathbb Z_{(2)}$-coefficients, where $\mathbb Z_{(2)}$ is the localized ring at 2.

Toric cohomological rigidity of simple convex polytopes

A simple convex polytope $P$ is \emph{cohomologically rigid} if its combinatorial structure is determined by the cohomology ring of a quasitoric manifold over $P$. Not every $P$ has this property, but some important polytopes such as simplices or cubes are known to be cohomologically rigid. In this article we investigate the cohomological rigidity of polytopes and establish it for several new classes of polytopes including products of simplices. Cohomological rigidity of $P$ is related to the \emph{bigraded Betti numbers} of its \emph{Stanley--Reisner ring}, another important invariants coming from combinatorial commutative algebra.

Quasitoric manifolds over a product of simplices

A quasitoric manifold (resp. a small cover) is a $2n$-dimensional (resp. an $n$-dimensional) smooth closed manifold with an effective locally standard action of $(S^1)^n$ (resp. $(\mathbb Z_2)^n$) whose orbit space is combinatorially an $n$-dimensional simple convex polytope $P$. In this paper we study them when $P$ is a product of simplices. A generalized Bott tower over $\F$, where $\F=\C$ or $\R$, is a sequence of projective bundles of the Whitney sum of $\F$-line bundles starting with a point. Each stage of the tower over $\F$, which we call a generalized Bott manifold, provides an example of quasitoric manifolds (when $\F=\C$) and small covers (when $\F=\R$) over a product of simplices. It turns out that every small cover over a product of simplices is equivalent (in the sense of Davis and Januszkiewicz \cite{DJ}) to a generalized Bott manifold. But this is not the case for quasitoric manifolds and we show that a quasitoric manifold over a product of simplices is equivalent to a generalized Bott manifold if and only if it admits an almost complex structure left invariant under the action. Finally, we show that a quasitoric manifold $M$ over a product of simplices is homeomorphic to a generalized Bott manifold if $M$ has the same cohomology ring as a product of complex projective spaces with $\Q$ coefficients.
