Photoinduced Quantum Anomalous Hall States in the Topological Anderson Insulator

The realization of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect without magnetic doping attracts intensive interest since magnetically doped topological insulators usually possess inhomogeneity of ferromagnetic order. Here, we propose a different strategy to realize intriguing QAH states arising from the interplay of light and non-magnetic disorder in two-dimensional topologically trivial systems. By combining the Born approximation and Floquet theory, we show that a time-reversal invariant disorder-induced topological insulator, known as the topological Anderson insulator (TAI), would evolve into a time-reversal broken TAI and then into a QAH insulator by shining circularly polarized light. We utilize spin and charge Hall conductivities, which can be measured in experiments directly, to distinguish these three different topological phases. This work not only offers an exciting opportunity to realize the high-temperature QAH effect without magnetic orders, but also is important for applications of topological states to spintronics.

Topological excitonic corner states and nodal phase in bilayer quantum spin Hall insulators

Interaction induced topological states remain one of the fascinating phases in condensed matter physics. The exciton condensate has recently sparked renewed interest due to the discovery of new candidate materials and its driving force to realize exotic topological states. In this work, we explore the exciton orders induced high-order topology in the bilayer quantum spin Hall insulators and find that the topological excitonic corner states can be realized by tuning the gate and magnetic field. When an in-plane Zeeman field is applied to the system, two or four excitonic boundary-obstructed corner states emerge in the bilayer system for distinct possible $s$-wave excitonic pairings. Besides, we also find a two-dimensional excitonic Weyl nodal phase, which supports flat band edge states connecting the bulk Weyl nodes.

Doubled Moiré Flat Bands in Double-twisted Few Layer Graphite

We study the electronic structure of a double-twisted few layer graphite (DTFLG), which consists of three few layer graphite (FLG), i.e. ABA-stacked graphene multilayer, stacked with two twist angles. We consider two categories of DTFLG, alternately twisted case and chirally twisted one, according to the rotation direction of the two twist angles. We show that, once the middle FLG of DTFLG is not thinner than trilayer, both kinds of DTFLG can remarkably host two pairs of degenerate moiré flat bands (MFBs) at $E_f$, twice that of the magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). The doubled MFBs of DTFLG lead to doubled DOS at $E_f$, which implies much stronger correlation effects than the TBG. The degeneracy of MFBs can be lifted by a perpendicular electric field, and the isolated MFBs have nonzero valley Chern number. We also reveal the peculiar wave function patterns of the MFBs in the DTFLG. Our results establish a new family of moiré systems that have the much larger DOS at $E_f$, and thus possible much stronger correlation effects.

Realization of quasicrystalline quadrupole topological insulators in electrical circuits

Quadrupole topological insulators are a new class of topological insulators with quantized quadrupole moments, which support protected gapless corner states. The experimental demonstrations of quadrupole-topological insulators were reported in a series of artificial materials, such as photonic crystals, acoustic crystals, and electrical circuits. In all these cases, the underlying structures have discrete translational symmetry and thus are periodic. Here we experimentally realize two-dimensional aperiodic-quasicrystalline quadrupole-topological insulators by constructing them in electrical circuits, and observe the spectrally and spatially localized corner modes. In measurement, the modes appear as topological boundary resonances in the corner impedance spectra. Additionally, we demonstrate the robustness of corner modes on the circuit. Our circuit design may be extended to study topological phases in higher-dimensional aperiodic structures.

Topological Anderson insulators in an Ammann-Beenker quasicrystal and a snub-square crystal

The quest for the topological phases of matter in an aperiodic system has been greatly developed recently. Here we investigate the effects of disorder on topological phases of a two-dimensional Ammann-Beenker tiling quasicrystalline lattice. For comparison purposes, we also consider the case of a periodic snub-square crystalline lattice, which has the same primitive tiles as the Ammann-Beenker tiling quasicrystalline lattice. By calculating the spin Bott index and the two-terminal conductance, we confirm that the topological phases with disorder share the similar properties in the two systems which possess different symmetry and periodicity. It is shown that the quantum spin Hall states are robust against weak disorder in both the quasicrystalline lattice and the crystalline lattice. More interesting is that topological Anderson insulator phases induced by disorder appear in the two systems. Furthermore, the quantized conductance plateau contributed by the topological Anderson insulator phase is verified by the distribution of local currents.

Higher-Order topological insulator in a dodecagonal quasicrystal

Higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) are a newly discovered class of topological insulators which exhibit unconventional bulk-boundary correspondence. Very recently, the concept of HOTIs has been extended to aperiodic quasicrystalline systems, where the topological band theory fails to describe topological phases. More importantly, a novel HOTI phase protected by an eightfold rotational symmetry, not found in crystalline materials, was identified in the Ammann-Beenker tiling quasicrystals. Here we report the discovery of a quasicrystalline HOTI in a dodecagonal quasicrystal. The quasicrystalline HOTI supports twelve in-gap zero-energy modes symmetrically distributed at the corners of the quasicrystal dodecagon. These zero-energy corner modes are protected by a combination of a twelvefold rotational symmetry and mirror symmetry, as well as particle-hole symmetry, which has no crystalline counterpart.

Emergent $Z_2$ Topological Invariant and Robust Helical Edge States in Two-Dimensional Topological Metals

In this work, we study the disorder effect on topological metals that support a pair of helical edge modes deeply embedded inside the gapless bulk states. Strikingly, we predict that a quantum spin Hall (QSH) phase can be obtained from such topological metals without opening a global band gap. To be specific, disorder can lead to a pair of robust helical edge states which is protected by an emergent $Z_2$ topological invariant, giving rise to a quantized conductance plateau in transport measurements. These results are instructive for solving puzzles in {various transport experiments on QSH materials} that are intrinsically metallic. This work also will inspire experimental realization of the QSH effect in disordered topological metals.

Higher-Order Topological Insulators in Quasicrystals

Current understanding of higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) is based primarily on crystalline materials. Here, we propose that HOTIs can be realized in quasicrystals. Specifically, we show that two distinct types of second-order topological insulators (SOTIs) can be constructed on the quasicrystalline lattices (QLs) with different tiling patterns. One is derived by using a Wilson mass term to gap out the edge states of the quantum spin Hall insulator on QLs. The other is the quasicrystalline quadrupole insulator (QI) with a quantized quadrupole moment. We reveal some unusual features of the corner states (CSs) in the quasicrystalline SOTIs. We also show that the quasicrystalline QI can be simulated by a designed electrical circuit, where the CSs can be identified by measuring the impedance resonance peak. Our findings not only extend the concept of HOTIs into quasicrystals but also provide a feasible way to detect the topological property of quasicrystals in experiments.

Hinged Quantum Spin-Hall Effect in Antiferromagnetic Topological Insulators

In this work, we predict a hinged quantum spin-Hall (HQSH) effect featured by a pair of helical hinge modes in antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator (TI) multilayers. This pair of helical hinge modes are localized on the hinges of the top and bottom surfaces of the AFM TI multilayers. Unlike the conventional QSH effect, the HQSH effect survives the breaking of time-reversal symmetry (TRS) and thus represents a different kind of topological phenomenon. The helical hinge modes are sustainable to inelastic scattering and TRS-breaking disorder, which can be observed in macroscopic samples. We show that this HQSH effect can be understood as a three-dimensional generalization of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and its topology is characterized by the spin Chern number. At last, we propose that the HQSH effect can be realized in newly found intrinsic AFM TI materials (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)$_m$(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ or magnetic-doped TI multilayers by current experimental setups.

Disorder-induced Majorana zero modes in a dimerized Kitaev superconductor chain

Motivated by the recent experimental observation of the topological Anderson insulator in disordered atomic wires based on the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, we study disorder effects on a dimerized Kitaev superconductor chain which is regarded as the superconductor version of the SSH model. By computing the real-space winding number and the zero-bias differential conductance, we analyze the topological phase transitions occurring in a dimerized Kitaev superconductor chain with disorder. It is found that disorder can induce a topologically nontrivial superconductor phase hosting Majorana zero modes (MZMs). We can regulate the appearance of disorder-induced MZMs by adjusting the dimerization parameter. Finally, we use the self-consistent Born approximation method to verify the numerical results.

Topological Anderson insulator phase in a quasicrystal lattice

Motivated by the recent experimental realization of the topological Anderson insulator and research interest on the topological quasicrystal lattices, we investigate the effects of disorder on topological properties of a two-dimensional Penrose-type quasicrystal lattice that supports the quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) and normal insulator (NI) phases in the clean limit. It is shown that the helical edge state of the QSHI phase is robust against weak disorder. Most saliently, it is found that disorder can induce a phase transition from NI to QSHI phase in the quasicrystal system. The numerical results based on a two-terminal device show that a quantized conductance plateau can arise inside the energy gap of NI phase for moderate Anderson disorder strength. Further, it is confirmed that the local current distributions of the disorder-induced quantized conductance plateau are located on the two edges of sample. Finally, we identify this disorder-induced phase as topological Anderson insulator phase by computing the disorder-averaged spin Bott index.

Floquet Weyl semimetals in light-irradiated type-II and hybrid line-node semimetals

Type-II Weyl semimetals have recently attracted intensive research interest because they host Lorentz-violating massless fermions as quasiparticles. The discovery of type-II Weyl semimetals evokes the study of type-II line-node semimetals (LNSMs) whose linear dispersion is strongly tilted near the nodal ring. We present here a study on the circularly polarized light-induced Floquet states in type-II LNSMs, as well as those in hybrid LNSMs that have a partially over-tilted linear dispersion in the vicinity of the nodal ring. We illustrate that two distinct types of Floquet Weyl semimetal (WSM) states can be induced in periodically driven type-II and hybrid LNSMs, and the type of Floquet WSMs can be tuned by the direction and intensity of the incident light. We construct phase diagrams of light irradiated type-II and hybrid LNSMs which are quite distinct from those of light-irradiated type-I LNSMs. Moreover, we show that the photoinduced Floquet type-I and type-II WSMs can be characterized by the emergence of different anomalous Hall conductivities.

Exact Solution to Haldane-BCS-Hubbard Model Along the Symmetric Lines: Interaction Induced Topological Phase Transition

We propose a Haldane-BCS-Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, which is composed of two copies of the Haldane model of the quantum anomalous Hall effect, an equal-spin pairing term and an onsite Hubbard interaction term. For any interaction strength, this model is exactly solvable along the symmetric line where the hopping and pairing amplitudes are equal to each other. The ground state of the Haldane-BCS-Hubbard model is a topological superconducting state at weak interaction with two chiral Majorana edge states. A strong interaction drives the system across a topological quantum phase transition to a topologically trivial superconductor. A $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ symmetry of the Hamiltonian, which is a composition of the bond-centered inversion and a gauge transformation, is spontaneously broken by the interaction, resulting a finite antiferromagnetic order in the $y$-direction.

Topological Superconductivity Intertwined with Broken Symmetries

Recently the superconductor and topological semimetal PbTaSe$_2$ was experimentally found to exhibit surface-only lattice rotational symmetry breaking below $T_c$. We exploit the Ginzburg-Landau free energy and propose a microscopic two-channel model to study possible superconducting states on the surface of PbTaSe$_2$. We identify two types of topological superconducting states. One is time-reversal invariant and preserves the lattice hexagonal symmetry while the other breaks both symmetries. We find that such time-reversal symmetry breaking is unavoidable for a superconducting state in a two dimensional irreducible representation of crystal point group in a system where the spatial inversion symmetry is broken and the strong spin-orbit coupling is present. Our findings will guide the search for topological chiral superconductors.

Finite-size effects in non-Hermitian topological systems

We systematically investigate the finite-size effects in non-Hermitian one-dimensional (1D) Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) and two-dimensional (2D) Chern insulator models. Using a combination of analytical and numerical calculations, we show that the non-Hermitian intra-cell hoppings in the SSH model can modify the localization lengths of bulk and end states, giving rise to a complex finite-size energy gap that exhibits an oscillating exponential decay as the chain length grows. However, the imaginary staggered on-site potentials in the SSH model only change the end-state energy, leaving the localization lengths of the system unchanged. In this case, the finite-size energy gap can undergo a transition from real values to imaginary values. We observed similar phenomena for the finite-size effect in 2D Chern insulator systems.

Spatial anisotropy of Kondo screening cloud in a type-II Weyl semimetal

We theoretically study the Kondo screening of a spin-1/2 magnetic impurity in the bulk of a type-II Weyl semimetal (WSM) by use of the variational wave function method. We consider a type-II WSM model with two Weyl nodes located on the $k_z$-axis, and the tilting of the Weyl cones are along the $k_x$ direction. Due to co-existing electron and hole pockets, the density of states at the Fermi energy becomes finite, leading to a significant enhancement of Kondo effect. Consequently, the magnetic impurity and the conduction electrons always form a bound state, this behavior is distinct from that in the type-I WSMs, where the bound state is only formed when the hybridization exceeds a critical value. Meanwhile, the spin-orbit coupling and unique geometry of the Fermi surface lead to strongly anisotropic Kondo screening cloud in coordinate space. The tilting terms break the rotational symmetry of the type-II WSM about the $k_z$-axis, but the system remains invariant under a combined transformation $\mathcal{T}R^{y}(π)$, where $\mathcal{T}$ is the time-reversal operation and $R^{y}(π)$ is the rotation about the $y$-axis by $π$. Largely modified diagonal and off-diagonal components of the spin-spin correlation function on three principal planes reflect this change in band symmetry. Most saliently, the tilting terms trigger the emergence of non-zero off-diagonal components of spin-spin correlation function on the $x$-$z$ principal plane.

Floquet topological insulator phase in a Weyl semimetal thin film with disorder

We investigate the effects of periodic fields and disorder on topological properties of a Weyl-semimetal thin film. The two periodic fields, i.e., a periodic magnetic field and elliptically polarized light, are discussed respectively. By use of the Floquet theory, we find that both the two periodic drives can resonantly induce the topological transitions from normal insulator (NI) phases to Floquet topological insulator (FTI) phases. The Floquet topological transitions are characterized by variation of Chern number. Moreover, we show that the Floquet topological transitions can be explained by a combination of the quantum well approximation and the rotating wave approximation. In the disordered Weyl-semimetal thin film model under periodic fields, we calculate the Bott index to characterize topological phase. It is found that the FTI phase is robust against weak disorder, and collapses for strong disorder strength. Interestingly, we find that disorder can also induce a topological transition from a topological trivial phase to an FTI phase, establishing the Floquet topological Anderson insulator (FTAI) phase. Finally, an effective-medium theory based on the Born approximation further confirms the numerical conclusions.

Emergent Josephson current of $N=1$ chiral topological superconductor in quantum anomalous Hall insulator/superconductor heterostructures

Recently, a quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI)/superconductor heterostructure has been realized and shows half-quantized conductance plateaus in two-terminal conductance measurements [Q. L. He \textit{et al.}, Science {\bf357}, 294 (2017)]. The half-quantized conductance plateaus are considered as a solid evidence of chiral Majorana edge modes. However, there is a strong debate over the origin of the half-quantized conductance plateaus. In this work, we propose a Josephson junction based on the QAHI/superconductor heterostructure to identify the existence of chiral Majorana edge modes. We find that the critical Josephson current dramatically increases to a peak value when a half-quantized conductance plateau $σ_{12}=e^2/2h$ is showing up for the $N=1$ chiral topological superconductor phase with a single chiral Majorana mode. Furthermore, we show that the critical Josephson current of the $N=1$ chiral topological superconductor exhibits an $h/e$-period oscillation and is robust to disorder, in contrast to the behaviors of conventional two-dimensional electron gas systems. We also estimate experimentally relevant parameters and believe that the supercurrent can be observed in experiments.
