Compositional differences between the component stars of eclipsing close binary systems showing chemical peculiarities

A spectroscopic study was carried out on the surface chemical abundances of CNO and several heavier elements in the primary and secondary components of 5 eclipsing close binaries around A-type (AR Aur, beta Aur, YZ Cas, WW Aur, and RR Lyn), in order to investigate the nature of chemical differences between both components (being comparatively slow rotators alike due to tidal synchronization). Regarding the systems comprising similar components, beta Aur and WW Aur were confirmed to exhibit no compositional difference between the primary and secondary both showing almost the same Am anomaly, though the chemical peculiarities seen in the component stars of AR Aur show distinct differences (HgMn star and Am star). In contrast, as to the systems (YZ Cas and RR Lyn) consisting of considerably different (A and early-F) components, the surface abundances are markedly different between the primary (Am) and secondary (normal). These observational results may indicate Teff-dependent characteristics regarding the chemical anomalies of non-magnetic stars on the upper main sequence: (1) In the effective temperature range of 10000K > Teff > 7000K, rotational velocity is the most important factor for determining the extent of Am peculiarity. (2) However, the emergence of Am phenomenon seems to have a lower Teff limit at ~7000K, below which no abundance anomaly is observed regardless of stellar rotation. (3) The transition from Am anomaly (mild deficiency in CNO) to HgMn anomaly (unusually large N depletion) is likely to take place as Teff increases from ~10000K to ~11000K.

Photospheric carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen abundances of A-type main-sequence stars

Based on the spectrum fitting method applied to CI 5380, NI 7486, and OI 6156-8 lines, we determined the abundances of C, N, and O for 100 mostly A-type main-sequence stars (late B through early F at 11000K>Teff>7000K) comprising normal stars as well as non-magnetic chemically peculiar (CP) stars in the projected rotational velocity range of 0km/s N>O. Regarding the considerable star-to-star dispersion observed at any Teff, the most important cause is presumably the difference in rotational velocity. These observational facts appear to be more or less favorably compared with the recent theoretical calculations based on the model of atomic diffusion and envelope mixing.

Magnetic field and radial velocities of the star Chi Draconis A

We present high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of the spectroscopic binary Chi Dra. Spectral lines in the spectrum of the main component Chi Dra A show variable Zeeman displacement, which confrms earlier suggestions about the presence of a weak magnetic field on the surface of this star. Within about 2 years of time base of our observations, the longitudinal component BL of the magnetic field exhibits variation from -11.5 +/- 2.5 G to +11.1 +/- 2.1 G with a period of about 23 days. Considering the rotational velocity of Chi DraA in the literature and that newly measured in this work, this variability may be explained by the stellar rotation under the assumption that the magnetic field is globally stable. Our new measurements of the radial velocities (RV) in high-resolution I-spectra of Chi Dra A refined the orbital parameters and reveal persistent deviations of RVs from the orbital curve. We suspect that these deviations may be due to the in uence of local magnetically generated spots, pulsations, or a Jupiter-size planet orbiting the system.

Lithium, Sodium, and Potassium Abundances in Sharp-Lined A-Type Stars

The abundances of alkali elements (Li, Na, and K) were determined from the Li I 6708, Na I 5682/5688, and K I 7699 lines by taking into account the non-LTE effect for 24 sharp-lined A-type stars v sin i < 50 km/s, 7000 K < Teff <10000 K, many showing Am peculiarities to different degrees), based on high-dispersion and high-S/N spectral data secured at BOAO (Korea) and OAO (Japan). We found a significant trend that A(Na) tightly scales with A(Fe) irrespective of Teff, which means that Na becomes enriched similarly to Fe in accordance with the degree of Am peculiarity. Regarding lithium, A(Li) mostly ranges between ~3 and ~3.5 (i.e., almost the same as or slightly less than the solar system abundance of 3.3) with a weak decreasing tendency with a lowering of Teff at Teff < 8000 K, though several stars exceptionally show distinctly larger depletion. The abundances of potassium also revealed an apparent Teff-dependence in the sense that A(K) in late-A stars tends to be mildly subsolar (possibly with a weak anti-correlation with A(Fe)) systematically decreasing from ~5.0 (Teff ~ 8500 K) to ~4.6 (Teff ~ 7500 K), while those for early-A stars remain near-solar around ~5.0-5.2. These observational facts may serve as important constraints for any theory aiming to explain chemical anomalies of A-type stars.

Can Sodium Abundances of A-Type Stars Be Reliably Determined from Na I 5890/5896 Lines?

An extensive non-LTE abundance analysis based on Na I 5890/5896 doublet lines was carried out for a large unbiased sample of ~120 A-type main-sequence stars (including 23 Hyades stars) covering a wide v_e sin i range of ~10--300 km/s, with an aim to examine whether the Na abundances in such A dwarfs can be reliably established from these strong Na I D lines. The resulting abundances ([Na/H]_{58}), which were obtained by applying the T_eff-dependent microturbulent velocities of ξ~2--4 km/s with a peak at T_eff ~ 8000 K (typical for A stars), turned out generally negative with a large diversity (from ~-1 to ~0), while showing a sign of v_e sin i-dependence (decreasing toward higher rotation). However, the reality of this apparently subsolar trend is very questionable, since these [Na/H]_{58} are systematically lower by ~0.3--0.6 dex than more reliable [Na/H]_{61} (derived from weak Na I 6154/6161 lines for sharp-line stars). Considering the large ξ-sensitivity of the abundances derived from these saturated Na I D lines, we regard that [Na/H]_{58} must have been erroneously underestimated, suspecting that the conventional ξvalues are improperly too large at least for such strong high-forming Na I 5890/5896 lines, presumably due to the depth-dependence of ξdecreasing with height. The nature of atmospheric turbulent velocity field in mid-to-late A stars would have to be more investigated before we can determine reliable sodium abundances from these strong resonance D lines.

Rotation and surface abundance peculiarities in A-type stars

In an attempt of clarifying the connection between the photospheric abundance anomalies and the stellar rotation as well as of exploring the nature of "normal A" stars, the abundances of seven elements (C, O, Si, Ca, Ti, Fe, and Ba) and the projected rotational velocity for 46 A-type field stars were determined by applying the spectrum-fitting method to the high-dispersion spectral data obtained with BOES at BOAO. We found that the peculiarities (underabundances of C, O, and Ca; an overabundance of Ba) seen in slow rotators efficiently decrease with an increase of rotation, which almost disappear at v_e sin i > 100 km s^-1. This further suggests that stars with sufficiently large rotational velocity may retain the original composition at the surface without being altered. Considering the subsolar tendency (by several tenths dex below) exhibited by the elemental abundances of such rapidly-rotating (supposedly normal) A stars, we suspect that the gas metallicity may have decreased since our Sun was born, contrary to the common picture of galactic chemical evolution.

The BOES spectropolarimeter for Zeeman measurements of stellar magnetic fields

We introduce a new polarimeter installed on the high-resolution fiber-fed echelle spectrograph (called BOES) of the 1.8-m telescope at the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory, Korea. The instrument is intended to measure stellar magnetic fields with high-resolution (R $\sim$ 60000) spectropolarimetric observations of intrinsic polarization in spectral lines. In this paper we describe the spectropolarimeter and present test observations of the longitudinal magnetic fields in some well-studied F-B main sequence magnetic stars (m_v < 8.8^m). The results demonstrate that the instrument has a high precision ability of detecting the fields of these stars with typical accuracies ranged from about 2G to a few tens of gauss.
