A Vehicle-portable Ultra-stable Laser for Operating on Highways

Portable ultra-stable lasers are essential for high-precision measurements. This study presents a 1550 nm vehicle-portable ultra-stable laser designed for continuous real-time operation on highways. We implement several measures to mitigate environmental impacts, including active temperature control with a standard deviation of mK/day to reduce frequency drift of the optical reference cavity, all-polarization-maintaining fiber devices to enhance the robustness of the optical path, and highly integrated electronic units to diminish thermal effects. The performance of the ultra-stable laser is evaluated through real-time beat frequency measurements with another similar ultra-stable laser over a transport distance of approximately 100 km, encompassing rural roads, national roads, urban roads, and expressways. The results indicate frequency stability of approximately 10-12/(0.01s-100 s) during transport, about 5E-14/s while the vehicle is stationary with the engine running, and around 3E-15/s with the engine off, all without active vibration isolation. This work marks the first recorded instance of a portable ultra-stable laser achieving continuous real-time operation on highways and lays a crucial foundation for non-laboratory applications, such as mobile laser communication and dynamic free-space time-frequency comparison.

Ultra-narrow linewidth light generation based on an optoelectronic oscillator

Narrow-linewidth light sources are essential for both fundamental research and various technological applications, yet they are challenging to generate directly due to instabilities in active laser cavities and the misalignment between closely spaced resonator modes and broad gain bandwidth. In this study, we demonstrate the direct generation of low-noise light from an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO). By minimizing the delay in the optoelectronic link and employing a high-quality optical resonator, an OEO can simultaneously generate both a low-phase-noise optical oscillation that is resilient to phase fluctuations of its pump laser, and a radio frequency (RF) oscillation that captures these fluctuations. We leverage these RF-domain fluctuations to implement a high-performance feedback loop, which stabilizes the pump laser and significantly enhances the performance of optical oscillation. This approach achieves an outstanding phase noise level of -100 dBc/Hz at a 1 kHz offset and an integrated linewidth as narrow as 0.23 Hz. The integration of optoelectronic oscillation and feedback loop provides significant broadband noise suppression compared to conventional schemes for generating narrow-linewidth light, paving the way for developments in fields such as coherent optical communications, atomic spectroscopy, metrology, and quantum optics.

A portable sub Hertz ultra-stable laser over 1700km highway transportation

We present a subHz linewidth portable ultrastable laser with the mass and volume of are 40kg and 400mm*280mm*450mm, respectively, that meets the requirements of automatic frequency locking and road transportation. A dynamic analytical model of the physical parts of ultrastable laser is established, and the first order resonance frequency is determined by FEA and well agrees with the experimentally measured result. To verify the transport performance of the portable ultrastable laser, it is tested for 100 km actual road transportation and 60 min continuous vibration, corresponding to 1700 km road transportation. The success of the test demonstrated that the portable ultrastable laser was very robust. Meanwhile, the portable ultrastable lasers shows that the median of the linewidth distribution is approximately 0.78 Hz, and the fractional frequency instability is less than 3E-15 at 1 to 10 s averaging time. This value approaches the total noise of 2.0E-15 including thermal noise and residual amplitude modulation. The robust suggested that the portable ultrastable laser might be a good candidate such as optical frequency transfer and metrological systems.
