Multimodal UNcommonsense: From Odd to Ordinary and Ordinary to Odd

Commonsense reasoning in multimodal contexts remains a foundational challenge in artificial intelligence. We introduce Multimodal UNcommonsense(MUN), a benchmark designed to evaluate models' ability to handle scenarios that deviate from typical visual or contextual expectations. MUN pairs visual scenes with surprising or unlikely outcomes described in natural language, prompting models to either rationalize seemingly odd images using everyday logic or uncover unexpected interpretations in ordinary scenes. To support this task, we propose a retrieval-based in-context learning (R-ICL) framework that transfers reasoning capabilities from larger models to smaller ones without additional training. Leveraging a novel Multimodal Ensemble Retriever (MER), our method identifies semantically relevant exemplars even when image and text pairs are deliberately discordant. Experiments show an average improvement of 8.3% over baseline ICL methods, highlighting the effectiveness of R-ICL in low-frequency, atypical settings. MUN opens new directions for evaluating and improving visual-language models' robustness and adaptability in real-world, culturally diverse, and non-prototypical scenarios.

Persona Dynamics: Unveiling the Impact of Personality Traits on Agents in Text-Based Games

Artificial agents are increasingly central to complex interactions and decision-making tasks, yet aligning their behaviors with desired human values remains an open challenge. In this work, we investigate how human-like personality traits influence agent behavior and performance within text-based interactive environments. We introduce PANDA: Personality Adapted Neural Decision Agents, a novel method for projecting human personality traits onto agents to guide their behavior. To induce personality in a text-based game agent, (i) we train a personality classifier to identify what personality type the agent's actions exhibit, and (ii) we integrate the personality profiles directly into the agent's policy-learning pipeline. By deploying agents embodying 16 distinct personality types across 25 text-based games and analyzing their trajectories, we demonstrate that an agent's action decisions can be guided toward specific personality profiles. Moreover, certain personality types, such as those characterized by higher levels of Openness, display marked advantages in performance. These findings underscore the promise of personality-adapted agents for fostering more aligned, effective, and human-centric decision-making in interactive environments.

Teaching Metric Distance to Discrete Autoregressive Language Models

Large language models (LLMs) operate as autoregressive predictors over discrete token vocabularies, a formulation that has enabled their adaptation far beyond natural language to vision, robotics, and multimodal reasoning. However, training against one-hot targets disregards metric relationships between tokens and limits effectiveness on tasks where distance is meaningful, such as numerical values, spatial coordinates, or quantized embeddings. We introduce DIST2Loss, a distance-aware objective for discrete autoregressive models that replaces one-hot targets with reward-weighted distributions derived from predefined token distances. DIST2Loss can be interpreted as the closed-form solution to entropy-regularized policy optimization with known per-token rewards, retaining the core mechanism of reinforcement learning while avoiding sampling, rollouts, and instability. Our experiments show that DIST2Loss improves data efficiency and downstream performance across diverse domains. It yields tighter bounding boxes in visual grounding, accelerates robotic manipulation by improving action learning, enhances reward modeling for LLM alignment, and strengthens vector-quantized image generation. These results demonstrate that distance-aware supervision offers a simple and general alternative to one-hot supervision for discrete autoregressive models.
