Photonic real-time signal processing

The simultaneous progress of integrated optical frequency comb (OFC) and radio frequency (RF) photonic signal processing technique have promoted the rapid development of real-time signal processing. Integrated optical frequency comb offer multiple wavelengths as a powerful source for RF photonic signal transversal filter. Here, we review development of real-time signal processing system consisting of integrated OFC and RF photonic signal transversal filter in chronological order, and focus on the applications of this system such as differentiator, integrator, Hilbert transformer, and image processor. We also discuss and present our outlook on more parallel functions and further integration of real-time signal processing system.

Turnkey deterministic soliton crystal generation

The deterministic generation of robust soliton comb has significant meaning for the optical frequency combs to be widely used in various applications. As a novel form of microcomb, Soliton crystal holds the advantages of easy generation, high conversion efficiency, and excellent thermal robustness. Here, we report the turnkey deterministic generation of "Palm-like" soliton crystal with a free-running scheme. The robustness of the turnkey soliton crystal generation is also investigated in multiple aspects, including the success rate, the thermal robustness, and the long-term stability. The experiment results reveal our turnkey soliton crystal can achieve nearly a 100% success rate with a power variation less than 1.5 dB over one hundred trials of two samples, is insensitive to thermal effect, and is robust to the environment during four-hour laboratory time.

A Surface Integral Formulation for Scattering Modeling by 2D Penetrable Objects

In this paper, we proposed a single-source surface integral formulation to accurately solve the scattering problems by 2D penetrable objects. In this method, the objects are replaced by their surrounding medium through enforcing a surface equivalent electric current to ensure fields exactly the same as those in the original scattering problem. The equivalent electric current is obtained through emitting the equivalent magnetic current by enforcing that the electric fields in the original and equivalent problems equal to each other. Through solving the Helmholtz equation inside objects by the scalar second Green theorem, we could accurately model arbitrarily shaped objects. Then, we solve the exterior scattering problems through the combined integral equation (CFIE) with the equivalent electric current. The proposed formulation only requires a single electric current source to model penetrable objects. At last, two numerical experiments are carried out to validate its accuracy, stability and capability of handling non-smoothing objects.

Fast Green Function Evaluation for Method of Moment

In this letter, an approach to accelerate the matrix filling in method of moment (MOM) is presented. Based on the fact that the Green function is dependent on the Euclidean distance between the source and the observation points, we constructed an efficient adaptive one-dimensional interpolation approach to fast calculate the $Exp$ type function values. In the proposed method, several adaptive interpolation tables are constructed based on the maximum and minimum distance between any two integration points with local refinement near zero function values to minimize the relative error. An efficient approach to obtain the sampling points used in the interpolation phase is carefully designed. Then, any function values can be efficiently calculated through a linear interpolation method for Exp and a Lagrange polynomial interpolation method for the Green function. In addition, the error bound of the proposed method is rigorously investigated. The proposed method can be quite easily integrated into the available MOM codes for different integration equation (IE) formulations with few efforts. Comprehensive numerical experiments validate its accuracy and efficiency through several IE formulations. Results show that over 20% efficiency improvement can be achieved without sacrificing the accuracy.
