Can non-orthogonal bases form stable skyrmionic beams?

Skyrmions, topologically stable spin textures, have recently garnered significant attention in optics promising robust high-density information transition and nontrivial light-matter interaction. It was believed that the optical skyrmionic beams should be constructed by superposition of two orthogonal spatial modes with orthogonal polarizations to obtain topologically stable propagation. Here, we surprisingly find that propagation-stable skyrmionic beams can still be formed by superpositions of neither orthogonal spatial modes nor orthogonal polarizations. We theoretically present the mechanism to control the stable skyrmionics beams through the hybrid superposition of modes from the Hermite-Gaussian and Laguerre-Gaussian families and experimentally control the longitudinal on-demand dynamics of the skyrmions. This work redefines the topological stability of optical skyrmions, breaks limits and reduces the requirement for manipulating topologically structured light for practical multidimensional implementation of topologically robust information technologies.

Tunable beam splitting via photorefractive nonlinearity and its applications in chiral waveguide induction and vortex generation

We report experimental observation and theoretical explanation of novel propagation regimes for optical beams in an artificial nonlinear material with outstanding photorefractive properties. Nondiffractive beams, which keep their shapes invariant in the free space, feature self-splitting from the middle in two separating secondary beams, due to the light-matter interaction. The splitting degree is controlled by means of a phase-pre-modulation method. We propose applications of the self-splitting to the creation of an effectively chiral waveguide and the generation of even-order vortices.

Autofocusing Self-Imaging: The Symmetric Pearcey Talbot-like Effect

The Talbot like effect of symmetric Pearcey beams (SPBs) is presented numerically and experimentally in the free space. Owing to the Talbot like effect, the SPBs have the property of periodic and multiple autofocusing. Meanwhile, the focal positions and focal times of SPBs are controlled by the beam shift factor and the distribution factors. What is more, the beam shift factor can also affect the Talbot-like effect and the Talbot period. Therefore, several tiny optical bottles can be generated under the appropriate parameter setting. It is believed that the results can diversify the application of the Talbot effect.

Airy-Gaussian vortex beams in the fractional nonlinear-Schrödinger medium

We address the propagation of vortex beams with the circular Airy-Gaussian shape in a (2+1)-dimensional optical waveguide modeled by the fractional nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Systematic analysis of autofocusing of the beams reveals a strongly non-monotonous dependence of the peak intensity in the focal plane on the corresponding Levy index, with a strong maximum at alpha =1.4. Effects of the nonlinearity strength, the ratio of widths of the Airy and Gaussian factors in the input, as well as the beam vorticity, on the autofocusing dynamics are explored. In particular, multiple autofocusing events occur if the nonlinearity is strong enough. Under the action of the azimuthal modulational instability, an axisymmetric beam may split into a set of separating bright spots. In the case of strong fractality (for alpha close to 1), the nonlinear beam self-traps, after the first instance of autofocusing, into a breathing vortical quasi-soliton. Radiation forces induced by the beam field are considered too, and a capture position for a probe nanoparticle is thus identified.

Propagation dynamics of radially polarized symmetric Airy beams in the fractional Schrödinger equation

We analyze the propagation dynamics of radially polarized symmetric Airy beams (R-SABs) in a (2+1)-dimensional optical system with fractional diffraction, modeled by the fractional Schrödinger equation (FSE) characterized by the Lévy index. The autofocusing effect featured by such beams becomes stronger, while the focal length becomes shorter, with the increase of . The effect of the intrinsic vorticity on the autofocusing dynamics of the beams is considered too. Then, the ability of R-SABs to capture nano-particles by means of radiation forces is explored, and multiple capture positions emerging in the course of the propagation are identified. Finally, we find that the propagation of the vortical R-SABs with an off-axis shift leads to rupture of the ring-shaped pattern of the power-density distribution.

Propagation dynamics of abruptly autofocusing circular Airy-Gaussian vortex beams in the fractional Schrödinger equation

We introduce axisymmetric Airy-Gaussian vortex beams in a model of an optical system based on the (2+1)-dimensional fractional Schrödinger equation, characterized by its Lévy index (LI). By means of numerical methods, we explore propagation dynamics of the beams with vorticities from 0 to 4. The propagation leads to abrupt autofocusing, followed by its reversal (rebound from the center). It is shown that LI, the relative width of the Airy and Gaussian factors, and the vorticity determine properties of the autofocusing dynamics, including the focusing distance, radius of the focal light spot, and peak intensity at the focus. A maximum of the peak intensity is attained at intermediate values of LI, close to LI=1.4 . Dynamics of the abrupt autofocusing of Airy-Gaussian beams carrying vortex pairs (split double vortices) is considered too.

Propagation dynamics of the circular Airy Gaussian vortex beams in the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We have investigated the propagation dynamics of the circular Airy Gaussian vortex beams (CAGVBs) in a (2+1)-dimesional optical system discribed by fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation (FNSE). By combining fractional diffraction with nonlinear effects, the abruptly autofocusing effect becomes weaker, the radius of the focusing beams becomes bigger and the autofocusing length will be shorter with increase of fractional diffraction Lévy index. It has been found that the abruptly autofocusing effect becomes weaker and the abruptly autofocusing length becomes longer if distribution factor of CAGVBs increases for fixing the Lévy index. The roles of the input power and the topological charge in determining the autofocusing properties are also discussed. Then, we have found the CAGVBs with outward acceleration and shown the autodefocusing properties. Finally, the off-axis CAGVBs with positive vortex pairs in the FNSE optical system have shown interesting features during propagation.
