Non-GRS type Euclidean and Hermitian LCD codes and Their Applications for EAQECCs

In recent years, the construction of non-GRS type linear codes has attracted considerable attention due to that they can effectively resist both the Sidelnikov-Shestakov attack and the Wieschebrink attack. Constructing linear complementary dual (LCD) codes and determining the hull of linear codes have long been important topics in coding theory, as they play the crucial role in constructing entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes (EAQECCs), certain communication systems and cryptography. In this paper, by utilizing a class of non-GRS type linear codes, namely, generalized Roth-Lempel (in short, GRL) codes, we firstly construct several classes of Euclidean LCD codes, Hermitian LCD codes, and linear codes with small-dimensional hulls, generalized the main results given by Wu et al. in 2021. We also present an upper bound for the number of a class of Euclidean GRL codes with 1-dimensional hull, and then for several classes of Hermitian GRL codes, we firstly derive an upper bound for the dimension of the hull, and prove that the bound is attainable. Secondly, as an application, we obtain several families of EAQECCs. Thirdly, we prove that the GRL code is non-GRS for $k >\ell$. Finally, some corresponding examples for LCD MDS codes and LCD NMDS codes are presented.

Multi-Twisted Generalized Reed-Solomon Codes: Structure, Properties, and Constructions

Maximum distance separable (in short, MDS), near MDS (in short, NMDS), and self-orthogonal codes play a pivotal role in algebraic coding theory, particularly in applications such as quantum communications and secret sharing scheme. Recently, the construction of non-generalized Reed-Solomon (in short, non-GRS) codes has emerged as a significant research frontier. This paper presents a systematic investigation into a generalized class of $(\mathcal{L}, \mathcal{P})$-twisted generalized Reed-Solomon (TGRS) codes characterized by $\ell$ twists, extending the structures previously introduced by Beelen et al. and Hu et al.. We first derive the explicit parity-check matrices for these codes by analyzing the properties of symmetric polynomials. Based on this algebraic framework, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the self-orthogonality of the proposed codes, generalizing several recent results. Leveraging these self-orthogonal structures, we construct new families of LCD MDS codes that offer greater flexibility in code length compared to existing literature. Furthermore, we provide a characterization of the NMDS property for these codes, offering a partial solution to the open problem concerning general $(\mathcal{L}, \mathcal{P})$-TGRS codes posed by Hu et al. (2025). Finally, we rigorously prove that these codes are of non-GRS type when $2k > n$, providing an improvement over previous bounds. Theoretical constructions are validated through numerical examples.

On the Hamming Weight Functions of Linear Codes

Currently known secondary construction techniques for linear codes mainly include puncturing, shortening, and extending. In this paper, we propose a novel method for the secondary construction of linear codes based on their weight functions. Specifically, we develop a general framework that constructs new linear codes from the set of codewords in a given code having a fixed Hamming weight. We analyze the dimension, number of weights, and weight distribution of the constructed codes, and establish connections with the extendability of the original codes as well as the partial weight distribution of the derived codes. As a new tool, this framework enables us to establish an upper bound on the minimum weight of two-weight codes and to characterize all two-weight codes attaining this bound. Moreover, several divisibility properties concerning the parameters of two-weight codes are derived. The proposed method not only generates new families of linear codes but also provides a powerful approach for exploring the intrinsic combinatorial and geometric structures of existing codes.

Photonic logic tensor computing beyond TOPS per core

The soaring demand for computing resources has spurred great interest in photonic computing with higher speed and larger computing capacity. Photonic logic gates are of crucial importance due to the fundamental role of Boolean logic in modern digital computing systems. However, most photonic logic schemes struggle to exhibit the capability of massively parallel processing and flexible reconfiguration, owing to weak and fixed nonlinearity in optical elements. Here, we propose a photonic logic tensor computing architecture for the first time and fabricate the photonic universal logic tensor core (PULTC) with a parallel logic computing capacity beyond TOPS. Ten wavelength channels and four spatial channels are designed in PULTC, where the logic computing speed in each channel can reach 50 Gbit/s. After the nonlinear mapping of microring modulators, arbitrary logic operations can be achieved by configuring the Mach-Zehnder interferometer mesh. Our work offers an innovative route for photonic universal logic computing with high-parallel capability and propels the practical applications of photonic logic computing.

Eight-input optical programmable logic array enabled by parallel spectrum modulation

Despite over 40 years' development of optical logic computing, the studies have been still struggling to support more than four operands, since the high parallelism of light has not been fully leveraged blocked by the optical nonlinearity and redundant input modulation in existing methods. Here, we propose a scalable multi-input optical programmable logic array (PLA) with minimal logical input, enabled by parallel spectrum modulation. By making full use of the wavelength resource, an eight-input PLA is experimentally demonstrated, and there are 2^256 possible combinations of generated logic gates. Various complex logic fuctions, such as 8-256 decoder, 4-bit comparator, adder and multiplier are experimentally demonstrated via leveraging the PLA. The scale of PLA can be further extended by fully using the dimensions of wavelength and space. As an example, a nine-input PLA is implemented to realize the two-dimensional optical cellular automaton for the first time and perform Conway's Game of Life to simulate the evolutionary process of cells. Our work significantly alleviates the challenge of extensibility of optical logic devices, opening up new avenues for future large-scale, high-speed and energy-efficient optical digital computing.

Soliton frequency comb generation in a low Q microcavity coupled to a gain microcavity

Soliton frequency comb generation in coupled nonlinear microcavities is attractive because a coupled microcavity offers more flexibility and possibilities compared to a single nonlinear microcavity. In this paper, we investigate how an amplifying auxiliary cavity affects the bistability region of the main cavity and soliton frequency comb generation. When the auxiliary cavity has a small gain, it can partially compensate for the loss of the main cavity allowing the generation of soliton combs with a relatively low Q-factor in the main cavity. A low Q-factor microcavity would reduce the difficulty of fabrication and extend the microcavity platform to different types of materials. However, if the gain of the auxiliary cavity is too large, a frequency comb cannot be generated because the coupled nonlinear microcavity system is no longer dissipative. Our results provide a theoretical understanding and experimental guidance for the bistability region and soliton frequency comb generation in coupled nonlinear microcavities with an amplifying auxiliary cavity. The results will facilitate the development of chip-scale integrated optical frequency comb sources.

Chip-to-chip optical multimode communication with universal mode processors

The increasing amount of data exchange requires higher-capacity optical communication links. Mode division multiplexing (MDM) is considered as a promising technology to support the higher data throughput. In an MDM system, the mode generator and sorter are the backbone. However, most of the current schemes lack the programmability and universality, which makes the MDM link susceptible to the mode crosstalk and environmental disturbances. In this paper, we propose an intelligent multimode optical communication link using universal mode processing (generation and sorting) chips. The mode processor consists of a programmable 4*4 Mach Zehnder interferometer (MZI) network and can be intelligently configured to generate or sort both quasi linearly polarized (LP) modes and orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes in any desired routing state. We experimentally establish a chip-to-chip MDM communication system. The mode basis can be freely switched between four LP modes and four OAM modes. We also demonstrate the multimode optical communication capability at a data rate of 25 Gbit/s. The proposed scheme shows significant advantages in terms of universality, intelligence, programmability and resistance to mode crosstalk, environmental disturbances and fabrication errors, demonstrating that the MZI-based reconfigurable mode processor chip has great potential in long-distance chip-to-chip multimode optical communication systems.

Loss-induced high-density multi-mode integrated waveguides array

The integration density of photonic integrated circuits has been limited by light coupling between waveguides. Traditional approaches to layout the waveguide with high density are based on refractive index engineering to suppress the light coupling between waveguides. However, these methods mostly require sophisticated and sensitive structure design, thus lack universality. Herein, we propose high-density multi-mode-multi-core integrated photonic waveguides by inserting high-loss metal strips between waveguides. We have achieved a 10-spatial-channel multi-mode-multi-core waveguide with total occupying spacing of 6.6 um. The multi-mode waveguides have a close spacing of 400 nm. The proposed scheme has high fabrication tolerance, ultra-large bandwidth and good compatibility to the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology. It can be applied to any integration platform, any working waveband and any operating mode, providing a universal solution for high-density photonic circuits.

Fast-response silicon photonic microheater induced by parity-time symmetry breaking

Thermo-optic microheater is indispensable in silicon photonic devices for smart and reconfigurable photonic networks. Much efforts have been made to improve the metallic microheater performance in the past decades. However, because of the metallic nature of light absorption, placing the metallic microheater very close to the waveguide for fast response is impractical and has not been done experimentally. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a metallic microheater placed very close to the waveguide based on parity-time (PT) symmetry breaking. The intrinsic high loss of metallic heater ensures the system will operate in the PT-symmetry-broken region, which guarantee the low loss of light in the silicon waveguide. Moreover, heating at a close range significantly reduces the response time. A fast response time of ~1 us is achieved without introducing extra loss. The insertion loss is only 0.1 dB for the long heater. The modulation bandwidth is 280 kHz, which is an order of magnitude improvement when compared with that of the mainstream thermo-optic phase shifters. To verify the capability of large-scale integration, a 1*8 phased array for beam steering is also demonstrated experimentally with the PT-symmetry-broken metallic heaters. Our work provides a novel design concept for low-loss fast-response optical switches with dissipative materials and offers a new approach to enhance the performance of thermo-optic phase shifters.

Ultrahigh-speed optical coherence tomography based on a 100 MHz and 100 nm swept source

We demonstrate an ultrahigh-speed optical coherence tomography (OCT) based on a 100 MHz swept source (SS). An all polarization-maintaining figure-9 mode-locked fiber laser is used as the seed laser. After nonlinear spectral expansion in an Erbium-doped fiber amplifier, a flat top spectrum with respectively 1-dB and 10-dB bandwidths of 73.7 nm and 106 nm is obtained. The broadband femtosecond pulse is time stretched to a swept signal in a section of dispersion compensation fiber with a total dispersion of -84 ps/nm. With the swept source, the axial resolution of the SS-OCT is measured to be 21 um with a 6 dB sensitivity roll-off length of 3 mm. A tomographic image of an encoding disk and a hard disk jointly rotating at 17,000 rpm was acquired by using the SS-OCT with a high imaging quality.

Enhancement of Underwater Images with Statistical Model of Background Light and Optimization of Transmission Map

Underwater images often have severe quality degradation and distortion due to light absorption and scattering in the water medium. A hazed image formation model is widely used to restore the image quality. It depends on two optical parameters: the background light and the transmission map. Underwater images can also be enhanced by color and contrast correction from the perspective of image processing. In this paper, we propose an effective underwater image enhancement method for underwater images in composition of underwater image restoration and color correction. Firstly, a manually annotated background lights (MABLs) database is developed. With reference to the relationship between MABLs and the histogram distributions of various underwater images, robust statistical models of BLs estimation are provided. Next, the TM of R channel is roughly estimated based on the new underwater dark channel prior via the statistic of clear and high resolution underwater images, then a scene depth map based on the underwater light attenuation prior and an adjusted reversed saturation map are applied to compensate and modify the coarse TM of R channel. Next, TMs of G-B channels are estimated based on the difference of attenuation ratios between R channel and G-B channels. Finally, to improve the color and contrast of the restored image with a natural appearance, a variation of white balance is introduced as post-processing. In order to guide the priority of underwater image enhancement, sufficient evaluations are conducted to discuss the impacts of the key parameters including BL and TM, and the importance of the color correction. Comparisons with other state-of-the-art methods demonstrate that our proposed underwater image enhancement method can achieve higher accuracy of estimated BLs, less computation time, more superior performance, and more valuable information retention.
