SPARC-LDPC Coding for MIMO Massive Unsourced Random Access

A joint sparse-regression-code (SPARC) and low-density-parity-check (LDPC) coding scheme for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) massive unsourced random access (URA) is proposed in this paper. Different from the state-of-the-art covariance-based maximum likelihood (CB-ML) detection scheme, we first split users' messages into two parts. The former part is encoded by SPARCs and tasked to recover part of the messages, the corresponding channel coefficients as well as the interleaving patterns by compressed sensing. The latter part is coded by LDPC codes and then interleaved by the interleave-division multiple access (IDMA) scheme. The decoding of the latter part is based on belief propagation (BP) joint with successive interference cancellation (SIC). Numerical results show our scheme outperforms the CB-ML scheme when the number of antennas at the base station is smaller than that of active users. The complexity of our scheme is with the order $\mathcal{O}\left(2^{B_p}ML+\widehat{K}ML\right)$ and lower than the CB-ML scheme. Moreover, our scheme has higher spectral efficiency (nearly $15$ times larger) than CB-ML as we only split messages into two parts.

Spectral Efficiency Analysis of Cell-free Distributed Massive MIMO Systems with Imperfect Covariance Matrix

In this paper, the impacts of imperfect channel covariance matrix on the spectral efficiency (SE) of cell-free distributed massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are analyzed. We propose to estimate the channel covariance matrix by alternately using the assigned pilots and their phase-shifted pilots in different coherent blocks, which improves the accuracy of channel estimation with imperfect covariance matrix and reduces pilot overhead. Under this scheme, the closed-form expressions of SE with maximum ratio combination (MRC) and zero-forcing (ZF) receivers are derived, which enables us to select key parameters for better system performance. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed channel estimation method and the accuracy of the derived closed-form expressions. When more coherent blocks are used to estimate the covariance matrix, we can get better system performance. Moreover, some insightful conclusions are arrived at from the SE comparisons between different receiving schemes (ZF and MRC) and different pilot allocation schemes (orthogonal pilot and pilot reuse).

Terahertz Ultra-Massive MIMO-Based Aeronautical Communications in Space-Air-Ground Integrated Networks

The emerging space-air-ground integrated network has attracted intensive research and necessitates reliable and efficient aeronautical communications. This paper investigates terahertz Ultra-Massive (UM)-MIMO-based aeronautical communications and proposes an effective channel estimation and tracking scheme, which can solve the performance degradation problem caused by the unique {\emph{triple delay-beam-Doppler squint effects}} of aeronautical terahertz UM-MIMO channels. Specifically, based on the rough angle estimates acquired from navigation information, an initial aeronautical link is established, where the delay-beam squint at transceiver can be significantly mitigated by employing a Grouping True-Time Delay Unit (GTTDU) module (e.g., the designed {\emph{Rotman lens}}-based GTTDU module). According to the proposed prior-aided iterative angle estimation algorithm, azimuth/elevation angles can be estimated, and these angles are adopted to achieve precise beam-alignment and refine GTTDU module for further eliminating delay-beam squint. Doppler shifts can be subsequently estimated using the proposed prior-aided iterative Doppler shift estimation algorithm. On this basis, path delays and channel gains can be estimated accurately, where the Doppler squint can be effectively attenuated via compensation process. For data transmission, a data-aided decision-directed based channel tracking algorithm is developed to track the beam-aligned effective channels. When the data-aided channel tracking is invalid, angles will be re-estimated at the pilot-aided channel tracking stage with an equivalent sparse digital array, where angle ambiguity can be resolved based on the previously estimated angles. The simulation results and the derived Cramér-Rao lower bounds verify the effectiveness of our solution.

Channel Estimation and Hybrid Precoding for Distributed Phased Arrays Based MIMO Wireless Communications

Distributed phased arrays based multiple-input multiple-output (DPA-MIMO) is a newly introduced architecture that enables both spatial multiplexing and beamforming while facilitating highly reconfigurable hardware implementation in millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequency bands. With a DPA-MIMO system, we focus on channel state information (CSI) acquisition and hybrid precoding. As benefited from a coordinated and open-loop pilot beam pattern design, all the sub-arrays can perform channel sounding with less training overhead compared with the traditional orthogonal operation of each sub-array. Furthermore, two sparse channel recovery algorithms, known as joint orthogonal matching pursuit (JOMP) and joint sparse Bayesian learning with $\ell_2$ reweighting (JSBL-$\ell_2$), are proposed to exploit the hidden structured sparsity in the beam-domain channel vector. Finally, successive interference cancellation (SIC) based hybrid precoding through sub-array grouping is illustrated for the DPA-MIMO system, which decomposes the joint sub-array RF beamformer design into an interactive per-sub-array-group handle. Simulation results show that the proposed two channel estimators fully take advantage of the partial coupling characteristic of DPA-MIMO channels to perform channel recovery, and the proposed hybrid precoding algorithm is suitable for such array-of-sub-arrays architecture with satisfactory performance and low complexity.

Computing strong regular characteristic pairs with Groebner bases

The W-characteristic set of a polynomial ideal is the minimal triangular set contained in the reduced lexicographical Groebner basis of the ideal. A pair (G,C) of polynomial sets is a strong regular characteristic pair if G is a reduced lexicographical Groebner basis, C is the W-characteristic set of the ideal , the saturated ideal sat(C) of C is equal to , and C is regular. In this paper, we show that for any polynomial ideal I with given generators one can either detect that I is unit, or construct a strong regular characteristic pair (G,C) by computing Groebner bases such that I$\subseteq$sat(C)= and sat(C) divides I, so the ideal I can be split into the saturated ideal sat(C) and the quotient ideal I:sat(C). Based on this strategy of splitting by means of quotient and with Groebner basis and ideal computations, we devise a simple algorithm to decompose an arbitrary polynomial set F into finitely many strong regular characteristic pairs, from which two representations for the zeros of F are obtained: one in terms of strong regular Groebner bases and the other in terms of regular triangular sets. We present some properties about strong regular characteristic pairs and characteristic decomposition and illustrate the proposed algorithm and its performance by examples and experimental results.

Performance of High-Mobility MIMO Communications with Doppler Diversity

A rapid change of channels in high-speed mobile communications will lead to difficulties in channel estimation and tracking but can also provide Doppler diversity. In this paper, the performance of a multiple-input multiple-output system with pilot-assisted repetition coding and spatial multiplexing is studied. With minimum mean square error (MMSE) channel estimation, an equivalent channel model and the corresponding system model are presented. Based on random matrix theory, asymptotic expressions of the normalized achievable sum rate of the linear receivers, such as the maximal ratio combining (MRC) receiver, MMSE receiver and MRC-like receiver, are derived. In addition, according to the symbol error rate of the MRC-like receiver, the maximum normalized Doppler diversity order and the minimum coding gain loss can be achieved when the repetition number and signal-to-noise ratio tend to infinity, and the corresponding conditions are derived. Based on the theoretical results, the impacts of different system configurations and channel parameters on the system performance are demonstrated.

Joint Sparse Beamforming and Power Control for Large-scale DAS with Network-Assisted Full Duplex

In this paper, we studied the joint sparse beamforming and power control for network-assisted full duplex (NAFD) in large-scale distributed antenna system (L-DAS), where the remote antenna units either be operating in half-duplex mode or full-duplex mode are all connected to the central processing unit (CPU) via high-speed backhaul links. With joint processing at CPU, NAFD could achieve truly flexible duplex, including flexible half-duplex and full-duplex. Cross-link interference and the finite-capacity backhaul are the main problems of NAFD in L-DAS. To solve these problems, we aim to maximize the aggregated rate of uplink and downlink subject to quality of service constraints and backhaul constraints. Two approaches have been proposed to solve the optimization problem, where the first approach converts the object function to the difference of two convex functions with semi-definite relax (SDR) and then an iterative SDR-block coordinate descent method is applied to solve the problem. The second method is based on sequential parametric convex approximation. Simulation results have shown that the proposed algorithms yield a higher rate gain compared to the traditional time-division duplex scheme.

The Second Discriminant of a Univariate Polynomial

We define the second discriminant $D_2$ of a univariate polynomial $f$ of degree greater than $2$ as the product of the linear forms $2\,r_k-r_i-r_j$ for all triples of roots $r_i, r_k, r_j$ of $f$ with $i<j$ and $j\neq k, k\neq i$. $D_2$ vanishes if and only if $f$ has at least one root which is equal to the average of two other roots. We show that $D_2$ can be expressed as the resultant of $f$ and a determinant formed with the derivatives of $f$, establishing a new relation between the roots and the coefficients of $f$. We prove several notable properties and present an application of $D_2$.

ADMM Enabled Hybrid Precoding in Wideband Distributed Phased Arrays Based MIMO Systems

Distributed phased arrays based multiple-input multiple-output (DPA-MIMO) is a recently proposed highly reconfigurable architecture enabling both spatial multiplexing and beamforming in millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems. In this work, we focus on coping with the hybrid precoding for the wideband DPA-MIMO system with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. More specifically, we propose an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) enabled hybrid precoding approach based on an alternating optimization framework, abbreviated to ADMM-AltMin, for such cooperative array-of-subarrays structures. Simulation results show that the proposed ADMM-AltMin method achieves favourable performance with practical quantization of phase shifters taken into account.

Performance of Network-Assisted Full-Duplex for Cell-Free Massive MIMO

Network assisted full-duplex (NAFD) is a spatial-division duplex technique for future wireless networks with cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF massive MIMO) network, where a large number of remote antenna units (RAUs), either using half-duplex or full-duplex, jointly support truly flexible duplex including time-division duplex, frequency-division duplex and full duplex on demand of uplink and downlink traffic by using network MIMO methods. With NAFD, bi-directional data rates of the wireless network could be increased and end-to-end delay could be reduced. In this paper, the spectral efficiency of NAFD communications in CF massive MIMO network with imperfect channel state information (CSI) is investigated under spatial correlated channels. Based on large dimensional random matrix theory, the deterministic equivalents for the uplink sum-rate with minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) receiver as well as the downlink sum-rate with zero-forcing (ZF) and regularized zero-forcing (RZF) beamforming are derived. Numerical results show that under various environmental settings, the deterministic equivalents are accurate in both a large-scale system and system with a finite number of antennas. It is also shown that with the downlink-to-uplink interference cancellation, the uplink spectral efficiency of CF massive MIMO with NAFD could be improved. The spectral efficiencies of NAFD with different duplex configurations such as in-band full-duplex, and half-duplex are compared. With the same total numbers of transmit and receive antennas, NAFD with half-duplex RAUs offers a higher spectral efficiency. To alleviate the uplink-to-downlink interference, a novel genetic algorithm based user scheduling strategy (GAS) is proposed. Simulation results show that the achievable downlink sum-rate by using the GAS is greatly improved compared to that by using the random user scheduling.

Low Complexity Iterative Detection for a Large-scale Distributed MIMO Prototyping System

In this paper, we study the low-complexity iterative soft-input soft-output (SISO) detection algorithm in a large-scale distributed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. The uplink interference suppression matrix is designed to decompose the received multi-user signal into independent single-user receptions. An improved minimum-mean-square-error iterative soft decision interference cancellation (MMSE-ISDIC) based on eigenvalue decomposition (EVD-MMSE-ISDIC) is proposed to perform low-complexity detection of the decomposed signals. Furthermore, two iteration schemes are given to improve receiving performance, which are iterative detection and decoding (IDD) scheme and iterative detection (ID) scheme. While IDD utilizes the external information generated by the decoder for iterative detection, the output information of the detector is directly exploited with ID. In particular, a large-scale distributed MIMO prototyping system is introduced and a 32$ \times $32 (4 user equipments (UEs) and 4 remote antenna units (RAUs), each equipped with 8 antennas) experimental tests at 3.5 GHz was performed. The experimental results show that the proposed iterative receiver greatly outperforms the linear MMSE receiver, since it reduces the average number of error blocks of the system significantly.

Uplink Spectral Efficiency Analysis of Multi-Cell Multi-User Massive MIMO over Correlated Ricean Channel

In this paper, the performance of uplink spectral efficiency in massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) over spacially correlated Ricean fading channel is presented. The maximum ratio combining (MRC) receiver is employed at the base station (BS) for two different methods of channel estimation. The first method is based on pilot-assisted least minimum mean square error (LMMSE) estimation, the second one is based on line-of-sight (LOS) part. The respective analytical expressions of uplink data rate are given for these two methods. Due to the existence of pilot contamination, the uplink data rate of pilot-assisted LMMSE estimation method approaches to a finite value (we name it as asymptotic rate in the paper) when the BS antenna number is very large. However, the data rate of LOS method goes linearly with the number of BS antennas. The expression of the uplink rate of LOS method also show that for Ricean channel, the spacial correlation between the BS antennas may not only decrease the rate, but also increase the rate, which depends on the locations of the users. This conclusion explains why the spacial correlation may increase, rather than decrease the data rate of pilot-assisted LMMSE. We also discuss the power scaling law of the two methods, and the asymptotic expressions of the two methods are the same and both independent of the antenna correlation.

Decomposition of polynomial sets into characteristic pairs

A characteristic pair is a pair (G,C) of polynomial sets in which G is a reduced lexicographic Groebner basis, C is the minimal triangular set contained in G, and C is normal. In this paper, we show that any finite polynomial set P can be decomposed algorithmically into finitely many characteristic pairs with associated zero relations, which provide representations for the zero set of P in terms of those of Groebner bases and those of triangular sets. The algorithm we propose for the decomposition makes use of the inherent connection between Ritt characteristic sets and lexicographic Groebner bases and is based essentially on the structural properties and the computation of lexicographic Groebner bases. Several nice properties about the decomposition and the resulting characteristic pairs, in particular relationships between the Groebner basis and the triangular set in each pair, are established. Examples are given to illustrate the algorithm and some of the properties.

An Overview of Transmission Theory and Techniques of Large-scale Antenna Systems for 5G Wireless Communications

To meet the future demand for huge traffic volume of wireless data service, the research on the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication systems has been undertaken in recent years. It is expected that the spectral and energy efficiencies in 5G mobile communication systems should be ten-fold higher than the ones in the fourth generation (4G) mobile communication systems. Therefore, it is important to further exploit the potential of spatial multiplexing of multiple antennas. In the last twenty years, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna techniques have been considered as the key techniques to increase the capacity of wireless communication systems. When a large-scale antenna array (which is also called massive MIMO) is equipped in a base-station, or a large number of distributed antennas (which is also called large-scale distributed MIMO) are deployed, the spectral and energy efficiencies can be further improved by using spatial domain multiple access. This paper provides an overview of massive MIMO and large-scale distributed MIMO systems, including spectral efficiency analysis, channel state information (CSI) acquisition, wireless transmission technology, and resource allocation.

On the Connection Between Ritt Characteristic Sets and Buchberger-Gröbner Bases

For any polynomial ideal $I$, let the minimal triangular set contained in the reduced Buchberger-Gröbner basis of $I$ with respect to the purely lexicographical term order be called the W-characteristic set of $I$. In this paper, we establish a strong connection between Ritt's characteristic sets and Buchberger's Gröbner bases of polynomial ideals by showing that the W-characteristic set $C$ of $I$ is a Ritt characteristic set of $I$ whenever $C$ is an ascending set, and a Ritt characteristic set of $I$ can always be computed from $C$ with simple pseudo-division when $C$ is regular. We also prove that under certain variable ordering, either the W-characteristic set of $I$ is normal, or irregularity occurs for the $j$th, but not the $(j+1)$th, elimination ideal of $I$ for some $j$. In the latter case, we provide explicit pseudo-divisibility relations, which lead to nontrivial factorizations of certain polynomials in the Buchberger-Gröbner basis and thus reveal the structure of such polynomials. The pseudo-divisibility relations may be used to devise an algorithm to decompose arbitrary polynomial sets into normal triangular sets based on Buchberger-Gröbner bases computation.

The Spaces of Data, Information, and Knowledge

We study the data space $D$ of any given data set $X$ and explain how functions and relations are defined over $D$. From $D$ and for a specific domain $Δ$ we construct the information space $I$ of $X$ by interpreting variables, functions, and explicit relations over $D$ in $Δ$ and by including other relations that $D$ implies under the interpretation in $Δ$. Then from $I$ we build up the knowledge space $K$ of $X$ as the product of two spaces $K_T$ and $K_P$, where $K_T$ is obtained from $I$ by using the induction principle to generalize propositional relations to quantified relations, the deduction principle to generate new relations, and standard mechanisms to validate relations and $K_P$ is the space of specifications of methods with operational instructions which are valid in $K_T$. Through our construction of the three topological spaces the following key observation is made clear: the retrieval of information from the given data set for $Δ$ consists essentially in mining domain objects and relations, and the discovery of knowledge from the retrieved information consists essentially in applying the induction and deduction principles to generate propositions, synthesizing and modeling the information to generate specifications of methods with operational instructions, and validating the propositions and specifications. Based on this observation, efficient approaches may be designed to discover profound knowledge automatically from simple data, as demonstrated by the result of our study in the case of geometry.

Automated Generation of Geometric Theorems from Images of Diagrams

We propose an approach to generate geometric theorems from electronic images of diagrams automatically. The approach makes use of techniques of Hough transform to recognize geometric objects and their labels and of numeric verification to mine basic geometric relations. Candidate propositions are generated from the retrieved information by using six strategies and geometric theorems are obtained from the candidates via algebraic computation. Experiments with a preliminary implementation illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach for generating nontrivial theorems from images of diagrams. This work demonstrates the feasibility of automated discovery of profound geometric knowledge from simple image data and has potential applications in geometric knowledge management and education.

Computing Equilibria of Semi-algebraic Economies Using Triangular Decomposition and Real Solution Classification

In this paper, we are concerned with the problem of determining the existence of multiple equilibria in economic models. We propose a general and complete approach for identifying multiplicities of equilibria in semi-algebraic economies, which may be expressed as semi-algebraic systems. The approach is based on triangular decomposition and real solution classification, two powerful tools of algebraic computation. Its effectiveness is illustrated by two examples of application.
