Isogeometric Analysis for the Pricing of Financial Derivatives with Nonlinear Models: Convertible Bonds and Options

Computational efficiency is essential for enhancing the accuracy and practicality of pricing complex financial derivatives. In this paper, we discuss Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) for valuing financial derivatives, modeled by two nonlinear Black-Scholes PDEs: the Leland model for European call with transaction costs and the AFV model for convertible bonds with default options. We compare the solutions of IGA with finite difference methods (FDM) and finite element methods (FEM). In particular, very accurate solutions can be numerically calculated on far less mesh (knots) than FDM or FEM, by using non-uniform knots and weighted cubic NURBS, which in turn reduces the computational time significantly.

Valuation of the Convertible Bonds under Penalty TF model using Finite Element Method

In this paper, the TF system of two-coupled Black-Scholes equations for pricing the convertible bonds is solved numerically by using the P1 and P2 finite elements with the inequality constraints approximated by the penalty method. The corresponding finite element ODE system is numerically solved by using a modified Crank-Nicolson scheme, in which the non-linear system is solved at each time step by the Newton-Raphson method for non-smooth functions. Moreover, the corresponding Greeks are also calculated by taking advantage of the P1-P2 finite element approximation functions. Numerical solutions by the finite element method compare favorably with the solutions by the finite difference method in literature.

Unsupervised Landmark Detection Based Spatiotemporal Motion Estimation for 4D Dynamic Medical Images

Motion estimation is a fundamental step in dynamic medical image processing for the assessment of target organ anatomy and function. However, existing image-based motion estimation methods, which optimize the motion field by evaluating the local image similarity, are prone to produce implausible estimation, especially in the presence of large motion. In this study, we provide a novel motion estimation framework of Dense-Sparse-Dense (DSD), which comprises two stages. In the first stage, we process the raw dense image to extract sparse landmarks to represent the target organ anatomical topology and discard the redundant information that is unnecessary for motion estimation. For this purpose, we introduce an unsupervised 3D landmark detection network to extract spatially sparse but representative landmarks for the target organ motion estimation. In the second stage, we derive the sparse motion displacement from the extracted sparse landmarks of two images of different time points. Then, we present a motion reconstruction network to construct the motion field by projecting the sparse landmarks displacement back into the dense image domain. Furthermore, we employ the estimated motion field from our two-stage DSD framework as initialization and boost the motion estimation quality in light-weight yet effective iterative optimization. We evaluate our method on two dynamic medical imaging tasks to model cardiac motion and lung respiratory motion, respectively. Our method has produced superior motion estimation accuracy compared to existing comparative methods. Besides, the extensive experimental results demonstrate that our solution can extract well representative anatomical landmarks without any requirement of manual annotation. Our code is publicly available online.

Finite element solutions of the nonlinear RAPM Black-Scholes model

his paper presents finite element methods for solving numerically the Risk-Adjusted Pricing Methodology (RAPM) Black-Scholes model for option pricing with transaction costs. Spatial finite element models based on P1 and/or P2 elements are formulated using some group finite elements and numerical quadrature to handle the nonlinear term, in combination with a Crank-Nicolson-type temporal scheme. The temporal scheme is implemented using the Rannacher approach. Spatial-temporal mesh-size ratios are observed for controlling the stability of our method. Our results compare favorably with the finite difference results in the literature for the model.

In this paper, finite element method is applied to Leland's model for numerical simulation of option pricing with transaction costs. Spatial finite element models based on P1 and/or P2 elements are formulated in combination with a Crank-Nicolson-type temporal scheme. The temporal scheme is implemented using the Rannacher approach. Examples with several sets of parameter values are presented and compared with finite difference results in the literature. Spatial-temporal mesh-size ratios are observed for controlling the stability of our method. Our results compare favorably with the finite difference results in the literature for the model.

An Auto-Context Deformable Registration Network for Infant Brain MRI

Deformable image registration is fundamental to longitudinal and population analysis. Geometric alignment of the infant brain MR images is challenging, owing to rapid changes in image appearance in association with brain development. In this paper, we propose an infant-dedicated deep registration network that uses the auto-context strategy to gradually refine the deformation fields to obtain highly accurate correspondences. Instead of training multiple registration networks, our method estimates the deformation fields by invoking a single network multiple times for iterative deformation refinement. The final deformation field is obtained by the incremental composition of the deformation fields. Experimental results in comparison with state-of-the-art registration methods indicate that our method achieves higher accuracy while at the same time preserves the smoothness of the deformation fields. Our implementation is available online.

Robust Brain Magnetic Resonance Image Segmentation for Hydrocephalus Patients: Hard and Soft Attention

Brain magnetic resonance (MR) segmentation for hydrocephalus patients is considered as a challenging work. Encoding the variation of the brain anatomical structures from different individuals cannot be easily achieved. The task becomes even more difficult especially when the image data from hydrocephalus patients are considered, which often have large deformations and differ significantly from the normal subjects. Here, we propose a novel strategy with hard and soft attention modules to solve the segmentation problems for hydrocephalus MR images. Our main contributions are three-fold: 1) the hard-attention module generates coarse segmentation map using multi-atlas-based method and the VoxelMorph tool, which guides subsequent segmentation process and improves its robustness; 2) the soft-attention module incorporates position attention to capture precise context information, which further improves the segmentation accuracy; 3) we validate our method by segmenting insula, thalamus and many other regions-of-interests (ROIs) that are critical to quantify brain MR images of hydrocephalus patients in real clinical scenario. The proposed method achieves much improved robustness and accuracy when segmenting all 17 consciousness-related ROIs with high variations for different subjects. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to employ deep learning for solving the brain segmentation problems of hydrocephalus patients.

Synthesis and Inpainting-Based MR-CT Registration for Image-Guided Thermal Ablation of Liver Tumors

Thermal ablation is a minimally invasive procedure for treat-ing small or unresectable tumors. Although CT is widely used for guiding ablation procedures, the contrast of tumors against surrounding normal tissues in CT images is often poor, aggravating the difficulty in accurate thermal ablation. In this paper, we propose a fast MR-CT image registration method to overlay a pre-procedural MR (pMR) image onto an intra-procedural CT (iCT) image for guiding the thermal ablation of liver tumors. By first using a Cycle-GAN model with mutual information constraint to generate synthesized CT (sCT) image from the cor-responding pMR, pre-procedural MR-CT image registration is carried out through traditional mono-modality CT-CT image registration. At the intra-procedural stage, a partial-convolution-based network is first used to inpaint the probe and its artifacts in the iCT image. Then, an unsupervised registration network is used to efficiently align the pre-procedural CT (pCT) with the inpainted iCT (inpCT) image. The final transformation from pMR to iCT is obtained by combining the two estimated transformations,i.e., (1) from the pMR image space to the pCT image space (through sCT) and (2) from the pCT image space to the iCT image space (through inpCT). Experimental results confirm that the proposed method achieves high registration accuracy with a very fast computational speed.

Deep Morphological Simplification Network (MS-Net) for Guided Registration of Brain Magnetic Resonance Images

Objective: Deformable brain MR image registration is challenging due to large inter-subject anatomical variation. For example, the highly complex cortical folding pattern makes it hard to accurately align corresponding cortical structures of individual images. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning way to simplify the difficult registration problem of brain MR images. Methods: We train a morphological simplification network (MS-Net), which can generate a "simple" image with less anatomical details based on the "complex" input. With MS-Net, the complexity of the fixed image or the moving image under registration can be reduced gradually, thus building an individual (simplification) trajectory represented by MS-Net outputs. Since the generated images at the ends of the two trajectories (of the fixed and moving images) are so simple and very similar in appearance, they are easy to register. Thus, the two trajectories can act as a bridge to link the fixed and the moving images, and guide their registration. Results: Our experiments show that the proposed method can achieve highly accurate registration performance on different datasets (i.e., NIREP, LPBA, IBSR, CUMC, and MGH). Moreover, the method can be also easily transferred across diverse image datasets and obtain superior accuracy on surface alignment. Conclusion and Significance: We propose MS-Net as a powerful and flexible tool to simplify brain MR images and their registration. To our knowledge, this is the first work to simplify brain MR image registration by deep learning, instead of estimating deformation field directly.

On geometric estimates for some problems arising from modeling pull-in voltage in MEMS

In this paper for all $p>1$ we prove that the pull-in voltage of the $p$-MEMS (micro-electro mechanical systems) problems on a smooth bounded domain of $\mathbb R^{d}, d\geq1,$ is minimized by symmetrizing the domain and the permittivity profile. The proofs rely on some suitable version of Talenti's comparison principle. We also demonstrate our method to the multidimensional MEMS type problems on the whole space $\mathbb R^{d}, d\geq3,$ and the Dirichlet boundary value problems of second order uniformly elliptic differential operators.

Optimal Design of Helical Springs of Power Law Materials

In this paper the geometric dimensions of a compressive helical spring made of power law materials are optimized to reduce the amount of material. The mechanical constraints are derived to form the geometric programming problem. Both the prime and the dual problem are examined and solved semi-analytically for a range of spring index. A numerical example is provided to validate the solutions.

On the solvability of the Brinkman-Forchheimer-extended Darcy equation

The nonlinear Brinkman-Forchheimer-extended Darcy equation is used to model some porous medium flow in chemical reactors of packed bed type. The results concerning the existence and uniqueness of a weak solution are presented for nonlinear convective flows in medium with nonconstant porosity and for small data. Furthermore, the finite element approximations to the flow profiles in the fixed bed reactor are presented for several Reynolds numbers at the non-Darcy's range.

On the Solvability of an Euler Graphene Beam Subject to Axial Compressive Load

In this paper we formulate the equilibrium equation of a beam made of graphene material subjected to some boundary conditions and acted upon by axial compression and nonlinear lateral constrains as a fourth-order nonlinear boundary value problem. We also formulate the nonlinear eigenvalue for buckling analysis of the beam. We verify the solvability of the buckling problem as an asymptotic expansion in a ratio of the elastoplastic parameters, that the spectrum is bounded away from zero and contains a discrete infinite sequence of eigenvalues. We also verify, for certain ranges of the lateral forces, the solvability of the general equations using energy methods and a suitable iteration scheme.

Critical Buckling Loads of the Perfect Hollomon's Power-law Columns

In this work, we present analytic formulas for calculating the critical buckling states of some plastic axial columns of constant cross-sections. The associated critical buckling loads are calculated by Euler-type analytic formulas and the associated deformed shapes are presented in terms of generalized trigonometric functions. The plasticity of the material is defined by the Hollomon's power-law equation. This is an extension of the Euler critical buckling loads of perfect elastic columns to perfect plastic columns. In particular, critical loads for perfect straight plastic columns with circular and rectangular cross-sections are calculated for a list of commonly used metals. Connections and comparisons to the classical result of the Euler-Engesser reduced-modulus loads are also presented.

A variational representation of weak solutions for the pressureless Euler-Poisson equations

We derive an explicit formula for global weak solutions of the one dimensional system of pressure-less Euler-Poisson equations. Our variational formulation is an extension of the well-known formula for entropy solutions of the scalar inviscid Burgers' equation: since the characteristics of the Euler-Poisson equations are parabolas, the representation of their weak solution takes the form of a "quadratic" version of the celebrated Lax-Oleinik variational formula. Three cases are considered. (i) The variational formula recovers the "sticky particle" solution in the attractive case; (ii) It represents a repulsive solution which is different than the one obtained by the sticky particle construction; and (iii) the result is further extended to the multi-dimensional Euler-Poisson system with radial symmetry.

Global Regularity of the 4D Restricted Euler Equations

We are concerned with the critical threshold phenomena in the Restricted Euler (RE) equations. Using the spectral and trace dynamics we identify the critical thresholds for 3D and the 4D restricted Euler equations. It is well known that the 3D RE solutions blow up. Projected on the 3-sphere, the set of initial eigenvalues which give rise to bounded stable solutions is reduced to a single point, which confirms that 3D RE blowup is generic. In contrast, we identify a surprisingly rich set of the initial spectrum on the 4-sphere which yields global smooth solutions; thus, 4D regularity is generic.

On the global regularity of sub-critical Euler-Poisson equations with pressure

We prove that the one-dimensional Euler-Poisson system driven by the Poisson forcing together with the usual γ-law pressure, γ ≥ 1, admits global solutions for a large class of initial data. Thus, the Poisson forcing regularizes the generic finite-time breakdown in the 2x2 p-system. Global regularity is shown to depend on whether or not the initial configuration of the Riemann invariants and density crosses an intrinsic critical threshold.
