Efficient Adjoint Matching for Fine-tuning Diffusion Models

Reward fine-tuning has become a common approach for aligning pretrained diffusion and flow models with human preferences in text-to-image generation. Among reward-gradient-based methods, Adjoint Matching (AM) provides a principled formulation by casting reward fine-tuning as a stochastic optimal control (SOC) problem. However, AM inevitably requires a substantial computational cost: it requires (i) stochastic simulation of full generative trajectories under memoryless dynamics, resulting in a large number of function evaluations, and (ii) backward ODE simulation of the adjoint state along each sampled trajectory. In this work, we observe that both bottlenecks are closely tied to the \textit{non-trivial base drift} inherited from the pretrained model. Motivated by this observation, we propose \textbf{Efficient Adjoint Matching (EAM)}, which substantially improves training efficiency by reformulating the SOC problem with a \textit{linear base drift} and a correspondingly modified \textit{terminal cost}. This reformulation removes both sources of inefficiency; it enables training-time sampling with a few-step deterministic ODE solver and yields a closed-form adjoint solution that eliminates backward adjoint simulation. On standard text-to-image reward fine-tuning benchmarks, EAM converges up to 4x faster than AM and matches or surpasses it across various metrics including PickScore, ImageReward, HPSv2.1, CLIPScore and Aesthetics.

Towards Scalable Human-aligned Benchmark for Text-guided Image Editing

A variety of text-guided image editing models have been proposed recently. However, there is no widely-accepted standard evaluation method mainly due to the subjective nature of the task, letting researchers rely on manual user study. To address this, we introduce a novel Human-Aligned benchmark for Text-guided Image Editing (HATIE). Providing a large-scale benchmark set covering a wide range of editing tasks, it allows reliable evaluation, not limited to specific easy-to-evaluate cases. Also, HATIE provides a fully-automated and omnidirectional evaluation pipeline. Particularly, we combine multiple scores measuring various aspects of editing so as to align with human perception. We empirically verify that the evaluation of HATIE is indeed human-aligned in various aspects, and provide benchmark results on several state-of-the-art models to provide deeper insights on their performance.

Deformations of sandwiched surface singularities and the minimal model program

We investigate the correspondence between three theories of deformations of rational surface singularities: de Jong and van Straten's picture deformations, Kollár's P-resolutions, and Pinkham's smoothings of negative weights. We provide an explicit method for obtaining, from a given deformation in one theory, deformations in other theories that parameterize the same irreducible components of the deformation space of the singularity. We employ the semi-stable minimal model program significantly for this purpose. We prove Kollár conjecture for various sandwiched surface singularities as an application.

Symplectic rational blow-ups on rational 4-manifolds

We prove that if a symplectic 4-manifold $X$ becomes a rational 4-manifold after applying rational blow-down surgery, then the symplectic 4-manifold $X$ is originally rational. That is, a symplectic rational blow-up of a rational symplectic $4$-manifold is again rational. As an application we show that a degeneration of a family of smooth rational complex surfaces is a rational surface if the degeneration has at most quotient surface singularities, which generalizes slightly a classical result of [Bădescu, 1986] in algebraic geometry under a mild additional condition.

Symplectic fillings of quotient surface singularities and minimal model program

We prove that every minimal symplectic filling of the link of a quotient surface singularity can be obtained from its minimal resolution by applying a sequence of rational blow-downs and symplectic antiflips. We present an explicit algorithm inspired by the minimal model program for complex 3-dimensional algebraic varieties.

Simple embeddings of rational homology balls and antiflips

Let $V$ be a regular neighborhood of a negative chain of $2$-spheres (i.e. exceptional divisor of a cyclic quotient singularity), and let $B_{p,q}$ be a rational homology ball which is smoothly embedded in $V$. Assume that the embedding is simple, i.e. the corresponding rational blow-up can be obtained by just a sequence of ordinary blow-ups from $V$. Then we show that this simple embedding comes from the semi-stable minimal model program (MMP) for $3$-dimensional complex algebraic varieties under certain mild conditions. That is, one can find all simply embedded $B_{p,q}$'s in $V$ via a finite sequence of antiflips applied to a trivial family over a disk. As applications, simple embeddings are impossible for chains of $2$-spheres with self-intersections equal to $-2$. We also show that there are (infinitely many) pairs of disjoint $B_{p,q}$'s smoothly embedded in regular neighborhoods of (almost all) negative chains of $2$-spheres. Along the way, we describe how MMP gives (infinitely many) pairs of disjoint rational homology balls $B_{p,q}$ embedded in blown-up rational homology balls $B_{n,a} # \bar{\mathbb{CP}^2}$ (via certain divisorial contractions), and in the Milnor fibers of certain cyclic quotient surface singularities. This generalizes results in [Khodorovskiy-2014], [H. Park-J. Park-D. Shin-2016], [Owens-2017] by means of a uniform point of view.

Rational homology balls in $2$-handlebodies

We prove that there are rational homology balls $B_p$ smoothly embedded in the $2$-handlebodies associated to certain knots. Furthermore we show that, if we rationally blow up the $2$-handlebody along the embedded rational homology ball $B_p$, then the resulting $4$-manifold cannot be obtained just by a sequence of ordinary blow ups from the $2$-handlebody under a certain mild condition.

Invariants of deformations of quotient surface singularities

We find all $P$-resolutions of quotient surface singularities (especially, tetrahedral, octahedral, and icosahedral singularities) together with their dual graphs, which reproduces Jan Steven's list [Manuscripta Math. 1993] of the numbers of $P$-resolutions of each singularities. We then compute the dimensions and Milnor numbers of the corresponding irreducible components of the reduced base spaces of versal deformations of each singularities. Furthermore we realize Milnor fibers as complements of certain divisors (depending only on the singularities) in rational surfaces via the minimal model program for 3-folds. Then we compare Milnor fibers with minimal symplectic fillings, where the latter are classified by Bhupal and Ono [Nagoya Math. J. 2012]. As an application, we show that there are 6 pairs of entries in the list of Bhupal and Ono [Nagoya Math. J. 2012] such that two entries in each pairs represent diffeomorphic minimal symplectic fillings.

Milnor fibers and symplectic fillings of quotient surface singularities

We determine a one-to-one correspondence between Milnor fibers and minimal symplectic fillings of a quotient surface singularity (up to diffeomorphism type) by giving an explicit algorithm to compare them mainly via techniques from the minimal model program for 3-folds and Pinkham's negative weight smoothing. As by-products, we show that: -- Milnor fibers associated to irreducible components of the reduced versal deformation space of a quotient surface singularity are not diffeomorphic to each other with a few obvious exceptions. For this, we classify minimal symplectic fillings of a quotient surface singularity up to diffeomorphism. -- Any symplectic filling of a quotient surface singularity is obtained by a sequence of rational blow-downs from a special resolution (so-called the maximal resolution) of the singularity, which is an analogue of the one-to-one correspondence between the irreducible components of the reduced versal deformation space and the so-called $P$-resolutions of a quotient surface singularity.

Smoothly embedded rational homology balls

In this paper we prove the existence of rational homology balls smoothly embedded in regular neighborhoods of certain linear chains of smooth $2$-spheres by using techniques from minimal model program for 3-dimensional complex algebraic variety.

Normal complex surface singularities with rational homology disk smoothings

In this paper we show that if the minimal good resolution graph of a normal surface singularity contains at least two nodes (i.e. vertex with valency at least 3) then the singularity does not admit a smoothing with Milnor fiber having rational homology equal to the rational homology of the 4-disk $D^4$ (called a rational homology disk smoothing). Combining with earlier results, this theorem then provides a complete classification of resolution graphs of normal surface singularities with a rational homology disk smoothing, verifying a conjecture of J. Wahl regarding such singularities. Indeed, together with a recent result of J. Fowler we get the complete list of normal surface singularities which admit rational homology disk smoothings.

A simply connected numerical Campedelli surface with an involution

We construct a simply connected minimal complex surface of general type with $p_g=0$ and $K^2=2$ which has an involution such that the minimal resolution of the quotient by the involution is a simply connected minimal complex surface of general type with $p_g=0$ and $K^2=1$. In order to construct the example, we combine a double covering and $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein deformation. Especially, we develop a method for proving unobstructedness for deformations of a singular surface by generalizing a result of Burns and Wahl which characterizes the space of first order deformations of a singular surface with only rational double points. We describe the stable model in the sense of Kollár and Shepherd-Barron of the singular surfaces used for constructing the example. We count the dimension of the invariant part of the deformation space of the example under the induced $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-action.

A complex surface of general type with $p_g=0$, $K^2=2$ and $H_1=\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z}$

We construct a new minimal complex surface of general type with $p_g=0$, $K^2=2$ and $H_1=\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z}$ (in fact $π_1^{\text{alg}}=\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z}$), which settles the existence question for numerical Campedelli surfaces with all possible algebraic fundamental groups. The main techniques involved in the construction are a rational blow-down surgery and a $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein smoothing theory.

Surfaces of general type with $p_g=1$ and $q=0$

In this paper we construct a new family of simply connected minimal complex surfaces of general type with $p_g=1$, $q=0$, and $K^2=3, 4, 5, 6, 8$ using a $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein smoothing theory. We also reconstruct minimal complex surfaces of general type with $p_g=1$, $q=0$, and $K^2=1, 2$ using the same method.

Infinitesimal deformations of complements of plumbings of rational curves

We construct infinitesimal deformations on an open domain of a smooth projective surface given by a complement of plumbings of disjoint linear chains of smooth rational curves. We show that the infinitesimal deformations are not small deformations, that is, they change the complex structure away from the boundary of the domain.

The minimal degree of plane models of double covers of smooth curves

If $X$ is a smooth curve such that the minimal degree of its plane models is not too small compared with its genus, then $X$ has been known to be a double cover of another smooth curve $Y$ under some mild condition on the genera. However there are no results yet for the minimal degrees of plane models of double covers except some special cases. In this paper, we give upper and lower bounds for the minimal degree of plane models of the double cover $X$ in terms of the gonality of the base curve $Y$ and the genera of $X$ and $Y$. In particular, the upper bound equals to the lower bound in case $Y$ is hyperelliptic. We give an example of a double cover which has plane models of degree equal to the lower bound.
